I also have a problem with Mass Effect 1, Windows 7 x64. When I start it with .exe in the folder, it just happened to run ONCE. With administrator, compatibility mode, etc. With no patch, no Bring Down the Sky installed. Then I installed patches, and game is not accepting my ORIGINAL code for the game, I bought it physically, not on Steam. Oh, and I am first and only onwer of the game. Previously I played it once on Vista or XP, can't remeber really.

So what the hell is going on? Game is not working at all. With patches, it doesn't recognize the code from the instruction, without patch 1.02 is demanding original DVD, which I put in. Please help, on can BioWare finally make a patch for Windows 7? I ca
nnot play!

Also, the Bring Down the Sky DLC, with NEW key from EA Support, does not work. Is ME1 even playable under Windows 7 x64?<_<

It is. I've run ME with the DLCs through at last two full playthroughs and had almost zero problems...ONCE I got it working that is. The problems you mention are a combination of...

- known bugs, specifically the one not accepting the DVD in drive
- known problems, the key for BdtS / ME itself has a limited number of activations

And as stupid as that sounds, my solution back then was to buy the game again. -.- Yeah I know, idiotic! It was on sale on Steam back then, I payed 5$ (US gift code).

Normally the EA support should be able to do something about it, but in the case of ME they seemed rather clueless. They were not able to help me.

If you really cannot play the damned thing you bought...look for other methods. I mean seriously, after all legit solutions fail, what can you do? EA can hardly demand for everyone to buy the game a second time just to fix these problems.

Especially since I fear it does not actually FIX them, just postpone them. Maybe it will happen again, since activations are bound to your hardware key. This key changes based on your PC hardware. When you get a new harddrive, or any other essential system component, it changes and another activation is used up!

Welcome to the wonderful world of EA Digital Rights Management*.

PS: The only idea about the DVD-problem would be to try to activate the retail code with Origin. It's a terrible idea, I know, since you're basically switching one DRM for another. But an Origin copy should run without the DVD in drive!

PPS: I guess since the last time I ran into problems things have developed, maybe in a positive way. Have a look at the few BdtS-topics floating around this forum. Especially this one: http://social.biowar...1/index/9618640 Maybe one of them provides a solution.

Thanks for reply. In case none of those above works - are saves from alternative version of the game works with legitimate ME2 and ME3?

Man, this is ridiculous...

My new laptop has Windows 7. I just installed Mass Effect but when I click 'play' it tells me that the Configuration Utility has stopped working, anyone else encounter this problem?

Okay, I managed to fix the above issue by downloading patch 1.02, however I still can't seem to get the game running. Not sure why. Any ideas? Thanks.

Try to run it as an administrator or something, compatibility mode... Sometimes it helps, but from what I remember now, ME1 PC version is full of bugs and terrible DRM.

Thanks :) I ran it as an administrator and it's working - yay!

I've only ever played ME1 on the Xbox and that was a few years ago now. It'll be fun to play it through again, although not sure how well it will run on my laptop overall... well, I better get playing it and find out. Thanks again.
