I've seen many posts on the BSN discussing roleplaying aspects. Things such as being able to choose the PCs race, having the PC silent and no more paraphrasing amongst others. However, one thing I have not seen, but I really would like to start seeing in these RPGs is the option to choose which hand is the PC's dominant hand.
It seems to be inconsequential to many people (at least in Elder Scrolls related forums where hatred was heaped upon me for suggesting it), but I wanted to give my opinion on this here. As a left-handed person, I've tolerated the lack of this choice in RPGs for years. Yet, ever since Nintendo decided that due to the Wii-Remote Link needed to become right-handed (no offense to the vast majority that are), I've started losing some of my immersion into many of these games. It's not a deal breaker, it's just disappointing.
What I'm trying to get at is that it would be a nice addition to choose which hand my character uses to wield his weapons in. I don't want to just rely on head canon that my character is a lefty, I want to actually see it. It's not a necessary feature, but I just wanted to bring this up. This is just my view though, what does anyone else think?

I'm all for player agency and choice, but I suspect it would be pretty darned expensive to implement, as they would need to double a lot of the animations.
Also - not sure whether this could be satisfied with purely combat animations or whether you would expect to see other things, like drinking something, with the predominant hand.

I'd be fine with just combat animations. It is where we'd see the most of our characters that way. I just want some sort of acknowledgement that there are left handed players who want their characters to use their left hands (though I can easily see Bioware coming up with some story related thing that prevents this from working...after all we are dealing with a medieval fantasy setting...grrr!).

If it's too expensive to implement as a PC choice, maybe it could work to have a left-handed NPC.

As long as the NPC was a party member, that would be a good start at least. I'm just tired of this neglect for left-handed people. Especially in these sort of games where they claim so much choice. Though I do understand why from a cost perspective.

I'm left handed.
And to be frank it never crossed my mind to look in what hand my PC held his weapon.
I guess you look for things that apply to you and want the opportunity to have the same for your PC.
Can relate to that
but its not something I need to have in customizing my character.

Yeah, sorry, that's what I meant

I see where you're coming from and I've noticed it for years too, but like other people have said, I think it would take too much time, money and effort to really pay off. Might as well that part to the imagination.
Though I actually think being right-handed in Dragon Age has more role-play potential since Thedas is basically fantasy Medieval Europe and being left-handed was thought to be a sign of the Devil in Medieval Europe, so children were forced to be right-handed or killed. (Maybe Mafarath was left-handed? Maybe Andraste was the "right hand" of the Maker, so all humans should be right-handed to strive for favour?)
I guess you can pretend that your character was pushed to be right-handed for whatever reason. Religious parents, whoever oversaw your martial training wanting you to fight the "right way," etc.

Actually, I tend to pretend my character is using his left hand. Especially since I've got a ton of head canon surrounding my City Elf.

A lot would depend on how immersive you wanted your experience to be. As a lefty who has attempted medieval-style combat, I can tell you that the learning curve is pretty steep. When you first start out- low levels- you're trying to deal with everything coming at you from your off side. Major penalties at low levels. Later on, you adapt, but your opponents don't, conferring a minor ability to hit.I've got a left-handed buddy who is three of the fastest guys I know with a longsword, but his experience was much like mine. Starting out, he had a heck of a disadvantage. Later on, he learned to compensate and is now at least as good, if not better than his right-handed opponents, but it took a long, long time getting there. As for me, I never had the time to invest, so I still get the snot kicked out of me every time I fight a righty.

I never thought of this. Fair enough OP.

In a world where cinematics are treated as a tool of storytelling, instead of being focused at, then you could see this. In fact, I've seen this option in many older CRPGs. But I can't see BioWare doubling effort with every cinematic where the character uses his hand for something - and anything short of that in a 'cinematic direction' would be mediocre, in my opinion.
Also, considering that we've more or less stagnated when it comes to choice and consequence in CRPGs for the last 10 years or so, I'd stick this on a low priority list. No doubt you can see why, but then again, I also see Romances as very, very low priority.

If you want to play an RPG where you can be a lefty, then go play Ultima Underworld.
Today's world of gaming is NOT one of tolerance!
Be off with you!

I totally agree that you should be able to choose your handedness - I think it being seen as too "cost intensive" is something of a cop-out these days. Part and Parcel of today's strEAmlined approach to game development.
Devs seem to just want to squeeze out a new game every one or two years, without putting thoughtful features in. Back in the day Handedness would have probably been put in without thought to extra dev costs or what have you - it would have just been seen as a cool little thing to be able to do.
Nowadays, if it's even put in at all it would probably be shoved out there as a MAJOR SELLING POINT!!! YAY AWESOME!!!

strangely although right handed, alot of the characters i created in my head (which i never get to do anything with sadly, so they stay in my head) are left handed because you don't see them that often.
Edit: also i don't see how hard it would be, just reverse the animations.
