Aw, Drakensang doesn't seem to be available in Australia... or not via Steam anyway. Might need to ask some o/s relatives to hunt it down for me.

And look another game that fixed its ending! Wonders never cease.

They are not long, they are slow. I just edit run/walk speed and problem is solved.
I notice pretty every german RPG is slow. Spellforce is german. I can't forget those long journeys from one side of the map to the portal.

Oh! I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier. It's not an RPG, and you may have trouble finding it on PC, but...Beyond Good & Evil! I loved that game on Xbox, and recently got the HD version on the 360 arcade.

Also Knights of the Old Republic 2 (Obsidian made that one - lots of content is missing thanks to Lucasarts, but it was pretty much all restored via fan patches). Neverwinter Nights 2 is a classic, too (also Obsidian - Bioware did the first of both series, Obsidian did the sequels).

I'm going to reload Witcher 1 and 2 and play them again. They are both great games. Geralt is badassness!

Oh wait, are those that games that have consitant story telling? And an extremely dedicated and loving development team that wasn't pushed into insane deadlines by maganement-mobsters? Who gave free (major overhaul) patches for their games based on constructive fan reaction? Games that got great review scores without bribing reviewers using advertising?

Are they available for PS3 too? I might want to pick them up!

More on topic:
I just reinstalled Baldurs Gate 1 and 2. But I found out Kotor 2 has finally been restored by the fan comminity too. I might try that out as well, finally experiencing what Avellone intended from the start.

An older game which is really awesome is Arcanum, it's available on GoG.com along with all the older Bioware games.

My pleasure. ^_^ That game gave me some of my best gaming memories of its generation. Fair warning though - rumors about BGE2 releasing soon have been around forever, and while it's still supposedly coming, don't get your hopes up for it any time soon. <_<

If you're interested in point and clicks adventure games. Some of the best are definitely the monkey island series. Loved all of them. Even the tales of monkey island episode series. I think the curse of monkey island (part 3) sticked with me the most.

Other great point and click adventure games are the runaway games; A road adventure and dream of the turtle.

And ofcourse the broken sword series mentioned earlier in the thread. Seemed like I played those games in a previous life or something. Has been ages, and I still was a young teenager back then. Back then you could still be stuck on certain parts in the game for days or even weeks. Like the first tomb raider games. Figuring out how to open a hatch or something. Or if a certain jump is possible. Back then it was great. I'm not sure those games would do well anno 2012. The graphics are confusing in the earlier tomb raider games. Making jumping ledges hard. But back then it was all part of the game. That was tomb raider.

But looking back..nothing really compares well to the mass effect series. Well, the first 2.9 games then.

You're going to fall short if you're deadset on finding something with a female protagonist akin to Femshep. There's a reason she's held in such high regard when it comes to well established female heroines (Hint:
barely any).
Just try and accept men as a medium to 'play through', you'll be happier off for it. 'specially since the industry still has a long way to go before it does more than treat women as emphasized curves and/or suffering from 'damsel in distress' syndrom.

To toss some titles out there, mostly sticking to PC and not limiting myself to just RPGs (trying something else now and then never hurts);

The Witcher series; though it can be an aquired taste, especially the first one.
Deus Ex: Human Revolutions; for if you're into conspiracies and playing Bond.
Frozen Synapse; tactical chess, in so many words.
Tribes Ascend; best PC shooter on the market as of current (no I don't care what you say).
Orcs must Die; kind of.. self explantory, no? It really is quite fun. Tower defense-esque.
Trine (1&2); Amazingly cute fairy tale wrapped in an inovative platformer.
Batman: Arkham Asylum/City; Excellent Brawlers, and you're playing as the flipping Batman (Voice talent including Kevin Conroy/Mark Hammil). Asylum has the better story and feel, but City is by no means bad.
Darksiders; Hack and Slash, puzzling elements and generally quite flashy. Its underrated, in my opinion.
Saints Row: The Third; Offensive, hilarious and incredibly over the top.
Starcraft 2; one of the better dune clo- RTS's out there right now, sure you've heard of it. Give Dawn of War 2 a whirl if you want a slightly different take on the old system.
Magicka; get some friends for the storymode, alcohol if you feel like it, and just enjoy.
Back to the Future; Episodes one through five. Point and click, nothing amazing, but it had the original cast and was fairly fun.
Assassin's Creed; Suppose they deserve a mention, DRM ****tery aside. Get part 2, maybe Revelations for the Multiplayer. The storyis cheesy as all hell, but its strangely enjoyable to hop across rooftops as Ezïo.

