Now that ME's crapped out, what the greatest sci-fi video game saga?

I actually thought "The Answer" wasn't really a necessity to be honest. The ending to the original, IMHO, was fine as it is.
Not a necessity, but considering how close your crew was at the end of that game, I felt that a character-driven post-game arc in which all the party deals with what happened at the end was a real treat.

Why?
They're consistent with themselves.
Halo: One man badass takes on unstoppable enemy. Wins. Stays badass without cow-towing to
a glowing StarChild.
Fallout: Survive a desolate wasteland 220 odd years in the future while tackling some interesting moral choices along the way.
DX:HR: Shows the conflict between pure organic and augmented(synthetic) conflict WAAAAY better than what BioWare tried to stuff into ME3's end.
Don't get me wrong. Still enjoyed the series, but the end is a lot like the Titanic. Lot's of hype, had a lot of fun, then nose dived at the end.
The journey doesn't mean much if you freeze in the Atlantic eh?

ummm, pretty sure Fallout is just fiction though there are aliens in it sooo...? hm. Also Whoever said Advent Rising just brought back a rush of really good memories, so yeah, thanks for that.
Fallout is definitly science fiction

Hits every checkpoint, and before you ask about the space travel, it happens a few times throughout the series, and there's some teleportation in there.

I bet Rockstar will fill the void at some point.
shut up and take my money.
Been re-playing RDR lately and man if Rockstar made a sci-fi type game I'd be all over it.

Since others have already thrown out Kotor and stuff like that, people need to play Vanquish. Story is laughable but it's about the gameplay and the setting for that game. Launch trailer for it.
Dead Space. Deus Ex.
Lots of good scifi out there. Hell, Xenosaga wasn't that bad either. I know we're talking BEST, but oh well

Zone of the Enders is pretty fantastic for not having as much background as ME and Halo. The 2nd Runner is one of the best games ever made.

So in short, it's a user-created sci-fi epic that never ends in a choice of three colors.
And thanks to the endings, Halo may have to be this generation's defining sci-fi story. =/
But in all honesty, the multiple-universe things that happen in the Phantasy Star series rank that up really high IMO.

I play EVE-O. It's a universe that, while it has some developer-made story arcs, the largest portion of the game's events are all player-controlled and dealt with on the end-user side.

Fix'd because as someone who spent 3 years playing that game I can tell you that there is no hope for humanity

Yes!
Kind of glitchy on Windows 7, from what I've heard. (Then again, so is Mass Effect 1 <_<. I'm totally serious, though I seem to be the only member of LDG who can't get ME1 to install on Win7x64. Amazing, considering it's outright called incompatible on Microsoft's compatibility page. Still, going from 15fps to 62fps on ME2 was well worth it anyway. And I can even play Saints Row 2 on MEDIUM.
KotOR is still essential viewing, though, just like Baldur's Gate and NWN are supposed to be that for Dragon Age fans.

My vote would be for Halo. It's got the big, epic, galaxy-spanning storyline and a rich fiction that is constantly and carefully expanded and built upon. Dead Space looks promising, although it's still somewhat new and meddling by EA executives might derail it in the same way that ME was derailed.
People really seem to like Starcraft and Eve Online as well, but I've never played either of them so I don't know how they stack up.
Halo? Seriously? Since this topic should really have something to do with ME, I'll start by saying that Halo has not matched the thought provoking interactive game play of even ME1 and I was a Halo junkie for a while. Matter of fact, Halo can't even stand up against Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast.
Yes the ending was dull and far from stellar but the story alone was what makes the game what it is.Dead Space 1 and 2 were great games but the genres are completely different. Dead Space wasn't epic story telling, it was all about survival in that sci-fi setting. Right now, the last sci-fi game that I'm waiting for, if done right would blow Halo out the water. Aliens: Colonial Marines and notice how said "if done right."
The only thing I can somewhat agree with you is what I placed in bold from your post. I feel that if this continues then we are on track for another "crash" of 1983. It's time, for all these deadlines and pressure to end. How can a company be truly creative if they are forced to work under these constraints? It's still no excuse for the ending but still.
Halo actually has a fantastic universe and the novels are pretty good. JK II: Jedi Outcast beating Halo... I've played both games, and I wouldn't kinda agree wtih that.
Halo was excellent for the fact that it had a sacrifical ending without an obvious McGruffin or Deus Ex Machina riding in to save the day. They kept it practical: light it up and watch it burn. The Flood were an ancient civilization destroying and previously thought unstopabble enemy, but then we defeated them. Victory, hurrah!
Plus, they kept their universe intact! Pretty fantastic huh?

Didn't someone knock out the power in an entire neighborhood so they could destroy their titan or something? I hear that games brutal. I've also heard it called Hardcore economics: the game.

Best to grab KOTOR off Steam, like I did. For KOTOR 2, I would recommend picking that up on PC as well so that you can grab the Reconstruction Mods that add back in the cut content.

Worlds I have fallen in love with equally but for different reasons that all fall under a science fiction label include(but are not limited to): Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Mass Effect, Eureka/Warehouse 13, Dead Space, Half Life, Fallout, Halo and Bioshock. On top of those I'm looking at watching Battlestar.
Just because there are those of you who feel the need to have one story to scratch each itch doesn't mean anyone else needs to follow your train of thought on that matter. I like good, interesting worlds, regardless of technical genre. Because of that I'm more than willing to take a pause for Bioware to give their best shot to attempt a repair of the ending(something I am more than able to accept can be done). I guess I'm the exception though. Have fun all.
