Dragon Age Sales?

I think FPS have a broader audience in general for one thing. Also the rating cuts off teenagers and parents placing DA:O under the x-mas tree.
Hopefully the sales meet/exceed the expectations and the DLC keeps the game alive longer. It'll look also good, when the game won't be available at reduced prices too soon. The DLC is an interesting concept, which has good chances for the Devs and Publisher to generate more income out of a game besides the sales. I hope they don't blow this chance of introducing a new concept by subpar DLCs. One day in the future more games may hit the shelves at lower prices, but with some kind of subscription or DLC basis.

Atm it looks like DA will see sales in the region of ME1 -maybe slightly less. That *is* somewhat disappointing (considering the expensive marketing campaign and the fact that it launched on both consoles) but at least it's safe to assume that DA didn't bomb.
I just hope DA will not go down the JE route (whose sequel apparently has been canned a couple of months ago, after been worked on for quite some time). That'd be kinda sad. I really want a sequel to this game.

They offer more gameplay of a variety that a lot of people don't find entertaining. There's no reflection of intellect in what types of gameplay people tend to enjoy, really. People play video games for very different reasons. There is no amount of awesome storytelling that would make someone who demands direct control of a combat situation enjoy a game like this. Those same people that you think enjoy "just shooting stuff" would probably look at this game and ask why you enjoy "just clicking stuff" because there's no direct control over the combat and wouldn't give it a second glance. In essence it's exactly the same kind of dismission you give FPS games, for different reasons - both views of which are entirely valid because the purpose of a video game is limited.
I have to disagree. That would be reducing an RPG to combat, which (in a real RPG) is only one part. An important part, but only one part. Whereas in an FPS combat is all there is to the game. To be honest, I think a lot of the success of shallow games is due to marketing and hype. Make of that what you will regarding the people who fall for it. But that's why sales numbers are so important for us too: To make BioWare and especially EA see that quality and depth still sell too. I hope many more people will buy DA for christmas yet.

The game is not "buggy" at all. I have rarely, if ever, played a less buggy game directly on release. Some people have problems. Some people will always have problems. The game has worked very well for me. Only two minor issues. I have to access the clipboard with a different program after taking the first screenshot. If I don't, the screenshots will only be sent to the clipboard and never to the folder. And it's prudent to exit the game after about 5-7 hours of play, and restart it. If I don't, the game may crash later. That's all. Vista64, 8GB, AMD+AMD.BrunoB1971 wrote...

From the sales I've seen of DA: O so far they are very good for a RPG, especially an old-school one that is not labeled as 'action'. ~1m so far on consoles and on PC probably ~500k with DD sales. And clearly, besides a few well-known franchises, I don't know many RPGs that manage to sell over 1m in one month.
Consoles are big in Europe as well, see the Wii popularity and other actual hardware and software sales. They are even with N.A. hardware-wise and surpass them sometimes. The thing is the PC market has shifted towards other models and new genres. Retail sales are constantly dropping every year, but we don't know the digital sales of games which are increasing and the MMO market is huge, virtually non-existent on consoles.
Now the handheld/cellphone gaming market is quickly expanding and already outselling in harware (see Nintendo DS and Iphone sale). I bet in some years it will be the biggest market.

Don't even try and compete with licensed property games that are even halfway decent (Batman) or the music games (DJ Hero) as they appeal to people who would never buy a CRPG.

DAO fares a lot better than other instant classic games. Its not really all bad.

The amount of DLC this game can push is going determin Dragon Age 2 and 3. If kickass DLC comes out in a steady flow (and I think it will) sales will spike each time a new pack comes out, and money flows in from people who already own it buys the game.
And the more DLC that is sold, the less copies of Dragon Age is traded back. (why trade back a copy of a game were 40$ of content is on your gamerprofile, and why will gamestop pay you good cash for a game that is missing all that content)

Who told him it was buggy? Considering what some publishers offered to gamers as 1.00 gold version this game is very polished and probably excels other publisher's 1.50 version. There are some very minor bugs, like in some cases not entirely correct codex entries, but these don't break the game.
Quite a few issues I had recently came from using alpha or beta community mods or messing mindlessly with the toolset, which can cause the AI go nuts or cause model/texture issues. This can easily fixed. Solutions are in the forums. I played the entire game and had not even once any problem being stuck because of any kind of bug. I also had no problem with DLCs. Tell your friend to get this game... and to take a week vacation.