Which kind of wraps it up as far as my reccomendations go. You've allready mentioned you were playing Portal,
guessing you're probably familiar with Team Fortress 2 or the Half Life episodes. The Elder Scrolls (Skyrim) and Fallout have allready been mentioned aplenty, so I won't bother. I'd also reccomend poking GOG.com if you're feeling nostalgic, they've one of the biggest classic games collections going at the moment.
Poke the names, maybe look up some gameplay vids on the youtubes, m'sure you know the drill.

Oh, and yea. Forgot one title.

Bastion.

Get it. You'll thank me later.

EDIT: Formating went haywire there.

Besides, there simply aren't enough titles out there with female protagonists. One reason I'm looking forward to the new Tomb Raider.

I've never been interested in Tomb Raider, partly because I'm crap at those sort of games and partly because Lara was so obviously designed to appeal to men.
That any different nowadays?

I can't wait for the new Tomb Raider. I've been hooked since the E3 demo. It looks and sounds amazing. Went out and bought a couple of the old games, to get ready.

I have to say I don't get why you and a couple of other female gamers hate the old Lara so much, especially given your stated strong preference for female antagonists. When you say she's "designed to appeal to men", what does that mean, really? Because, I have to say, as a man, that always sounds like "I don't like that she's sexy", which sounds distasteful. So, please, if you don't mind, what is the problem with Lara Croft? Respectfully.

Also, apart from FemShep, are there any female primary protagonists you do like?

Mainly the fact that they flat out admitted they gave her big breasts to appeal to men and other things like "look at her glistening body as she exits the water!!" features.
That said I don't know that much about her character as I've never actually played any TR game (again also due to me being more of an RPG gamer in general) so I could be mistaken on some things.

Also, apart from FemShep, are there any female primary protagonists you do like?

If you mean set or voiced characters..

Samus Aran (Metroid.... Metroid: Other M does not exist), Shion Uzuki (Xenosaga), FemBoss (Saints Row 2/3), LadyHawke (DAII), Chris Lightfellow (Suikoden III), Lightning (FF13 - hate the game but like her).

I meant only female primary player characters. Thanks. I'm actually not a Tomb Raider guy, as far as the old games. It's the franchise reboot, coming later this year, that looks great to me. So I'm not defending the Lara character, just trying to understand all the scorn. Lara Croft was a female protagonist back when they were much more rare than they even are now, so I was surprised when I discovered how little regard some women gamers have for her. Just trying to understand better.

Thanks for the straight answers.

edited to eliminate extraneous line.

Agreed, pretty much. I'd also recommend Saint's Row 2 in addition to the third.
Edit: Sins of a Solar Empire has an expansion coming up, and it's also a very interesting take on the RTS genre. Gameplay is a bit long-winded, but its very unique.

And I cannot help you emphasize Bastion enough. Best goddamn combination of story, narration, music, visuals, etc. Aesthetically, it's nearly perfect.

Thanks, I'll definitely check out some of your suggestions. I like puzzle games (am really enjoying Portal) but have never played RTSs.

It's in RPGs where I MOST want a female character, for immersion and all that. I totally get they're not all going to be of Shepard's calibre. Anyway, I've got some great suggestions to start with until the industry catches up to me... I'll buy full-price games if they meet my expectations!

Got about halfway through on the supposedly finished version on PC and haven't gone back to it since. I'm told it's a bit like Uncharted but I don't have access to a PS3, so I wouldn't know.

Nor do I to compare. It's definitely not the most polished of games, but if you go into it with the "this is an indie game" attitude, it's still pretty fun. Also...the water's very pretty. <_< ANd using it to kill your enemies is entertaining. ^_-

OK, so I still can't bear to play ME at all. (See, I'm on topic!)

I've been playing Portal a bit but I really miss my RPGs. Anyone have any suggestions for non-Bioware RPGs for PC (or Mac)? My only requirements are: a female protagonist (no Witcher for me, I'll play it modded if I get desperate), decent story and decent characters.

Anyone? I've only recently got back into gaming after a very long hiatus, so chances are I won't have played anything you can think of.

If you can bare with the necessary grinding required as in all jRPGs, I vote for Final Fantasy 6.
Decent story, decent characters, female protagonist.
Though you do need an emulator for it, GBA , SNES or PS1, depending on which one you get.

Yeah, I played it. It was alright. The shooting mechanics had problems but I loved the water mechanics. Plus the guys behind it proved they know how to accept feedback (proof)

Overall I was glad to support them when I bought it for Xbox. It can be had for cheaper on Steam now though.
