I wish they had given players more of an opportunity to customize who they wanted to have in their squad again, in a way that included all previous companions and incorporated the war asset system. Like in the main/recruitment quests make the player choose between several different options for a squaddie who plays sort of the same role. Shepard encounters Jack at Grissom and recruits her, then runs into Samara a couple missions later and invites her to join him. She can mention that if she comes with Shepard she can't support the cause where she is, and add that Jack, also a powerful biotic, is already with him. Then Shepard can decide whether to keep both of them, losing potential war assets but gaining good teammates (especially if Kaidan died and Shep's not a biotic), or leave Samara and/or Jack to contribute to the war effort and maybe even give an assignment or two.

This way, no one would lose their favorite team members; the war asset system would have much more interactivity and customization; there would be massive replay value due to the different assignments and conversations available depending on who's recruited/ left behind; and any Shepard, no matter who's survived up to that point and what class s/he is, can assemble a well-balanced squad.

What an excellent idea. I really, really love this.

And then maybe we'd get to see ME3 in late 2013.

You're right, but I might have been fine with waiting another year for a game I would have gotten five times or more the play time out of. Also if they add character-driven DLC now like many seem to want it will be the same principle, just moving the content from the release date to an unspecified future date.

It doesn't work like that. In order to not make a character feel out of place they need to be included beyond pure combat gameplay, which includes interactions with NPCs, meaning you would have to bring back lots of voice actors for just one character. That's not going to happen.

If one piece feels out of place it also makes you question other pieces.

In the case of character-driven DLC, yes, but that isn't what I was advocating. I was simply stating that that is something I see a lot of people asking for. My suggestion wouldn't involve bringing back "lots of voice actors for just one character" because if they had implemented it during development the voice actors would have already been on hand, they would have just had to record more lines than they do (Seth Green recording his reaction line to the latest pickup and whatnot).

I generally liked the squad in ME3. Yes I would have liked to have more people but in the end I wound up using Garrus and Liara the whole time away so it didn't really matter. On a side note, me and my best friend had the same reaction when we found out EDI was a squad member. A collective "WTH?"

i personally hated Javik and James.

Javik should've been a scientist that is a room filler on the normandy that gives intel and input on missions while James was a comeplete waste of a good squadmates place.
i get he was there for the new crowd, but honestly has no reason to acknowledge him unless he is going to be the next shepard in whatever comes after ME3.

the fact that the game was based on decisions (apparently) i think it would've been amazing if we were give a set few squadmates, but then had the oppurtunity to recruit others ourselves.
for example if one wanted thane, they could recruit thane. If someone else wanted miranda, then they could recruit miranda instead. There should have been 1 or 2 spots that were left unfilled where you got to choose which one you wanted.

other than that it wouldve been nice to have 1 squadmate spot that had every squadmate at one time there. For example start with Virmire survivor, then after a few missions have that character go and do his own thing within the game. Then have another old squadmate come in for mission or setting specific missions. Then of course rinse and repeat until all of the mates from previous games have gone on some missions.

Just resurect Gillian Grayson and make her as DLC.

I would love to find her in some Cerberus base, on life support after the events of ME: Deception. Just say that T.I.M. took her body and used leftover lazarus project stuff. I mean she very important to him and Cerberus.

I dunno I kinda felt that the squad layout was more balanced (in terms of powers). Everyone felt more well-rounded and taking Garrus wasn't a death sentence on husk missions. Ashley increased the firepower of my squad (giving her a falcon or revenant made her a death machine)

Interaction wise, I kinda felt Ashley was a little weak. Could have used more.

Garrus - Is my bro. No matter what, he's there. There's no Shepard without Vakarian. (No swap)

Liara - Giggity. My Love Interest. Having her on my ship again was cool. I liked how she'd matured. (No swap)

Kaidan - Sceptical. A little too sceptical. Still, I consider him a bro. (No swap)

Ashley - I don't like some of her motivations. Sorry, Ash. (Swap)

Javik - What a twist! Javik was pretty cool. I kind of *SPOILERS* made him want to commit suicide, but that's no biggie. (No swap)

Tali - She's like a masked, female, tech-oriented version of Garrus. Been there through it all. She deserves a spot on the Normandy. (No swap)

James - Meh. Interesting character, but not complex. At all. (Swap)

EDI - Although I'm happy for Joker... You know... (Swap)

I'd swap Ash for Grunt. I consider Grunt to be my badass, krogan son of sorts.

James would go out the window for Kasumi. Kasumi was gorram amazing.

I'd replace EDI with Jack, no doubt.

Wrex, Legion and Mordin would be there, but you know how they're so busy these days.

Bad.

EDI never needed a body. She was the intelligence of the Normandy and I was completely fine with that.

Javiik ruined the mystery of the Prothean race. I don't think I ever wanted to see a Prothean.

James was not needed. I never needed another bland soldier. He has just taken the place from some great character.

Ashley. Why was she there again? She contributed absolutely nothing to the plot if you are not romancing her.

