Alaric - Update
Party Status:
Alaric - Fighter 1/Thief 2 (I don't max my rolls, I let the RNG happen. I play a lot of Fire Emblem, so I'm used to getting hp screwed. got 1 hp on level up. I was saddened.)
Imoen - Thief 3 (I plan on dualling her into mage next level.)
Jaheira - Fighter 2/ Druid 2
Khalid - Fighter 3
Branwen - Cleric 2
Edwin - Mage 2

Alaric and his party tried to enter the mine, but were told they needed permission from Emerson. Thinking he was still in Nashkel, the party tries to find him, but can't. So they head back to the mines and try to look around there. They come across prism and decide where's the harm in helping him. Greywolf comes along and a fight breaks out, Imoen, Montaron, and Xzar all died in a single swing (no chunking!). Khalid panics and begins to run in circles, Greywolf grew bored of chasing him and went after Jaheira. Alaric being next to her, runs as well since he is really afraid of Greywolf's killing power. After a bit of running with Kahlid not helping, Alaric takes a risk to get out of the way, and luckily greywolf only had eyes for Jaheira. This caused Khalid to go into save-my-wife mode and he kills greywolf with his composite longbow.
The party collects greywolf's reward and sells the two emeralds Prism held before raising Imoen, Montaron, and Xzar from the dead. Buying Plate armor for Khalid, the party then heads to the carnival, where they spend 500 gold to restore Branwen. Turned back to normal, the cleric joins the party and Montaron and Xzar leave at all the goodness going around. after buying equipment for the priestess of Tempus, the party runs into what looks to be a mage.
He calls himself Edwind and seeks aid in killing a witch. Alaric agrees as his party needs a new mage, much to everyone's protests.
At the gnoll stronghold. the bridge guards are easily killed by Alaric and Khalid (much to my surprise!). After a little exploring along the cliffside, Alaric obtains a mysterious tome and gauntlets that none in Nashkel can identify. Moving onwards, the party fights the gnolls, losing all their ammunition to killing them, but there was still more to kill. So it became an all out melee, with Alaric breaking his two-handed sword in order to kill one of the gnolls. He then goes into stealth and instantly slays a gnoll with a shortsword (no PIPs in it either!) before switching to his bastard sword and running like Khalid from the ten gnolls hot on his heel. The party then switches to a lure and kill off strategy, with Alaric chugging an oil of speed to succeed. The gnolls are soon killed and Alaric confronts Dynaheir. Her death comes quickly as Alaric kills her easily. Edwind then gives an entire year of his services to the party.
Alaric then takes his party into the mines after they recover at the inn. Quickly going through the first two levels of the mines (they found Emerson just outside the mines, much to their annoyance.) the party is on the third level and clear out the mines easily. They then stop to prepare to face the kobolds on the bridge of DOOM! (I hate this part of the mines, it's a death trap!)
Will Alaric live through this encounter?

Just a few quick notes:
- As far as I have experienced, Temples can identify anything - take your tome to them and they will identify it for you fro 100 gold.
- The "Bridge of DOOM" is much easier if you have the necklace of missiles - firing a fireball at the kobolds handles it quite nicely. If you have to charge the kobold commandos, you get best results with the tank using his best armor and large shield, then after he/she gets their attention, the rest of the party can assist.
- Greywolf a dangerous encounter, glad you got through it. Hold persons/blind/command seems to be the most effective spells against him.

Yeah, I laughed at Xzar's instant death, but I began to panic as soon as Greywolf mopped the dirt with Imoen and I started to run like a REALLY scared Khalid.
Thanks for the temple tip. Found that out myself actually!
The bridge of doom was defeated, but not before Edwin took a two arrows to the knee (Kobolds are short!) and died instantly. No chunking, can arrows even do that? I was wondering how Edwin got up front like that anyways.
Alaric and team easily killed the Priest at the end and left Xan in his,,,,cave?
The assassin in front of the inn named Nimbul almost killed me thanks to fear, but I lived with a remove fear spell. Alaric quickly dropped him and moved on.
Kicking out Jaheira and Khalid (he's annoying!) Alaric adds in Kiven and Ajantis.
Ajantis is then removed for Viconia (I figured my fighter/thief and Kiven can handle melee combat should we have to.)
Imoen also reached level 4 and dualled over into an illusionist. And now I go on to complete some sidequests before I face off with Tazok.
Party status:
Alaric Fighter/Thief 2/3
Imoen Thief -> illusionist 4/1
Edwin Mage 3
Branwen Cleric 3
Kiven Ranger 4
Viconia Cleric 3

The Carnival (Armour and shields) guy only charges 50 gold but IMO one of the bard NPC is the best option.

