I feel that Garrus and Tali have no business being squadmates in mass effect 3. That doesn't mean that they shouldn't be in the game, but they shouldn't be squadmates. There is no LOGICAL reason for them to join you on the Normandy instead of either fighting the reapers or working on the crucible, not to mention that they haven't changed at all and have no interesting character development during mass effect 3. Bioware had the opportunity to introduce new and interesting perspectives for the mass effect 3 experience (which is what made 2 so entertaining for me) and instead they just fell back on what they knew.
+1
I wish they had given players more of an opportunity to customize who they wanted to have in their squad again, in a way that included all previous companions and incorporated the war asset system. Like in the main/recruitment quests make the player choose between several different options for a squaddie who plays sort of the same role. Shepard encounters Jack at Grissom and recruits her, then runs into Samara a couple missions later and invites her to join him. She can mention that if she comes with Shepard she can't support the cause where she is, and add that Jack, also a powerful biotic, is already with him. Then Shepard can decide whether to keep both of them, losing potential war assets but gaining good teammates (especially if Kaidan died and Shep's not a biotic), or leave Samara and/or Jack to contribute to the war effort and maybe even give an assignment or two.
This way, no one would lose their favorite team members; the war asset system would have much more interactivity and customization; there would be massive replay value due to the different assignments and conversations available depending on who's recruited/ left behind; and any Shepard, no matter who's survived up to that point and what class s/he is, can assemble a well-balanced squad.
Also I would be okay with EDI butting in to say the ship has only so much room if Shep tries to recruit more than 10 companions or something.
Obviously then the linear storyline would have to be tweaked and the writers and VAs would have to have put in much longer hours. Not to mention artists and devs. So maybe this is a pipe dream
