Ok I bought one of these as a Rogue main character and only Morrigan as the mage and nothing happened.  It unlocked something but I can't tell what.

I thought it would upgrade Morrigan's shapeshifting skill, but she still only has spider form.

What does buying the book do in this situation?

It allows you to play as a shapeshifter on a player character.

Wasted money. She already has shapeshifting and the book just allows a mage to take shapeshifting.

You can always save, buy, then reload to get unlock the class AND keep your money.

I did that with Spirit Healer. I was a tiny bit miffed I couldn't learn it in dialogue, like Templar, Assassin, Berserker, Shapeshifter, and Bard, but I think Wynne never actually *learned* Spirit Healer, it just means you have bonded with a benevolent spirit. Ah well.

I don't think that's what spririt healer is, as her special plot ability, the self-rejuvinate + mind blast one (300 cooldown, I forget the name), isn't a spirit healer skill, it's a unique plot one.

When you unlock a specialization it means any other Mage characters can now become Shapeshifters. Most party members however start with one specialization (morrigan of course starts with Shapeshifter) to improve upon Morrigan's Shapeshifter you can use talents in the shapeshifter tree to unlock additional forms.