Garrick is on the streets of Beregost and Eldoth (evil) is in Cloakwood Druids map... they both have a personal quest but you can just use them as Lore/ identify bots then kick them out.

Alaric - final update
So I went exploring in the area where you come out of the Nashkel mines when you finish.
Almost died from an ambush, almost died from an enemy party of the Iron Throne. and then a mustard jelly CHUNKS Imoen. Three shots and then she blew into pieces. I am sad that I couldn't save her life, and what kills a mustard jelly?

Hard luck ArchDragonDranovis.  Mustard jellies need magic weapons to hit.  They are also immune to piercing damage (so missile weapons are no good against them.  That makes them dangerous enemies at your level.

One option is to use summons - the wand of monster summoning is is a tomb in the area you were in and can provide a distraction while your melee specialists attack.  Another (probably better) option is to initially attack with your best AC character (say -5 or -6) so that the jellies focus on them.  The others can then join in.

The bridge of doom was defeated, but not before Edwin took a two arrows to the knee (Kobolds are short!) and died instantly. No chunking, can arrows even do that? I was wondering how Edwin got up front like that anyways.

You may have been using the AI - that will cause characters to move forward to attack when the previous target is dead and will regularly put spellcasters in the front line.  Kobold arrows can certainly chunk Edwin.  Chunking occurs when a single hit takes a character down to -10 HPs and I think a critical hit from an arrow could do 16 HP damage to someone without a helmet.

dang. That would have been too funny if it did happen. But it didn't. Instead, poor Imoen was exploded...:(

UD8 the living end;

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

I let the peons deal with my brothers remaining agents... Tip; the head Doppleganger won’t change form until he gets close enough to talk & until then has the saves/ hit-points of his human mask.

Save the pompous ones!

Posted Image  Posted Image  Posted Image

After selling all the junk  I arrived at the palace without recharging my “wand of monster summoning” (oops) but not a major problem... Tip; use a “wand of sleep” to knock out 3 of the noblemen & then fight this battle as two sets of three.

The main event:

Posted Image

Prep; I removed the main traps, killed the Battle Horror, summons skellys & placed two (scroll) ‘Skull Trap’s.

Posted Image  Posted Image

Phase 1, Puk opens the show with a  (scroll) ‘CloudKill’ to separate the boss from his peons and runs back to the door with his brother hot on his heels... Tiax and Faldorn buff the skellys with ‘Strength of One’ & ‘Defensive Harmony’ just because they can.

Phase 2, Sarevok slams into my un-dead pickets and we begin to whittle away at his health but unfortunately Semaj managed to teleport to his masters aid so everyone (not peons) changed their target & with Safanas’ “arrows of dispel” he didn’t last more than a round or two.

Phase 3, Puk uses two (scroll) ‘Greater Malison’ to shred Sarevoks’ saves which leaves him at the mercy of what would normally be only minor threats, Angelo & Tazok never found their way out of the cloud so there were no more reinforcements... Tip; Aiming at your own peons with ‘Greater Malison’ will still catch the enemy in the blast radius and avoids several types of defences because they aren’t actually being directly targeted (more useful in BG2 but still worth doing).

The final cast;

The melee 3

Shar-Teel is my party scout and has the best Thac0... as long as the tank is up then she is happiest at melee range.

Posted Image

Kaigan is my party tank.

Posted Image

Faldorn is the only party member that reaches for her spells first... as long as the tank is up then she is happy at any range.

Posted Image

The back row
Safana is my party face and back up caster... main weapon is wands and only fights at range.

Posted Image

Tiax Supplies my party with un-dead (lead by his Ghast) & spends most of his time looking for the 'scroll of world domination' that Edwin mentioned.

Posted Image

Puk spends most of the time at range with a wand of one type or another.

Awsome work, UssNorway! You're the first to win the challenge, and to prove it can be done! I bow before you.

I love all your tips for the final battle. I have trouble placing that Cloudkill correctly to pull Sarevok out alone. I'll have to study your screenies. Placing skulltraps is a trick I've never thought of. Pulling out the battle horror on the right side before the fight is a good tactic, too. Two Greater Malison and a Hold on Sarevok was pure genius.

@ArchDragon, condolences on Imoen. It would have been very interesting to see that party play out - you had such a fascinating mix of alignments going on. I've never read a post from anyone where they actually took Edwin up on his plot to assassinate Dynaheir. I wonder if Minsc reacts if you talk to him after that?

BTW - UssNorway, how do you know when to recharge your wands, since vanilla doesn't give you a charge counter?

He does - violently!

You can work out how many charges are left from the amount shopkeepers are willing to pay for wands (if you're unsure then get a quote, use a charge and get another quote).

Congratulations ussnorway. Good to see a successful outing for Tiax, Faldorn and Safana (dual classing some of the companions too) as less used NPC's.

