Well, I for one am really happy with Mr Laidlaw and the rest of the teams direction for follower armour customisation - so naturally that's all I want to talk about 24 hours a day...

It got me thinking about the plans for how player armour would be handled and I had a thought and would love to hear what all of you think.

Ok, let's say I play a mage. Now imagine there are 5 or 6 (10 or 20+???) 'base' armours. These could be stat-less or have the same stats, but all look very different. One could be a flowing traditional wizard robe perhaps, or one could be more rugged like the Hawke champion robes. The point is, I can choose, and switch between at any point in the game, these different 'base' robes.

Now, I find some boots out on my adventures, and just like the follower armour customisation demonstrated to us at PAX, these boots will integrate into my player characters chosen 'base' robes. For a change of pace, I decide to change the base robes but leave the boots, and voila, the boots change their look with the base.

This could even go one step further, and allow us to change the colour, texture, or material of the base robes to our liking (this was hinted at as being a possibility during the panel video).

Personally I am giddy thinking about all the possibilities this kind of system could create for my player character. It really sounds like it would be a lot of fun. What do you guys think? Do you think this could happen, or do you think the intention will be to have one set of 'base' iconic robes for the player character too, that armour could customise?

I like your idea.
One thing that bothers me in Dragon Age 2 is that, until you get the champion armor in act 3 (or spend money on DLC or item packs), the player armor looks pretty crappy in comparison to those of the companions.
Though I imagine with the time and effort needed to create different versions of player armor there probably won´t be more than 3 or 4 base sets.
Armor parts also would have to be more rare, which I am perfectly fine with - I prefer it when armor is scarce and hard to get by instead of lying around everywhere - but many would see it as being too restricted I guess.
But I think it´s a good compromise that really allows the player to customize their looks, something that hasn´t been possible till now even if you find 50 different mage robes lying around.

I just keep my Hawke in some cool sleeveless green costume he started in once he got off the ship in Act 1, mainly because I never seem to have high enough stats to unlock all the best bloody costumes... which is weird since all his skills a pretty high by the end of Act 2.

All good points. I think you are right about the 3 or 4 base sets. I would like to see 3 or 4 per class though if this idea works. You are also right that it is dependent on armour parts being more rare. I think I am ok with this. Loot is a very fun mechanic in RPGs however I much prefer it to be meaningful. The fact for me is finding that one amazing piece of armour with its own lore, history, and appearance is so much more satisfying than finding piles and piles of the same stuff in every chest.

I'd like to have a set of casual clothes for our companions so that they're not all running around in armor between quests or when they're off duty, especially possible warrior companions like Templars/Grey Wardens/Guards etc.

I know Bioware want his characters to follow a static way in how they dress up, thats fine, but I don't want my character ( the hero) to wear an armor and it looks like he is a seeker/templar/whatever, now having a templar/seeker and warden dressing up and showing what organization they work for is totally FINE they are part of an organization so it follows they shouldn't lose what they are.

For my hero on the Other hand I choose how to dress them UP thank you very much:
