Well, it's certainly possible. I've done a number of runs with no chunkings before. However, I also have just as many runs WITH chunkings. It does seem difficult to succeed first try.

It seems arbitrary somehow. I mean, the PC gives up the quest, just because a party member was permanently killed? Gorion means more to the PC than that.

I'll grant you that the way you have it setup it's a challenge, but whether it's worthwhile to do on a on-going basis, I guess we need more data to determine that.

I’m bored with all things Elf so...Announcing; the return of PUK’! (strictly) on a part time basis you understand.

Posted Image

Read about the Original PUK’ here.

Puk’ Darkstar (Tyrion Lannister) is a Gnome Fighter/ Illusionist/ Cleric who was mistakenly labelled a Half-elf when he first came to live at candlekeep because of his unique physical condition. Puk' is goal ordinated (almost psychotically so) & maintains that destiny has something special in store for him but he also has a strong friendship & possibly a slight adolescent crush… with Imoen who unfortunately only looks upon him as something of a younger brother… actually they are the exact same age. The strong bond between them traces its foundations from a valuable Rabbits’ foot (healed him of his Half-elf appearance ) gift which Imoen ‘picked-up’ for him in payment for some magic tutoring, regardless… Puk' has now recovered from his afflictions & disregarding the dire warnings of others has started actively wooing his precious Imoen!

GoG BG1 with these Mods; his lucky Rabbits’ foot (I used NearInfinity to turn him from a Half-elf FMC into a Gnome Fighter/ Illusionist/ Cleric - but no other in game effects ).

Good luck USSNorway - here's hoping Imoen doesn't get chunked what a blow that would be!

Well Kara's run came to an end today. Perhaps I'll do a re-do run in the Minimal Reload Challenge. Hmm..Actually, that doesn't sound like a bad idea. Heh.

Major Battle: Raemon, Hakt, Britik and Venkt.
Tactics: Jaheira cast Remove fear, and entangle. Imoen cast her sleep spells. Kara cast her magic missile and mirror image. Also, Jaheira cast Light Cure Wounds on Khalid.
Posted Image
Major Battle: Kysus
Tactics: Took of Kara’s armor and had her cast mirror image, and magic missile. Imoen cast sleep, and Agannazar’s Scorcher. Jaheira cast Entangle, and Shillelagh. Khalid used a potion of invulernablity. Branwen cast Bless, and Chant.
Posted Image

Posted Image
The Deathblow: Khalid and Jaheira got chunked by the same lightning bolt! D'oh!

Note: Oh, well that was entertaining. Hmm, I probably should have used some potions of absorption! Back to the Minimal Reload Challenge I go.

UD1: 16 days 12 hours;

SapphireIce101, Sorry M8.
corey_russell, If you Jinx me I'll scream!

After finishing my chores I purchased a heavy shield, helmet & sling then set off on my grand adventure... Gorion’s death doesn’t count right?
Lion's Way; Collect Imoen, Xzar, Montaron & a diamond.
Friendly Arm Inn; Ring of Wizardry (unidentified), kill Tarnesh with the guards help then swap in Khalid and Jaheira... Xzar, is too much of a liability.
Peldvale; Viconia & “Plate Mail Armour”... bargain.
Beregost; Kaigan & “+1 Sling” for Vik... I have to divert north to the Decimated caravan in order to keep him and tree hugger is getting impatient with the delay.
South Beregost Road; Kill some sleeping Ogrillons and another “Plate Mail Armour”.
Nashkel via Durlag's Tower; 2 “Stone to Flesh” scrolls... studying all the old maps back at Candlekeep finally payed off.
Nashkel Carnival; Branwen... kick the tree hugger.
Nashkel Mines; “Wand of Frost” (unidentified).
Gibberling Mountains; “Ring of Fire Resistance” (unidentified).
Valley of the Tombs; “Wand of Monster Summoning”, “5 Arrows +2” & “Chainmail Armour +1” for Vik (all unidentified).
High Hedge; “identify” scroll... successfully scribed yippee.
Mutamin's Garden; Kaigan B-slaps Shar-Teel (Dual her to thief) into joining and I now have my six... at least until Tiax.

p.s. Sorry for the clipnotes version.

