The biggest surprise though was Vega. He was a hella fun squadmate. His interactions with the crew, especially Joker and Garrus were some of the best. Garrus was my favorite though, especially the citadel scene. EDI getting a body was kinda weird, but she's been a fun character since ME2 and the look of horror on Sheperd's face when she makes the joke about the Normandy's air supply was priceless (not to mention that voice).
Liara was pretty chill as usual, though her scene with the time capsule was baller. The reporter felt out of place but I didn't dislike her that much. I would have preferred Wong or something. The more I think about it though, the more I realize how much I enjoyed all of the characters. Ashley was somewhat of a disappointment, she seemed to have very little dialogue. I enjoyed her character but she just seemed to have very little content involved with her.
Literally all of them were awesome, I think that's why the ending and the lack of closure pissed me off haha.

I was hugely bummed out that Ashley wasn't in ME2. EDI having a body and trying to get close to joker was... fun.Niflheim Hex wrote...

I didn't get Javik and I can completely agree that steroid boy was pointless.
I'm kinda glad that the selection was a bit smaller. There's no way I'll ever have time to hear all dialogue from all characters from ME2, and to be honest, there were a few uninterresting characters in ME2 as well. I'm going to get huge hate, especially from the ladies, but I don't like Thane at all. I don't get why they replaced Wrex with Grunt and I don't really get why they introduced Miranda when we already had Ashley as a female human LI (one whom at least in ME1 seemed quite interresting). And of course Jacob, mister blandey bland.

Not to mention is a rather gaping plothole to have lots of useful NPCs sitting back on the ship drinking coffee. Exactly why I am down on this hellhole fighting three Ymirs at once while Thane, Garrus, Zaeed, and Jacob are back on the ship making wagers on whether Grunt, Jack, and I will survive?
As far as I can tell, when you go on a mission - canonwise - everyone goes along and is there. It's simply for game mechanics that you can only bring two people along. Because when talking to people, it's quite clear that Liara knows your ME2 squad, and Ashley comments on them as well, regardless of who you brought along to Horizon and the LotSB missions.

Should've gotten Kaidan and Tali way earlier. Also Liara got ALOT of dialogue compared to the other squadmates. I liked Vega and EDI, Javik was a nice change of pace since he doesn't blindly agree with everything Shepard does so I liked him. Garrus and Kaidan should have had more convos with Shepard. Never really cared about Tali but she should've been on the Normandy earlier so she would actually be useful. Is just me or would anyone else have preffered the option of getting Legion over Tali at the end of Rannoch?
Somewhat, but I would prefer Xen to Tali. I understand Legion giving itself to the Geth Collective, but a refund character should have been given.
Hell, I'll take my Abbadon character idea. DAO:A Justice like character, using a Cerberus Trooper with more Reaper husk parts, mind controlled by a Rogue Reaper willingly helping Shepard.

Yeah, but once you start down that path, you pretty much invalidate "this happened in game" as the basis for anything. Because what you play isn't what really happened.

EDI should never have had to go off the ship. Vega wasn't bad. The problem was that the last game of the series wasn't the game to introduce someone into the series. He seemed to be a younger, post-Akuze (canon Shep did Akuze, or all 3?), Shepard. He seems like he could have given a lot more depth and development to Shepard.
Javik was very good, but he should have been left even more as an "Avatar of War". More talk about Prothean military and the Reaper war, with less interactions on how the Prothean "Empire" (it had fallen by then) worked. Still, they handled him pretty well, and Javik seemed to me to be a good character.
I can understand that Wrex and the ME2 squad couldn't really be brought in. They could be dead, and having someone miss out on over half the squad because they role-played would have stunk. They should have added other characters from the series, however.
We could have had Kal'Reegar as a Quarian marine (Infiltrator style?), The Urdnot Scout (Sentinel?) as a gift from Wrex/Wreav, Captain Gavorn as help from Aria (Soldier/Vanguard?), Cptn. Matsuo as a re-instated Alliance Officer (could have served to replace Vega, maybe?), Shiala as an Asari Commando (if you let her live, which why wouldn't you?). . . there's a lot of ancillary characters through the series that could have been pretty good squadmates and had proven (or could prove for redemption) that they were badasses and worthy of working with Shepard!
I also wish that there were more dialog with ALL the characters. I can get that Garrus, Liara, and Tali were with Shep for more time and worked most with Shepard, but the VS shoudl ahve gotten more face time, Javik could have been more talkative, Vega could have asked Shepard more about his experiences and his opinions (letting the player flesh out his Shepard).
So yeah, the squad wasn't bad, but it could have been better.

Pretty poor. The people in the squad are great (Minus tin ******) but, without Kaidan, you have no Senintel and there is no Vanguard!
Javik is a vanguard he just has a assult rifle...Thane was a vanguard and used a sniper so its clear they dont need shotguns.

I liked Ashley in ME1 but Miranda seemed like a much stronger character. She got **** done. Honestly, outside of Garrus she seemed like one of the few squad mates that could accomplish something wihtout having to have her hand held.

For the other member it has usually been Javik or Garrus.
I didn't find the other squad members that attractive as a vanguard. Vega is a meat shield (which a vanguard doesn't need). The others are a bit meh (EDI and Ashley). Tali is OK but not my cup of tea

My opinion? The exact opposite of yours, apparently. I thought the ME2 squad was too big and had way too many annoying characters I didn't like. I was thrilled to get the band back together. Though all things being equal I would've rather kept EDI as the ship and had Legion as my robot buddy. Legion and Mordin were the only two ME2 characters I really got into.

Bad. It was dumb to cut the squadmate pool in half in the name of "more personal interactions". If they wanted to emphasize the importance of individual relationships they wouldn't have sidelined 3/4 of the LI's and filled the missing holes with a placeholder (EDI) and 2 new characters nobody gives much of a **** about beyond how much they dislike them (Javik/Vega).
In short: boo. Boo Bioware, bad.
Does anyone dislike Javik?

Xenophobic jackass who wakes up 50,000 years later to find all that he knew and loved is lost, people here are jackasses for a lot less than that.
<_<
It's called working out and a strict diet, people here should try that sometime
<_<
Boring and unwanted survivor from Virmire has alot of fans. If people find him/her so bad they have a chance to kill him/her.
<_<
When ME2 came out, all you could hear is the amount of people who thought there was to many sqaudmates. If they're not normal, they're stupid. If they're normal, they're boring.

That is completely wrong. Go play ME2 again and notice how they almost never talk to each other. How they never coment on things during missions or talk to characters other than Shepard. Notice how they only stand on one spot all the time waiting for the personal talk with Shepard.
Although I agree that the squadmates' limitations to their rooms was annoying, you are wrong when you say that they almost never talk to each other missions. One look at the ME Wiki's "Unique Dialogue" pages should be enough to disprove that notion.
There are several unique scenes in ME2 that only occur with specific sets of squadmates. Morinth/Grunt, Tali on Mordin's loyalty mission, Zaeed during Garrus' recruitment mission, Grunt on Omega, Garrus and Tali on the Derelict, Miranda during the pre-Human Reaper boss battle, etc.
DaJe wrote...
In ME2 Mordin should have been all over Grunt for example, instead they acted invisible to each other. Tali should have had more to say to EDI and Legion. I had no idea how Garrus and Tali thought about each other after all they have been through.
The Mordin/Grunt confrontation was scrapped to focus on fights between potential love interests (Miranda/Jack/Tali). As for Garrus and Tali, they have a conversation about what they saw in the first game if you take them to the Derelict.