@BelgarathMTH, the bottom right screen shows the cloud... notice that we can't see each other but bro attacks me automatic (& illegally) so, if you set the game to pause on spell cast you can start running back to the door as soon as it leaves your fingers & bro will charge ahead into whatever you have waiting for him. They can always still show up but it's normally one at a time and they are damaged.

Good luck SapphireIce101... Vanilla Thief is very hard (no traps), will you dual her?

p.s. love the Portrait.

I'm coming back into the game with a Lawful Good Half-Elf Cleric/Mage named Lerinn. She is just about to start her journey.
Stats;
Str 11
Dex 18
Con 16
Int 18
Wis 18
Cha 8

Wish me luck, Playing frail classes does up the difficulty with BG if you aren't careful IMO.

Best of luck! Sanctuary and sleep make a nice combination if you're playing solo. If in a party then make sure you stay at the back - which is much easier to do if not using the AI.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Good luck to everyone else participating.

@Ussnorway - Yes, I'm going to dual her, most likely into a conjurer or an abjurer. I also liked this picture.

Update time.

Major Battle: Karlat
Tactics: Had Kagain use a potion of Defense, and whenever he got low enough a potion of healing. Also, Imoen used her wand of Magic Missile to finish Karlat off.
Posted Image

Major Battle:  Neira
Tactics: Imoen used her wand of magic missile; Xzar used his Larloch’s Minor Drain.
Posted Image

Major Battle: Tarnesh
Tactics: Xzar used Larloch’s Minor Drain.
Posted Image

Akail: Thief - 2
Kagain: Fighter - 1
Xzar: Necromancer - 1
Montaron: Fighter/Thief - 1/1
Viconia: Cleric - 2
Shar-teel: Fighter - 2

Reloads: 0

Bonus Picture:

Xzar and Kagain talking to each other while on the hunt for the Wild Shar-teel. (bad pokemon joke, I know.)

Notes: Looked at Shar-teel and noticed that I could dual her into a thief whenever I want to, not sure if that would be a good thing though.

Also, on Akail, again I'm planning on dualing her at about level 4, possibly level 5 to a Abjurer or a Conjurer, quite possibly a cleric.

Well, Lerinn started her journey. With a full team of six, she immediately made plans to get rid of the duos and get a really whacko team together. Going for a decent fighter instead of the best, Lerinn recruits the paladin Ajantis into her party, who is disgusted that she killed a random citizen to drop the party rep down to 8. Montaron and Xzar go their own way. The party then recruits Edwin and help him kill Dynaheir (I'm doing this again, a crazy mixed party just seems like waaaay too much fun! >:D). Afterwards, the party finds themselves running away from an ogre mage ambush.
Lerinn is tired of the - coward? - known as Khalid and dumps him for Kiven. Jaheira leaves with her husband. Kivan is only a stand-in until the party can get Coran so Imoen can dual into a mage. The party of five then immediately goes and recruits Viconia dropping them down to 6 making Ajantis and Kivan very suspicious of their party leader.
Talking to Oublek the bounty officer, Lerinn announces she isn't Greywolf and gets a reputation point, keeping Ajantis and Kivan a little more accepting, with Imoen being mad at all the disapproval.
As for the assassins, the first was slain easily but Montaron had to be revived from an instant kill from magic missile. The second was crushed by a successful Comand spell dropping her to the floor and letting everyone potshot her to death.
The party was heading to the mines, but an army of bandits had them fleeing with no casualties. But more problems arose as the undead ambushed the party as well, causing more retreats. Lerinn is really having bad luck these days. While helping Edwin earlier, Jaheira was slain instantly by Ursa the cave bear, but it was nothing a revive dead couldn't fix at a temple.
The party is now ready to head into the mines of Nashkel.

EDIT: Forgot to add party status.
Lerinn Cleric/mage Level 1/1
Ajantis Paladin Level 2
Kivan Ranger Level 2
Viconia Cleric Level 2
Imoen Theif Level 2
Edwin Mage Level 2
Those closet to leveling up would be Edwin, Imoen, and Lerinn

Gratz on your progress, and nice screenshots, Sapphire.

Viconia's vanilla, unaltered portrait certainly is ... odd. My reaction was, '*That's* Viconia? *That's* a dark elf? No wonder Viconia's fans like to change that portrait.

It looks like Xzar's line for his banter with Viconia got accidentally copy/pasted into his banter script with Kagain. I think you've uncovered a rarely seen, little-known bug there. Whatever he was supposed to say to Kagain is probably lost. I wondered why he would call Kagain 'harlot', because it didn't seem quite right for the character - cross-gender teasing would be anachronistic to the setting. Unless it was supposed to tie into the famous gender-bender belt - I've heard there are some dialogues that come up if you leave it on.