PC gaming is on the decline, PC games will never outsell their console counterparts even if they are better on the PC, Dragon Age is no exception.
people spout this nonsense without any proof , when the facts are that PC gaming is on the increase year on year . Silly to say PC gaming is declining when 10 million people play WOW and the tops games all sell milllions . I'd assume dragon age would sell far more than baldurs gate.

Solica, thanks for pointing this out. I agree 100%. DA:O plays flawlessly on my rig. Some other games I've played have been horrible nightmares upon release compared to DA:O, which sparkles in comparison.

Normal difficulty is a good challenge but not overwhelming and a good place to learn the game. Rerolling on hard and it's requiring more concentration but the things I have learned so far still blazing through.
My first full playthrough took 77 hours, that's pretty badass these days
I bet a sequel would sell sheet-tunz!!
I have high hopes for the star wars thingy they are doing later!

*ahem*
This is what I posted in another thread - it's mostly about the first week, and it's limited in details, but it gives you some sense of sales:

http://www.industryg...n-in-dlc-sales/
http://www.shacknews...article.x/61219
http://www.gamefocus...av=new&nid=7493
http://www.vg247.com...am-sales-chart/
Interesting - thanks!
Anyway, I delved deeper into www.shacknews.com and they have sales charts for the subsequent week too. On D2D Dragon Age and its deluxe editions get the two top spots, while on Steam they get spots 2 and 3, the top spot going to Modern Warfare 2.
Dragon Age seems to have sold around 450,000 copies during the first week on the XBOX 360 and PS 3 according to this article: http://news.vgchartz...ews.php?id=5846
According to this chart, by 21st of November, Dragon Age has sold just over 408,000 copies on XBOX 360 and just over 200,000 copies on PS 3 in the U.S. alone: http://www.vgchartz.com/aweekly.php
These charts shows just over 124,000 XBOX 360 and about 23,000 PS 3 sales by 21 November 2009 in Europe and other regions (other than the U.S. that is): http://vgchartz.com/eweekly.php and http://www.vgchartz....s=50&sort=Total (the last chart shows all the console sales up to 21 November 2009, but with less accuracy)
It is actually surprising for me to see just how many more sales are in the U.S. than in the rest of the world combined according to those figures.
I would guess that most sales of dragon age took place on the PC, but figures for that seem to be hard to come by.
To have a game that is actually original and not another god forsaken sequel is actually quite refreshing..friggin l4d2icouldhavebeenadlc/cod29billion/blah blah: total war/WoW:Yet another 50$ gone this year+the pay to play service...
Once more its a SINGLE PLAYER game and doing well in this multiplayer driven industry..

Huh, almost a million console sales already. Probably a million now?
If that gets me more great Bioware games, I guess I apologize, Bioware, for really being upset that you decided to delay the game for a port.

