modding a DooM 1 engine reimplementation; then preparing my 75ton ON1-K Orion battlemech for Mechwarrior:Online.
Ah Battletech, may not be the best sci-fi continuity, but generally one of the most dependable ones, no star children to be found, no attempts at left-field profound philosophy - just large clanking robots and the humans that pilot them :D

Crapped out? No. Mass Effect is still the best videogame sci-fi saga of this generation, hands down.

Halo = Trash

Whatever you feel about the gameplay, the backstory is one of the best I've ever seen.

How can someone say Halo is trash? Trolling is how.

Marathon is pretty damn good too.

It's been hinted Marathon and halo take place in the same multiverse

My vote would be for Halo. It's got the big, epic, galaxy-spanning storyline and a rich fiction that is constantly and carefully expanded and built upon. Dead Space looks promising, although it's still somewhat new and meddling by EA executives might derail it in the same way that ME was derailed.

People really seem to like Starcraft and Eve Online as well, but I've never played either of them so I don't know how they stack up.

I totally agree. Halo 1 had the best story out there. It was mysterious, captivating, and well written. I can only imagen what a halo like story and ME game would be like.

EvE online is only good if u reeealy like sci-fi and alot of statistics...the ships are great and pvp is epic to the core but evrything else is pretty much slow and boring sometimes.

starcraft is strategy game, its awesome but pvp is unhealthy imo...if u heat up fast it wont be worth it for you but the story and quality not to mention the gameplay are down right masterpiece.

NOTE: i think im the only wierdo who plays EvE in the community...

There´s no sci-fi game even remotely in ME´s ballpark. It even topped Star Wars for me before I saw the ending.

HALO's not even close to the top.

Overall story.... Assassin's Creed right now.

Ending? Bioshock. That was an AWESOME ending.

Fallout: New Vegas weighs down on Fallout.

Gameplay? STARCRAFT!!!!!... Unless X COM lives up to my expectations of its awesomeness.

KOTOR is still pretty darn good. II, not so much, but I is still awesome.

All that said.... ME is still vast and deep. Whatever comes next will still .... Just because the ending is a huge blemish doesn't completely negate everything else.

Mass Effect, because the only thing that matters to me in a game are the characters. And I generally dislike sci-fi, ME just captured my attention (yes, through the characters).
It's unfortunate that so many people think it's now the worst series in existence.

Before the skittles explosions, I would've said ME blows every other sci-fi series away...but after, yeah, I have to give the nod to Halo, though I'm gonna disagree with other people in that Reach and ODST are my favorites (in that order). I also recall Homeworld being really great, but it's been years since I played it to remember the details...I really wish Relic would make a Homeworld 3.

Fallout is awesome, but though it technically is sci-fi, it's almost a different genre altogether from the space opera that ME is.

Knights of the old republic is by far my favorite. Not only does it exist in the already awesome Star wars universe, but due to the Kotor games (by far my personal choice as bioware's greatest game, sith lords was alright from osbidian) they delved into the greatest part of star wars universe history. Mandalorian wars, revan's fall, revan's redemption due to bastilla, revan seeking out the sith empire to destroy it, the exile, it's just so awesome

Oh, it's not the worst in existence, far from it. It's just that the ending destroyed it so thoroughly that it went from "best ever" to "middling at best because I can't think of it without thinking of friggin' space magic and starkid".

OP, you offend me with the word "cr*pped". ME3 was made. Having said that, Mass Effect is hands down the best video game sci-fi saga. It blows Halo out of the water as well as others like Fallout and Bioshock. Notable mentions include Sins of a Solar Empire and Dawn of War.

Even with the crappy ending, ME still is hands down the best Scifi universe out there IMO.
And I am not talking in terms of video games, I am talking in terms of entertainment in general.

Mass Effect is still tops for me. But then, I actually liked the ending, so . . . no surprise there.

A close second is Freespace (which combined with the Freespace Open Project is about the best $5 you can spend on GOG). Other than Bioware RPGs, this is probably the single game I've clocked the most time in, and have played continuously since it was released.

KOTOR is also amazing, and Deus Ex (both the first game and HR), even with their flaws are really quite good.

And the Space Quest series has some great gems in it.

Halo back history is great and pretty complex and awesome

The Forerunners spamed the milky way and where the FIRST race to rise to the heavens and make their empire, they followed the code of the mantle that was pretty much the Prime directive (do not interfere with developing species, and protect them from those that wanted to interfere).

Then the Flood came from deep space (hinted from another galaxy) and waged war with the forerunners for thousand of years, forcing the forerunners to use the derpy mass effect ending to clean the galaxy of all life capable of sustaining the flood.

Mass Effect was all about the galactic community and the characters.
Halo is about the war that ensued when a bunch of races misinterpreted the the relics of the past and attempt genocide on another one.

Mass Effect is better than Halo because only hardcore fans of halo go deeper than the pew pew pew game while mass effect gives most of the information related to the universe in the game itself.

oh and fyi:

Halo novels >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mass Effect Novels
Mass Effect in game universe >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Halo in game universe
Halo WHOLE universe >/= Mass Effect Universe
Mass Effect Characters and species >>>>>> Halo Characters and species

To me Halo is first place again, but Garrus/Tali/Legion will always stay deep in my heart in places MC couldn't hope to reach

Damn. But really though, new vegas being the worst in the series? lolwut? what about fallout brotherhood of steel? or tactics? those were awful.

Edit: I thought the FO3 plot was complete garbage. Game was fun, but the story was just...awful....

I think I'm done with scifi at this point, I've lost hope in anyone's ability to do it right.