You create your character on the vanilla character creation screen and then fill your party as quickly as is reasonable with five other Bioware npc's. You may kick and switch out at will, but NPC pairs may not be separated. BG Tweaks and SCS are off-limits.

If you want to get NPCs as quickly as possible, presumably that means recruiting the party used for testing in CandlekeepPosted Image?

Nah, I meant as fast as is reasonable. I usually go with Imoen, Khalid, and Jaheira to start (carrying Xzar and Monty to the FAI to help with the assassin and then switching out), pick up Minsc in Nashkel, and move out to get Dynaheir. So there's a lot of wiggle room here. There's a little while with some xp bonuses accruing the way I play it, but I think that's the way the game was intended. I guess I could head up and get Ajantis first and then switch him out for Dynaheir later to reduce xp bonuses.

Basically, I just want to have fun with it, and leave every one else some flexibility in how they want to try it. The idea is just to carry six party members for most of the game.

I must admit that one of the games that I've always planned to play is one that consists of the party in Candlekeep. However I've never got round to it yet. Posted Image

Its alright, I think its kind of funny how the same lightning bolt chunked both, Khalid and Jaheira. I even told one of my friends, and he thought it was kind of funny.

Good luck and have fun ussnorway!

Condolences, Sapphire. Thanks for trying the party challenge. Good luck, USS Norway and Grimwald (if you decide to try it).

@USS Norway, I like your roleplaying idea with Imoen and "Tyrion Lannister". That guy's got to be the best fictional character on TV right now. Kudos to Peter Dinklage for creating the perfect template for everyone who loves to play (male) gnomes, halflings, and dwarves.

@Sapphire, I hate those dang lightning bolts! I've lost several no-reloads to those.

BTW, don't forget, this challenge works just as well as a minimal reload. There's no need to have your run be over with one disaster unless you're not having fun with it any more.

I just kind of missed the kits, and some of mods. I mean, I have to admit that playing a bard is kind of fun, and I thank this challenge for letting me try it.

Progress (and everything else) is slow... Where was I? O yes, no hit points, weapons or money to buy them since my reps in the toilet. Talking to Bassillus about the facts of life (or in his case death) got me a nice “+2 War Hammer” 5000 gold & some experience... bargain.

I used the cash to get a “+1 Short-Bow” for Imoen then headed for the village of my smurf relatives * where Molkar donated another “+1 Morning-Star” for me but my luck started running out and then Kaigan disappeared under a mass of steal and I needed two “Wand of Frost” shots to finish the battle favourably so no more magic items... Still it could have been worse, I suppose.
* Actually Gnomes and Halflings are not related but good luck trying to tell that to the large folk.

Gratz on your progress, UssNorway. Great screenshots. Too bad about Kagain, but at least he's not chunked.

I actually find the "slow" progress of BG1 with a six-person party to be appealing - it's more rewarding to me when I see my party and me finally starting to get some higher levels. It makes me feel like I've (we've) earned it.

I'm one of the minority who prefers BG1 over BG2.

I've seen this comment a lot & prefer BG1 myself even though BG2 and TOB would seem like improvements. I suspect the balance of opinion may be more even than is generally thought.

I prefer BG 1 to BG 2 as well. I like the fact that I'm free to explore in BG 1 - in BG 2, you can't even get to most places unless you talk to the right people. Also, in BG 1 quests were OPTIONAL, meaning you can just do what you want. You can't expect to get very far in BG 2 if you don't do the quests. The numerous waylays in BG 1 also definitely spicens things up. There are a few waylays in BG 2, but once they are triggered, you never get any more -- but it takes quite a while for BG 1 to get to the same situation.

