People always go on about the Witcher.
Personally I'll never play the Witcher due to not being able to be a female protagonist, the set protagonist being someone I can't stand at all and it's general attitude towards women.

Yes yes I'm sure it's the best 2 games evar but meh. AlsoSapkowskiisahack. *exit stage left*

****SOME MILD WITCHER SPOILERS HERE****

I can understand this. The first game in particular is a real standard bearer for sexism in games. The second one is better in this regard (no sex cards, for one) but it's still very much in your face about it being a man's world. You can make Geralt a loyal lover if you like but the game doesn't really do anything to encourage this, other than forcing a primary relationship on you in 2.

It's too bad in your case because the game is really good otherwise for RPG fans, IMO. (although the ambitious storytelling in 2 was a bit beyond what the developers were capable of, I though. I do give them credit for trying.) This is a real issue for female gamers and more developers need to address it. As an African-American gamer, I can appreciate what it's like to have my demographic grossly stereotyped and have protagonists that don't look like you forced upon you but games don't ever really actively actagonise me as a black gamer the way they frequently do women (by design or otherwise), so you have my sympathies.

Yeah, in the first the Witcher (I bought it recently but I heard about the cards before) I really had an 'WTF?' feeling when I noticed the 'sex cards'. Those cards alone already deserve the game an 16+/18+/M+ rating, LOL...

Besides, there simply aren't enough titles out there with female protagonists. One reason I'm looking forward to the new Tomb Raider.

I've never been interested in Tomb Raider, partly because I'm crap at those sort of games and partly because Lara was so obviously designed to appeal to men.
That any different nowadays?

I can't wait for the new Tomb Raider. I've been hooked since the E3 demo. It looks and sounds amazing. Went out and bought a couple of the old games, to get ready.

I have to say I don't get why you and a couple of other female gamers hate the old Lara so much, especially given your stated strong preference for female antagonists. When you say she's "designed to appeal to men", what does that mean, really? Because, I have to say, as a man, that always sounds like "I don't like that she's sexy", which sounds distasteful. So, please, if you don't mind, what is the problem with Lara Croft? Respectfully.

Also, apart from FemShep, are there any female primary protagonists you do like?

I saw a mod for the first Witcher that allowed you to play as a dark elf -- the creator made it for an African-American female friend who didn't want to play it because the character didn't represent her. But if it doesn't really change underlying sexism in the story it doesn't solve the problem for me.

Fallout 3. An older game at this point, but you can get the GotY edition fairly cheap now. Especially if you're looking for something more in the sci-fi vein than in the fantasy vein. And yes, you can have a female protagonist. :)

Oh, and Mirror's Edge.

It has a few issues and it's not and RPG, but it's great.

One of my favorite female protagonists, an awesome world, and it's one of the most beautiful big-ticket games in recent memory.

Plus, you can get it for about $4 now.

If it weren't for the female protagonist thing, I'd recommend Alpha Protocol. I'd recommend that to any fan of Mass Effect (especially the first one) who doesn't mind a modern day spy story instead of SciFi. Great RPG, great story, great choice and consequence system.

Eh, The Witcher's really not that great imo. Bought the first Witcher game, played for about two hours and was just extremely bored. The first sex scene is hilariously out of place. Not gonna touch that game again unless I have absolutely nothing better to do.

Great, great, GREAT GAME! And ancient now, so it's dirt cheap and anybody's pc should be able to run it.

If you're interested in gaming with a good story -- which I assume most ME players are -- do yourself a favor and get this one.

Have to agree on this one. Great game, and fits the female protagonist requirement. Been some time I played this game. The ingame music is great, so is the whole game setting and the character development.

yup changed for the better

out now

coming soon

First link was average, not really into that birds eye view arcade style.

Second link... wow.

I saw the E3 trailer a couple of months ago, but always wondered how much different the gameplay would look as those cinematic trailers are always so much better. I'm impressed.

Also, skyrim, fallout 3 and fallout New Vegas are good for female protagonists, you can have some fun in both fallouts with the black widow perk, some uncommon NPC's still refer to you as sir, but so did Jacob at the end of ME3 Image IPB

Edit: Personally I found the storys in Skyrim to be the best, mainly because there are so many stories, it is a huge game, I played 300+ hours on my first playthrough.

