By which you're referring to pre-orders, which are never the best way to gauge the merits of a game, as it is simply riding on the waves of a prior success. It's like saying that because Star Wars: Episode One had so many Star Wars fans rushing to see it that it was a great movie, and not that it was simply because they were riding on the original trilogy's success.

Wrong.

..Yeah, you're definitely a waste of effort in regards to speaking to using ideas such as logic and sense. So instead I will attempt to communicate to you using your own rationale:

Banana. Francesca. Loola-woola. Wibble.

You're pissed at EW for saying something true? Seriously?

Damn, no wonder y'all keep ranting about how BioWare lied to you.

It's clever and it's true, whether like it or not.

EA is a business not your dear old granny, brother, sister, mother, father, friend or faithful little puppy.

The way it is presented is a lie of omission.

It is not a lie in ANY way. It claims that no game has created the fan reaction that ME3 has. That is a statement of truth, whether you like it or not. BioWare is going to make money off your hissyfit.

Good for BioWare.

From a certain point of view, sure its totally accurate.

Its the image they have created for the uninitiated. For someone seeing that with fresh eyes, not knowing why there is such a reaction - it could convince them to buy the game only to find out that the fan reaction was not of the 'good' type.

Its like something totally unhealther advertising as "Independantly tested by Health Watch!" Even if they deemed the product unhealthy - the statement is still correct.

The biggest problem with this is that it means that Bioware have learned NOTHING from the storm surrounding the ending. Clearly they're trying to give the impression that it's generated a positive reaction even though the article is clear in it being negative.

I'm frankly curious as to the legality of what they've done here as well - yes it's a direct quote, but it's taken out of context to imply a meaning completely inverted to the original intent, indicating that the 'advert' is deliberately designed to deceive customers.

Yes, they took two true statements and proceeded to mislead potential customers. An unaware person would conclude the fan reaction was positive when clearily every mainstream news article pointed to negative fan reaction over the ending.

Ooh, I wonder why they'd risk this.

Even in the consumer rights hellhole that the US is, this kind of thing is cracked on by the BBB.

This…yeah, this I'd report as misleading advertising.

(Edit: If this is just ‘internal’ marketing, i.e. to game owners, then it was probably intended as humour. But in that case, they have seriously misestimated the public mood. You can make jokes about things that you were wrong about only after you've admitted being wrong.)

It's not EW that's trolling. It's Electronic Arts' marketing department, that thought sending this lovely lying piece of crap out to Bioware's Mass Effect customers was a good idea.

Why these marketing people still have jobs is the real question.

Lies of omission are FUN.

But according to some of the idiots in here, you didn't lie.

If you are in the US or Canada, especially, I recommend contacting the BBB, advertising bureau, consumer ombudsman…

Deceptive advertising is deceptive advertising is deceptive advertising. I love it how some of our regulars show their complete lack of integrity trying to defend this move.

You know what increases my respect for your argument? Showing that you can handle it in some manner resembling objectivity.

This.

It blows my mind seeing customers defending the company lying to them and stonewalling them with PR talk, neglecting their consumer rights in the process, because they have some twisted notion of owing anything to the company that received their money in the first place.

You couldn't be more brainwashed if you tried.

No offense, but the FTC is meant for illegal advertising, the BBB is just an oversight committee that is a good-will type program and isn't governmental. You should be reporting it to the FTC, not the BBB.

It's the manner in which the fact is presented, intended to dupe the uninformed.
