What does it do?

Funny thing, I did it not too long ago. It unlocks a door near you. It's easily pickable so it didn't do anything for me.

Yeah, I couldn't figure that out. I must have simply picked it, because there was no other locked door to be found. It's certainly not anything special, because I don't remember getting anything significant from a locked room.

It unlocks his bedroom door if you didn't already pick it.

The room has one of the unique items in it that opens a Codex entry under "Items." I think it was called Magister's Spellshield? Might be wrong. It has several nice resistances on it, and a nature damage vulnerability. The key exists so you don't get screwed out of a unique piece of equipment, simply for not having a lockpicker in the party.

I wish they would make the key vanish from you or his inventory if you picked the door. The first run-through, I couldn't figure it out and worried I missed something.

I don't ask the questions, I just answered the one asked. 

I don't even recall if that door says "Bedroom Door" when you mouse over it.  Something thats easy to miss I guess.

Magister's Spellshield is friggin' awesome, especially for Arcane Warriors. Just sayin'.

If you've already unlocked a door by lock-picking, and only find the key after, it should give the message "I have no use for this anymore" or something similar. This is just to eliminate any unnecessary confusion and bag space. Hope they do something about this.
