OK, so I still can't bear to play ME at all. (See, I'm on topic!)

I've been playing Portal a bit but I really miss my RPGs. Anyone have any suggestions for non-Bioware RPGs for PC (or Mac)? My only requirements are: a female protagonist (no Witcher for me, I'll play it modded if I get desperate), decent story and decent characters.

Anyone? I've only recently got back into gaming after a very long hiatus, so chances are I won't have played anything you can think of.

I'm going to reload Witcher 1 and 2 and play them again. They are both great games. Geralt is badassness!

I couldn't play any game for weeks after I finished it. I just re-read Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy for the billionth time. If anything, I'd just say The Witcher. It's the only RPG I can think of that I can compare to ME.

Play Dragon Age Origins: Gather all races of the Land to fight an powerful ancient force. Where have I heard that line before?

I am currently playing it, remembering why I loved morrigan and alistar. Best thing it ends how I want it to.

If you want a good game to play, there's this one I remember playing back in the day. It was this epic science-fiction trilogy that was perfect and had a great story and character development and fantastic action and everything, it was called Mass Eff---oh wait.

Also, fellow Australian ftw.

I've been playing Dark Souls, which is quite good. PvP is junk but the rest of the game is sound.

I tried starting a new game to help get over ME3 depression, but it didn't work. Now I don't feel like playing anything Bioware anyway.

 Skyrim

But actually, I have the same question, as you do (only, I'm on the Xbox and cannot physically play computer games nowadays)

so thanks for asking, for me too, rivqa! :)

(I prefer 3d person games, but then it's not many, when I do a google search for RPG female characters)

Knights Of The Old Republic obviously. Made by Bioware back in the good old days, customizable hero and some really good RPG. Get to choose every line of Dialog and such. Great characters and NPC cast. Epic and twisting story line.

KOTOR and KOTOR II: The Sith Lords are some of the best games out there. with great writing.

Skyrim or Kingdoms of Amalur perhaps. Neither have great stories, but they're good.

But yeah it ain't fun looking for RPGs with female character options is it? When so many of them don't have that option for no reason.

heard witcher is awesome

if you want action RPG somewhat like fable 1 on crack KoA Reckoning is great (EA published though but its a great game)

i missed out on Deus ex HR and picked that up a couple of days ago great game (boss fights seem out of place because they were outsourced, i beat them on the hardest level with the wrong augments died a lot,,,,a lot but those are small gripes with an awesome game)

female protagonist will be hard to find though

if you never played Saints Row 2 its a great game with a story that can be hilarious dramatic or sad it has great writing and is tons of fun..

SR2 and KoA you can create female characters

I loved that one  and also Dreamfall, on the Xbox (not the computer version) although, it was somewhat disappointing, too short etc.

Speaking of females, and adventures. If you are interested, rivqa, you can check out Syberia (I really, really loved that one - I don't know how I had forgotten that, but anyway, it's an adventure game so it's not RPG)

I also recommend the Witcher Series. Part one is still quite good even now, and Part 2 is about to get an enhanced edition next week (upgrade for free to anyone already owning a copy)

Also Skyrim is, of course, a wodnerful game, though it lacks what makes (made?)  Bioware so strong: good story, good characters...

Edit: But of course I just realize that these games are exactly NOT what the OP is looking for...silly me...

I've played Kingdoms of Amalur for a while, but it has it's flaws. I've been wanting to ask the same question myself, so I wrote down what I want in a game. Turns out I want a BioWare game that's not made by BioWare. It limits my choices somewhat.

I'm reinstalling DAO at the moment.

I hate the combat system, so I figure I'm just gonna turn the difficulty down to easy and enjoy myself. Plus I'll get the chance to play through all that DLC I skipped. Might even get Awakening... but we'll see how well DAO goes first.

Closest thing to that I'd think would be an Obsidian game.
So I checked what they're working right now and it's..... a South Park game? They're wasting their time on a South Park game!?

Yes, that's what I want, plus a female protagonist. Doesn't make it easy.

That could be handy, and Syberia looks pretty cool. Thanks!

honestly OP if you haven't played Fable: The lost Chapters you should, male lead in the first i think though, female possibility in the other 2.

the game has great atmosphere, style story is good and imo it is superior to it's sequels

Ahaha Fable.

Peter Molyneux: "You can make your character anything you want it to be!"

Me: "Anything?"

Peter Molyneux: "Anything."

Me: "Can I make a girl?"

Peter Molyneux: *trollface*

I started playing Fallout: New Vegas in October to give me something to do pre-Skyrim and pre-ME3.  But now that I've invested 80 hours into Skyrim and have completed ME3, I'm giving NV another go.