Main issue: it's EA. ;)

I've put it on my wishlist on Steam but I'm not buying anything EA until the EC DLC comes out.

Also, Lara Croft and feminism: http://www.gamestudi...g/0202/kennedy/

IIRC Drakensang: The Dark Eye gave you the possibility to play as a female. The writing and characters here wasn't as well-done as Bioware's games, alas, but it kept me entertained for a while.

Mainly the fact that they flat out admitted they gave her big breasts to appeal to men and other things like "look at her glistening body as she exits the water!!" features.
That said I don't know that much about her character as I've never actually played any TR game (again also due to me being more of an RPG gamer in general) so I could be mistaken on some things.

Also, apart from FemShep, are there any female primary protagonists you do like?

If you mean set or voiced characters..

Samus Aran (Metroid.... Metroid: Other M does not exist), Shion Uzuki (Xenosaga), FemBoss (Saints Row 2/3), LadyHawke (DAII), Chris Lightfellow (Suikoden III), Lightning (FF13 - hate the game but like her).

Actually, yeah. I was never interested in the old Lara for basically the same reason but New Lara SEEMS to be much more realistic. We haven't heard a heck of a lot of dialog from her so I've no idea if her physical shift is applicable to her character but so far it looks promising.

It's the difference between this:

Like I said, promising.

I actually don't mind Lara, or sexy characters in general...actually I prefer my characters to be sexy. The problem I have in some games is where they're only sexy, in a trashy way, not really characters so much as controllable blow-up dolls. But I never got that feeling from Lara...I always saw her basically as Indiana Jones, but female.

That said, the reboot of it looks a lot better even so.

OP, you and I in the same boat. I can't play game with male protagonist too (if it's not shooter with dead girl like FEAR or shooter with demons like DOOM :D).
I tried Witcher, but just couldn't finish it, though I admit it's great game. It's a shame that some game called themselves RPG and didn't allow player to chose gender.
Remember Two World 1? Before the first patch there were no females there. Yes, there were no females in the whole big game world. I still feel sick. =]

Anyway, my list:
Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur, Fallout New Vegas
Good games, but there are no squadmates therefore no friendship/romance and character driven emotions.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. You should try this game. Great story, great characters... and old graphics, so sometimes I feel sick :) But still good, especially with last fan patches.
Jade Empire. Good old game. I sometimes forgot it's bioware game.)... Hm, I should replay it too.
Drakensang: The dark Eye; Drakensang: The River of Time. It's german RPG (based on popular P&P). Interesting story, great characters. I replayed it 5-6 times.
Spellforce 1 and addons, Spellforce 2 and addons. Basically it's RTS. Plot is pretty linear but still entertaining,  there are many side quests and you can meet great characters during your journey. And Spellforce 2 has dragons.

Divinity II: Ego Draconis.
It's hack'slash RPG. Not much character interections, story is... forgettable... (though Ego Draconis has really EPIC detective story). But you can turn into dragon and FLY! Yes! It's an epic feeling, trust me. I play it only to do dragon and put the goblins on fire. :D
And don't play Divinity II without Ego Draconis. It has... ME3 ending. But fans started to whine and developers made an expansion. B) Artistic.

Oh, I just have to through in my 2 cents here, because I am a 46 (47) y/o woman who absolutely LOVE Lara!! Together with my siblings and their children (I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers, so we are many women who love Lara)

But, unfortunately, I am so lousy at the gameplay , learning the control, so I never played it on my Xbox (the newer ones. I played all of the 1-6, a million times, on PlayStation 1 and on my Mac, back in the days.

I will try my best, because i feel I just have to give Lara another try. (it's jut me, being crappy at handling the controller - I got too frustrated. LOL)
...but that's just my humble opinion (oh, and my siblings', and nephews/nieces')

(edit: The only one, I only played through one time, was the first one - because I couldn't shoot the poor innocent animals... Obviously, I could shoot people, w/o hesitation though) :o