Killing two assassins earned Imoen her 4th level so she took advantage of the bg1 rule quirks and dualed into an Illusionist before putting Mulahey to sleep... a single “Necklace of Missiles” shot dismissed his would-be rescuers.
The party isn’t thrilled about being heroes but I lead them on a bandit killing spree that soon got us hired by Taugosz... bad help is hard to find it seems?

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

Imoen bated her pink eyelashes at Venkt and the seven of us cleared out the command tent then asked him to prove his devotion by emptying his spellbook on himself (love hurts). I got all inspired by his emotional display and volunteered to set off the lightning trap. This was near fatal despite my PfE robe but I decided that any of the others would likely get splatted and seemed like a good compromise at the time. Any way we stepped out and managed to tag Taugosz with a ‘Magic Missile’ without sending the whole camp into an uproar... his demise earned Kaigan better armour & I hit level two in my arcane.

I’m going to invest in a "Wand of Fireball" for Imoen before upsetting Viconia with a spider hunt... mmm, perhaps I’ll kick her for this next part?

UD5;

I swapped Viconia for Coran then replaced him with Eldoth, skipped the druids & wyverns and started clearing the mines before committing suicide at the Entrance chamber of level 3... Vanilla BG1 ‘Fireball’ is a larger radius than BG2 (Tutu) ‘Fireball’.

Posted Image

At this point I remembered that BG1 doesn’t do Autosaves so 2 hours play went down the spurt... take two = fire to the back of the room this time genius!

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

Davaeorn blinked about a bit before summing wolves to fight against our skellies which Eldoth swiftly put to ‘Sleep’... Two more ‘Fireball’s (to the back of the room) settled the delinquent mage & we flooded the mine. We got ambushed by wyverns on the way back to FAI but the bounty on their heads easily covered Branwens medical bill.

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

Shar-Teel wanted the “Shadow Armour” to help with her scouting/ BS so we tested it out by exploring the caves below the Gnoll Stronghold & found a book titled “How to make friends”... apparently humans consider picking your toenails (in public) to be rude?

Eldoth wants to visit his girlfriend in NW Baldur's Gate so we grabbed Tiax as he is on the way... kicked Branwen.

I only play on weekends now so the posts are spread out... sorry for the delay but should be finished next time.

Reloads = 1 (death by ‘Fireball’).

Awesome progress, and great screenshots, USSNorway! LOL at your tongue-in-cheek joke about "Branwen's medical bill".

Condolences on the fireball accident, but isn't it interesting how much we forget about what vanilla was like after years of playing with mods?

UD6;
I had an early day today so I managed to get a bit of game play done.

Money, Money, Money:

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

I needed funds to recharge the wands so we kicked Imoen for Skie then payed a visit to Elkart ($1000) at the Blade and Stars... rest 10 times then talk to him again... rinse repeat 7 more times for $8000- $70 inn fees, a total $7930 profit! Eldoth also makes 5 poison arrows as a special ability and only he can use them... a fact he must have forgotten to point out to the store keeper.

Recruitment drive:

Posted Image  Posted Image

Under my comprehension of the challenge rules, kicking the underwhelming Skie means also losing Eldoth so I needed two new kill buddies and my first pick is Faldorn because as a true Druid she has access to some good spells and can wear one of the Ankheg Plate Mails plus unlike a certain other NPC Druid she comes with a useful special ability (Summon Dread Wolf)... nagging doesn’t count as an ability.

The 2nd and last NPC is Safana... with the tome of Intel from Baldur's Gate she duals to Illusionist and supplants Imoens’ spot as my back up wand/ caster.

Drizzt must Die!

Posted Image

A vanilla Drizzt Do'Urden can be easily dispatched using summons... just be sure to drop them directly on top of him or the little so & so will dice them up before taking any return damage. Shar-Teel gets his armour (allows stealth) and Faldorn grabs the +3 Scimitar... no one in my party can use Defender so I’ll probably just sell it.

