i liked the aspect of hardening, but it was damn near non-existent, the only way you knew were by the tone of Alistairs voice(never really heard him throughout the game), him speaking up at the landsmeet, his overall talk about being king, really, and Leliana....umm....i think the only noticeable way to know was her joining the threesome with Isabela.

Sure, but I try to avoid changing people too much. They should be who they are. So it wouldn't propably change my game much.

Some of Leliana's party banter was decidedly less sunshine-and-rainbows if hardened.

Funny that BioWare had the opposite of Hardening in BG2 - you can make Viconia more kind and "good".

I thought friendship and rivalry did a lot better to convincingly show different directions you could push the companion over time than the "What? Alistair is evolving! Press B to cancel." So it's a shame they're getting rid of it.

What we're really talking about here is having a PC impact on NPCs, which both DA:O and DA2 had. In DA2 it was reminding Leliana that being a bard is awesome, and in DA2 it was rivaling Merril and getting her to break the mirror.

The problem with DA2 is there was no consistency. You could change the mind of Sebastian, Merril, and Isabella, and that was it. Rivalling Anders or Fenris changed nothing about them.

It's not entirely necessary to earn rivalry with Merrill. Once you complete her final quest you can convince her to forget about the Dalish and help those around her.

Also in Anders case, earning rivalry status with him is the only way to convince him near the very end that what he did was wrong and to side with the Templars to atone for his actions.

With Templar-Mage war raging on there could be nearlly limitless possibilities for the Hardening:
- Convince a mage companion to embrace Blood Magic and unleash it on the templars to avange their opression.
- Turn templar companion to accept the idea of purging all mages.
- Turn Chantry sister against the Chantry, destroy her.belief in the Maker or teach her to consort with demons.
- Crush quinary's faith in the Qun.
Such a possibilities...

Bringing hardening back as an option would make DA3 better. I agree that not all characters should be optional for hardening but at least two should be optional. It should not be radical but a noticeable change.

I think they should bring it back for sure! But I'd like it to not be limited to making goody-two-shoes characters like Alistair and Leliana more worldly or mature or self aware. I think it should also be available to characters with Personalities like Morrigan or Fenris and Anders (from DA2) who can't seem to relate to people outside their own little box of their personal beliefs.I'm not saying they shouldn't have those beliefs, but I would like to be able to persuade them that not everyone who disagrees with them is an idiot or that they're not worthy or friendship or attention. (Reflected in the rivalry/disapproval scores you gain with them)

That's why the friendship/rivalry system was one of the better things in DA2, despite the fact I like a lot of things about origins better. At the end Fenris does admit that "you must be doing something right" and apologizes, which I appreciate greatly. (This is why it makes more sense to give him his last gift before you visit him for that scene, btw.) You can still have a relationship with a character even if you don't agree with them, unlike in origins where they just get hostile and their conversations are limited after until you can get their approval back up.

And I wish I had something like that friendship/rivalry for my DAO companions. So, I think that system coupled with hardening of some companions would make DA3 very enjoyable for me.

Uh, I don't see how hardening is that much different than rivalry. It just seems like rivalry lite to me. Look at Sebastian for instance and how he wants to run away from his duties to be all up in the Chantry instead, and you can "harden" him to get him to embrace his princehood. How is that not more or less Alistair's plot line minus details?

Well, you can also desecrate Andraste's Ashes without hardened Leliana turning on you if you pass an Intimidate check.

Absolutely support the return of 'hardening'. Although I'd like to see other forms of character development too, for example the ability to support a companion-companion romance (or ruin it) or being able to make other companions more compassionate. Although it'd be nice if we could also fail to do so, if some characters are just too set in their ways.

Another form of 'hardening' present in DA2 is the hardening of Hawke's personality via the predominant tone system. If you select the same response tone repeatedly, Hawke's dialog changes to reflect that dominant tone.

Hawke's dominant tone is not a "hardening" it's just another way to shot some autodialogues.
In DA:O, Leliana's hardening was related to her desire for more active lifestyle. Ideally, I would like to see that hardening related to her faith in the Maker. So you can crush that faith and slowly make her abandon all belief in her god, turn her inner world upside down. That would be truly awesome!

LOL you can Harden Isabella in DA2.If you romance her and do her Quest in ACT III depending on your choices she will either remain a bi_ch as she is right now, stay emotinally closed etc...Or she can become a moraly aware person, starting to help others, saying that she doesn't need material stuff, only you,and she actually becomes a normal person(still keeping her humor) who loves you and would do anything for you...If you do that, in MoTA Isabella will be jelaus if you filrt with Talis(otherwise she would support a threesome or something...) she will say thank god you are alright Hawke,i was afraid i will lose you and in some point Talis will say Isabella has an empty life with no pourpose and if she is Hardend she will say:I have a pourpose,It's Hawke I love him/her...

EDIT:
P.S i Would love ''Hardening in DA3'' A.K.A changing your companions personality based on your decisions...

Your spelling makes me sad. Also, this is not 'hardening'. -_-