As if that isn't enough, I am planning on getting a 3rd copy - one for PC, hoping that there is a collecter's edition for it. (Had I realized there were those versions before, I would have purchased them initially, just because I like have the fancy versions, and since this is now my current favorite game, I must have it. D:) I would have gotten it for PC before for myself as well but it was broken. I should get it back within a week, which is when I'll get that extra copy. That and I hear the PC version is better. And I can take screenies. And play with the toolset. And I'll probably end up buying the collecter's edition guide as well to match it, and send my other copy to my best friend since she's stuck in the mage's tower. That also means I'll be downloading everything again for the second time. I've also recently ordered the two books that are prequels to the game. I had to order online after driving to 3 different bookstores to find that none of them had copies. I honestly cannot remember that last time I read a book for leisure outside of high school, and I know it certainly wasn't a Sci-fi/Fantasy book. I've never been a Sci-fi/Fantasy book fan, yet here I am ordering TWO.
I'm not even the target audience and look how much money I've invested in this series already! Seriously, if there were little dolls or plush figures for DAO. I'd buy those too. ~_~ I'm not the hobbyist kind of person that buys a ton of video game paraphenalia. I've even started an EA account and bioware account just because of DAO - I've never done that before for any game. Sure, I'll like a game, look it up online, download a few wallpapers, maybe even get the soundtrack if I like it enough but there has never been a game that has hooked me like this. I've been playing games since I was 6 and I'm 23. I can also safely say that my best friend would probably also be on the same page as me if she wasn't epically stuck in the Mage's tower. The funnier thing is that when I gave her the PC copy, her boyfriend was thinking about buying the PS3 version as well, even though he knew his girl had the PC version. He saw the case and just thought it was cool. The box art alone is enough to draw sales.
Consequently, this title has me looking at other Bioware games and I'm wondering if there aren't more games like it. I tried ME for 360, but I am terrible with shooters that aren't on the PC because I always get the controls mixed up (i need inverted controls and more games only offer the Y axises inverted and not the x as well), and it seems like not matter what I do, my Sepherd always looks ugly. D: And you know....Kaiden isn't nearly as cute as Alistair. Still wondering about some other titles, but Ostagar is supposed to come out soon so I'll probably wait for that first.
Anyway, what was my point again? I mean I wasn't obviously who Bioware expected to reach out to, but here I am, and I've broken so many of my own personal no-nos just to fulfill my DAO experience. I don't know if that means anything, but I can't be the only person out there who's in this boat. Some part of their marketing worked - and boy did it ever. I'm sure that there are plenty of other people with similar cases. Even if I find I don't like any of the other games, I can safely say I'll be in it for the long run -for the sequels, the expansion packs, and as much as I hate to admit it, more DLC.
And yes, I will also just come out and say it - it's mainly due to Alistair. ~_~ You can bet your tushy I'm not paying all this money for Morrigan. Maybe the numbers aren't smashing right now, but it could very well one of those slow to start kind of things that builds up into mass proportions. Generally, females are more drawn to RPGs in general, if Bioware could find the successful formula to somehow find a way to tap into that market, I think it would be like finding an oil field in your back yard. Sure DAO has more females fans than most shooters, but nothing compared to say a Final Fantasy game or Kingdom Hearts ('m talking m/f ratio and not over all popularity). That and, you know, women tend to spend more money. >_>;;
Somewhere along the lines I think I lost my point so I am going to stop typing now.

I think in the long run DA will do great, just from my own reaction. Why? Well let me explain myself. First off, this is my first Bioware title. I'm not a big Xbox fan and I usually stick to the PS/Wii Japanese type rpgs. What caught my eye first was the box art. Shallow, yes, but hey, thats a part of marketing. I was walking by in Best Buy and saw the pretty box art and the ad for Pre-ordering. So I looked it up online and saw the trailer for it on youtube (the one with Duncan's voice explaining what a Grey Warden was and Cousland charging into Orzamar). My reaction: "Aw that looks badass! Yeah I'm going to go ahead and try it out." So I bought TWO copies, a PC version for my best friend and the 360 version for myself. Funny thing about that is I am not an xbox girl - don't really like it. Now let's not get into a discussion about why I don't like it, the fact is, this game and this company who I wasn't even interested in before just sold me a copy for a system I don't like. Turns out I become addicted and I bought the strategy guide. Big deal because I never buy those! Ever! I mean I normally think it's just a waste of money because I can look up anything online should I need the help - but I bought it against my normal thinking. On top of that, the FREE downloaded content got me to subscribe to XBOX. I am normally so against paying for online downloads because I feel like it is just ripping people off of their money - which is another discussion in it's self as well so I will skip that. But I still did it because I *had* to have the downloaded content. I even bought the additional DLC for completion sake and the fact that I had already beaten the game but still craved more from it. And although I hate the idea of paying for more additional DLC for a game (because techinically, that 60$ game is really more than 60$ with every D/L you purchase) I am EAGERLY awaiting for the Ostagar content. =/
As if that isn't enough, I am planning on getting a 3rd copy - one for PC, hoping that there is a collecter's edition for it. What I would take to find a single BW gamer who isn't a boy/man in my country. It's nice to hear BW having new fans who enjoyed the game like you do.
Kinda makes me realize that maybe what BW lacks in numbers of fans compared to the likes of Final Fantasy and Modern Warfare, it makes up for having loyal fans who will buy and play their games through the years.
