What you get:
- ~4250 effective shield/health points (assuming your base values are ~850; 850/0.2 is 4250).
- The opportunity to engage in close combat and kill enemies using your weapon of choice, and you will not take health damage unless you screw up™

What you need:
- Vanguard Shepard
- Barrier/Defense Matrix/Fortification bonus power specced for maximum damage resistance (30%)

How it works:
Biotic Charge has a hidden perk - 50% damage resistance that lasts 4 seconds. Combined with Barrier, it nets you a whopping 80% damage resistance for the duration of 4 seconds. As long as you keep your Charge cooldown at (or slighlty under) 4 seconds, you are good to go.

I rolled with Claymore X (+145% recharge speed bonus) and Inferno Armor (+30% recharge speed bonus). Barrier comes with 60% recharge speed penalty.
Charge cooldown was exactly 4 seconds using this setup. Any weapon loadout is fine (I tried Claymore, Raider, and Graal), but I'd not recommend going for Charge cooldown significantly shorter than 4 seconds. Otherwise you will be tempted to Charge when you can just shoot stuff :D

Needless to say, you are virtually invincible after every Charge, and thanks to slightly longer cooldown (~4s), you have enough time to deal a ton of weapon damage. That said, you will die real quick if you do not find your next Charge target immedietaly.

I think this is viable, weapon-oriented alternative to the NovaGuard. Barrier could also be used by NovaGuards, but that is for another thread.

This video shows Claymore Vanguard specced for 80% DR. Charge CD at 4s is ideal for Claymore reload cancelling.

Update:

My current build is this:

Incendiary Ammo: rank 4 - Damage, rank 5 - Headshots, rank 6 - Explosive Burst
-Best ammo in the game

Charge: rank 4 - Force and Damage, rank 5 - Weapon Synergy, rank 6 - Barrier
-Maximum weapon damage and barrier replenishement upgrade

Assault Mastery: rank 4 - Damage, rank 5 - Weight Capacity, rank 6 - Shotgun Damage
-Maximum weapon damage

Fitness: Max. shields and health

Barrier: rank 4 - Barrier Strength, rank 5 - Power Synergy, rank 6 - Barrier Strength
-Greatly increases Shepards effective shields between Charges, making him very hard to kill by standard enemy fire

Nova: rank 4 - Force and Damage, rank 5 - Power Recharge, rank 6 - Pierce
-Nova is used only rarely, but since we get so many points, it might as well be maxed out.

Shockwave:
rank 4 - Radius, rank 5 - Reach, rank 6 - Recharge Speed
Pull:
rank 4 - Radius, rank 5 - Expose, rank 6 - Double Pull
-Combined, these two powers allow Shepard to create his own biotic bombs - useful if you don't take two biotic squadmates

Cryo Ammo: rank 4 - Squad
-Extremely effective passive buff that greatly increases squadmates' survavibility

Vids:
Grissom Academy - Making way to the shuttles
Eden Prime - Stasis Pod Defense

Is that Two Steps from Hell? Off topic, but have you ever gotten any copyright notices on YouTube using that music?

And on topic -- AWESOME. I'm getting so many ideas from your builds.

NG+ games allow upgrades to level X.

Yes, it's Two Steps from Hell. You can add their music to your vid and YT will not take it down:)

Hmm....

Unfortunately, I do not use Shotguns as much as my SMG or Chakram Launcher, although I do carry one.

You can use pretty much any weapon. I just like shotguns a lot. In that 4s window during/after Charge, enemy fire basically cannot kill you (turrets can though). All you have to do is pay attention to enemies that can easily stagger you and find the next Charge target as soon as your CD is reset. It's not as effective as Nova spam, but it is a lot more fun, for me anyway.

I've been using Javik with James/Garrus. I removed my Disciple for the full 200%, I'm also using Collector Armor.

I'll give you that, it's definitely more enjoyable then slamming Nova. Still, I've got Nova maxed out just in case, I keep forgetting I have Shockwave and pull, but meh.

LOL, I pity the 1st Banshee, 6 Lift Grenades to the face, that should give her something real to scream about.

Cheers!
Yea, that's exactly what I expected from ME3 Vanguard. Took some time to figure it out, but I am really happy with this shotgun-heavy build.

Very awesome, good to see we can still burn people down with the claymore in ME3. Btw, loved how you punched that banshee right in the ass and killed it.

Bookmarked.

This is probably the manliest VG build I've seen so far, and I like it very much. Awesome stuff.
I will give it a go once I unlock Barrier (still stuck on my second playthrough with Kaidan as the VS).

Thanks for this Kronner. Having a great time with the Claymore Vanguard so far!

P.S. Do you have any tips to get the most out of the reload canceling? I noticed that you have to stand still when you use the spacebar for this to avoid rolling around.

I have modded the controls (which is very limited unfortunately) to have one button for sprinting, rolling and cover - and one for activating stuff (picking up things, opening doors, reviving etc). I can use this (new) button to cancel reloads but it only works when I'm moving left / right / forward. Backtracking and/or standing still won't trigger it. But hey, Vanguards do not stand still and retreating is for cowards so no big deal anyway ;)

Glad you enjoy this build!

I do two types of reload cancels on this build:

a) using Charge..i.e. I come out of Charge, and shoot. Claymore starts reloading and thanks to Charge's CD of 4 seconds (does not have to be exactly 4s, around 4 is good enough), by the time Charge is ready, so is the Claymore. Therefore, Charging cancels the latter half of the reload, so I have a shot ready after ever Charge. It's a perfect synergy.

B) using Spacebar. For it to work, you need to let go off all other keys. Basically stop for a brief moment, aim, and press space at the right time and the latter half of the reload is cancelled.
Sometimes it can be tricky and I screw up the reload by pressing a movement key too early, and when that happens the reload needs to be started from scratch again. Also, if you are near cover, you will still reload cancel, but Shepard will take the cover anyway.

Based on my experience so far, the B) option is beneficial in some cases (when there's not too many enemies around, for example), but usually it's better to simply Charge(+biotic bomb)+one shot kill.

Yeah, I had to many times ending up in cover while trying to shoot something. I also really like Slam on my Vanguard, it's cooldown is perfect to cancel reloading. I basically shoot one guy, reload and cancel with Slamming another dude so I can shoot the third one in line :)

When I've completed this playthrough I will try the Claymore on my Adept. I think that might work well with all those fast recharging powers.

Damn it feels good to hang around with the best weapon of the ME series :)

Thanks for showing us how it is done!

I find extremely convenient scrolling mousewheel down assigned to medigel to cancel reload.

That's a good idea. Going to try this, thanks for the tip!

Played right Vanguard are able to avoid health damage anyway :)

Yeah, medigel works perfectly. It's too bad you need to sacrifice one hotkey slot for it though. There's only 8 hotkey slots, which is not enough imho.

wait. can you resign the hotkeys? Because I don't like the way it's "default" unlike single player I can choose my own hotkey layout

if so, please tell me, because I don't see it in the options