Reloads = 1 (death by ‘Fireball’).

Grats USSNorway on taking down Drizzt! By the way, for the first time ever, I completed the werewolf island quest with Dogdancing - it was excitig, having little clue what was coming up.

Defeating the island can be exceedingly difficult if not impossible if you can't use the right weaponry.

However, with your party, it would be a reasonable but difficult challenge. Glad you enjoyed it.

I'm having to use mods to keep getting fresh challenges. Posted Image

We do in fact. We also play chess and the magic the gathering together. We used to play Everquest together too, but due to tight finances we had to give that past-time up.

I figured I could try my hand at this. I'm not that bad a Baldur's Gate. But I'm no meta gamer, so I expect I will have a ton of by-the-hair-of-my-neck saves. I am entering an elven fighter/thief named Alaric.

[Edit] Tried to put up screenshots, but I failed....Sadly:(

Well, shouldn't be that hard to get through candlekeep. Afterwards is when the game starts after all. But man am I worried about facing TotSC. It's going to be SOOOO hard. I haven't ever played it, though I have beaten BG1 before.

My game is completely Vanilla.

Just a small update to say I’m still here... been running around doing little no stress quests for Rep, tomes & my new “Helmet of Defense”. The [please save my dead son] quest was particularly nice because I got a “Tome of Wisdom” and Kaigan gets the +1 tower shield which makes him -10 armour... wonderful for tanking Doppelgangers.

p.s.
Apparently the entire Iron Throne Empire was being run by four squirrels?

@ussnorway, Thanks. I'll try my best.

Speaking of which, I am here for the update!
Alaric loses Gorian to the mysterious Armored Fiend and now he rushes to the Friendly Arm Inn. He wants to go back to where Gorian died, but he is incredibly scared being out here alone. That's when a familiar voice calls out to him. Imoen had followed him and gorian in the dead of night wanting to go on an adventure as well. He accepts his old friend with heartfelt gratitude for anyone to be at his side and the duo goes to the Friendly Arm.
They don't get too far before they run into a suspicious duo (what's with these duos?) that offer them both aid and company. They ask for him to go with them to Naskel, to which he agrees since he desires more company.
They quickly backtrack to Gorian's corpse to obtain anything for their journey ahead of them. As they move along, Alaric spots a diamond in a tree, much to Imoen's joy (now she wants to shop!).

The party reaches the Friendly Arm without much trouble. An assassin attacks Alaric, but he is instantly killed by a life draining spell from Xzar (Is he Xan or Xzar?). They then meet Jahiera (how do you spell her name?) and Khalid who join the party of four. The couple is very suspicious of the company Alaric keeps though, since Montaron and Xzar are both clearly insane. As they leave the inn, Alaric - once again with his keen eyesight - spots a ring at the base of the tree. A storekeeper later identifies it as the Ring of Wizardry.
They continue on to Beregost for a rest before they continue on to Nashkel. Following the road, the party meets little trouble and easily arrives in Nashkel. But as they enter the Inn, yet another assassin attacks. With periodic Minor Life Drains from Xzar/Xan and an assault of five ranged warriors (Khalid was forced to melee), the assassin drops without a successful spell. The party then rests with Alaric receiving a strange dream that grants him the power to heal.
A man later approaches the party in hopes that Jaheira can solve the Iron Mine Crisis. Alaric is quick to announce his willingness to help and the party moves on. Ignoring a certain ranger's cries for help as the Nashkel Mine is a more pressing concern,
As they travel, they get ambushed and both Alaric and Jaheira receive nasty blows. But a little running around in circles and the ranged assualt of the party quickly fells the creatures. The Party reaches Nashkel mines and take a look inside the nearby storage house, where famished (It sounds more dramatic!) war dogs take a bite out of Jaheira (I'm surprised she isn't dead yet!). Successfully killed, Alaric heals Jaheira with his mysterious new power. The party then prepares to enter the Nashkel mines.