I was fine with Liara, Tali and Garrus since they are Shepard's "old friends".

Overall the squad is simply too small and filled with characters I don't give too much emotion on. It's just just less characters, but also less interaction with them. The ME2-squad was much better worked out. I really missed most of them.
Mordin, Wrex and Legion were okay as a temporary asset however.

Eh, tbh, I knew that we were going to have a new squadmate, James, but I also assumed at least 1 squad member from ME2 would be back. Just like how Garrus and Tali made it into the second game. I wanted at least 1 person back.

I was happy with the work they did with squad member in ME3. In my opinion characters interation is one of the best things in the game.

For the first time the Normandy seems finally "alive". In ME1 and ME2 we had people who never came out from their place/room and which used to talk only with Shepards.. they acted like the other members of the crew were not existant. They just seemed like many nice talking-ornaments .
The only few exception were a couple of fight between Miranda and Jack and Legion and Tali and anything else. Now they finally move from their room, and you can find each of them in different places of the Normandy, sometimes talking to each other, sometimes chatting trough the interphone. They finally gave me the feeling to be a "squad" who did not care only about Shepard.

Oh and finally their feelings were not only directed toward Shepard but they can build frienships and also romances between each others.

I thought I would miss the ME2 squad but I didn't. Every character in the ME3 squad was interesting and the smaller size meant the banter was back which adds so much to the game. Companion numbers should be kept close to this number in the future.

Well of course it was, the number of powers squad members now have has been multiplied. In Mass Effect 2, everyone had only 3 powers, excluding the passive one.

I liked the returning squad members, wasn't really keen on Javik or Vega. I would have much preferred a quiet and noble Prothean scientist like the one Vigil was based on Ksad Ishan.

See before I played the game I was actually worried that Javik was going to be a noble Prothean scientist, i was dreading boring conversations about how glad he is that his sacrifice wasn't in vain and how proud he is of all the new races for embracing the Prothean legacy and learning about the Reapers existence whilst there's still time to stop them.  I was sick of characters talking about how great I am and how much they like me, so when I started talking to Javik and he turned out to be a bit of an ass I was happy, in the same way that Jack or Miranda were interesting to talk to in ME2, there was a lot of conflict at times and I thought that made them seem more like real people.

I ended up liking the new characters a lot more then the returning ones (minus James, he sucks). I've always loved Garrus, but Tali and Liara were just alright. Everyone was really enjoyable though, I just wish we got some ME2 characters.

Well as ME3 offered my favorite combination from ME1 (Ashely and Garrus) it was fine for me. And till Ashley was available, I used Vega and Garrus without any problem. And I do not get the DLC, sorry, but when someone is 50k years extinct, he is extinct. Period.

I liked EDI as a character, but as a squadmate she was absolutley useless IMO. Wasted space on squad. Except for EDI I liked the squad selection.

I'll be cool with that. I rather wait another five years for them to polish the game, instead of getting this rushed product they had the quad to call artistic integrety.

I loved Javik. If you can't handle a true renegade, don't talk to him. He doesn't "ruin" protheans unless you're as naive as Liara was. He doesn't need to be nice, he's living with a bunch of inferior creatures, fighting the reapers all over again. Some of you are so soft, he's an excellent companion in battle with a great weapon.

I could have done without EDI and James tbh though, would rather have Jack and Miranda back. Swap James for Grunt/Wrex and EDI for Jack/Miranda and I'd be happier, but at least I got Tali. I'd never play ME without Tali.

I don't have a problem with the smaller squad, it's the way it should be imo, 12 was way too much...
I do have a problem with the squadmates i had to swallow in ME3 however...

VS (always Ashley in my case) ??? what a major pain and utterly irrelevant.
Liara??? Very usefull on the battlefield, boring and creepy on the Normandy...
Wasn't she the Shadowbroker? why is she has no usefull intel...
Edi??? I'm totally fine with her on the Normandy, she is a waste of squad member slot though.
Tali??? Let's not even go there...
Vega is a cool character, a lot better than Carth or space Kanye, and a bad mother as a squadmate (i was really surprised, Revenant (scoped) and explosive ammo, i remember thinking what the heck? Vega is killing everyone before i can snipe them :o), but i still would rather have one of my old school favorites over him.

Bottom line, only Garrus is worth his spot... and many ME2 characters were underused.

James was a waste, and there could have been more variety.

Javik definitely should have been on disc. Feels too empty without him.

I think The squad members are ok... most of ppl will use garrus and Tali, liara if you push me so... What matters who are the others lol.
About VS I prefer Kaidan, more interesting than Ashley, and well we have Vega no need another soldier, srry Ash ;D. EDI... its fun to have her around but i dont think she is needed as a squad member, she can hack from the normandy or talk to you via omnitool.
And javik... i think it makes sence, we needed a real reference to what happened to the proteans, to explain us why they fail, etc, and its a good squad member although I prefer ME1 characters for misions
PD: I really enjoyed all crew's banters specially when Vega is involved<<< Vega its really underrated poor him...
