Playing my favored Salarian Engineer, and decided to try out a Disruptor Ammo Tech Burst that I've heard so much about. I found it very difficult to set it up with my Shield Drain, though. Is there a trick to the timing, or the level of the Disruptor Ammo?

Level matters, IIRC you need to trigger a stun with the disruptor ammo on a target that is hit with your energy drain, or hit them with energy drain when they are staggered from the ammo.
High rate of fire weapons help too, as they give you more chances to trigger a stun. Try a typhoon, locust or avenger.

I've never done it, but I think I remember reading that the better way is to use the gun first, then ED when they are stunned from the ammo.

Even the Geth Plasma SMG didn't stun often enough for me. I used level 1 ammo at the time.
