I recommend the Penumbra games over Amnesia. Same producers, same style, just a little bit older. They are more grounded in reality and the story is much more interesting imo.

Hey OP, I'm recommending this pack if you want to have some choice:

www.gamersgate.com/DDB-1CBIGPACK/1c-complete-pack-bundle

Several RPGs in there I saw; Konung, Star Wolves. King's Bounty, Farewell to Dragons. These aren't quite as deep as Bioware's, alas, but with 87 games in one pack (which now has a -70% discount!) it does feel like it gives you bang for your buck.

Didn’t read through the whole thread but has anyone mentioned Beyond Good & Evil. Not an RPG but it does have an awesome female protagonist Jade. Has one of the best blend of gaming mechanics set within a cool original world (my opinion). It’s a last gen game but they did release and HD version for XBLA and PSN. Can also be found on the PC for cheap. Hell I think I might play it. I made the mistake of playing a bleak post apocalyptic game after ME3 and that hasn‘t worked out too well. BG&E is at least colorful, charming, and fairly upbeat. Oh and fun.

The Longest Journey. Not RPG though, adventure game.

Yeah that one is great, or Dreamfall The longest Journey great adventure games

The controls get in the way for me on the sequel -- Dreamfall. But I'm on PC. I hear that is you play it on console, they're much better.

After ME3 I was also looking for a game that would pull me out of the depression ME3 put me into. I played FFXIII-2, I'm not going to say any spoilers, so all I will say is that was not a good idea.
I am playing Kingdoms of Amaleur now, and I am loving it. It is sort of a cross between Skyrim with the bright cheerful environments of Fable.
I loved Skyrim, so I recommend that one as well, I beat it before playing ME3.

OK, so I still can't bear to play ME at all. (See, I'm on topic!)

I've been playing Portal a bit but I really miss my RPGs. Anyone have any suggestions for non-Bioware RPGs for PC (or Mac)? My only requirements are: a female protagonist (no Witcher for me, I'll play it modded if I get desperate), decent story and decent characters.

Anyone? I've only recently got back into gaming after a very long hiatus, so chances are I won't have played anything you can think of.

I feel your pain.  I really do.  If you like Fantasy, Dragon Age: Origins is pretty decent.  I preferred Dragon Age II myself, but a lot of people hate it.  Baulder's Gate and Baulder's Gate II are supposed to be rereleased this summer with graphical improvements and additional story elements, so they'll be worth a go.  The new Tomb Raider isn't an RPG, but it looks *really* good, and for the first time, Lara Croft isn't sporting a DD chest and a stripperific outfit.  Kindgoms of Amalur: Reckoning is getting a lot of praise (I didn't like the demo at all, but I don't care for Fantasy much) and of course, Skyrim is the 800 Pound Gorilla of RPG's right now (haven't played it.  Again, not much of a fantasy guy).  Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords are always good fall backs.

Beyond that, I don't know.

Not really a strict RPG gamer myself - I just like a game with an immersive setting and a metric ton of freedom.

For that, I'd recommend Batman: Arkham City, simply because it lets you do so much. Replay value is huge, and like ME2, you can revisit the game post-endgame, and go exploring (as well as kicking the pants out of random goons). And you look so gosh-darn stylish in doing so, with all the stealth take-downs, gadgets, martial arts moves, etc. ...

You've already got plenty of recommendations for games, but have you ever tried...

Cooking like you live in Skyrim!

You, too, will learn the glory of grilled leeks and tomato stew with this completely unintentional diet plan from Bethesda Studios! Enjoy salted venison chops, salted salmon steaks, salted rabbit, and specially salted chicken breasts before moving on to more advanced fair such as skooma marinated chuck roasts guaranteed to put the bloodiest beef of the Reach on your table!

Disclaimer: clams and small fish must be consumed raw. Our recipes are not meant to be cooked at an alchemy table, as this can lead to dangerous results. Consult your doctor if you begin to show signs of bone break fever, the rattles, lycanthropy, or vampirism.

The Witcher 1 and 2 are definitely great and the Enhanced Edition coming out in 2 days should make the second game even better. Fallout New Vegas is also worth checking out, great game if you ask me and a great open-world RPG. Other than that.. The Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age and Star Wars KotOR are still options too.

If you are looking for a game that gives you the same story and choice driven game that BioWare did give you . . .
You're out of luck lol Image IPB

I've never came across a non-bioware game that gave me such connection to the character.
Bethesda is great about massive world to play with, the Elder Scrolls Series is awesome, but never goes too much in depth. Those games require a lot of role play on your part . . .

Skyrim is not a story driven rpg like mass effect. If you like the way mass effect gives you relationships with characters and forces you to make decisions with outcomes, dont go skyrim. Its just not the same type of rpg.

Witcher 2 ( no you dont need to play 1) is the closest thing to a bioware product out there. Its also able to break the rules because its not owned by ea. You get lots of free content that you would normally have to buy the collectors editions for. You are free of moral guardian censorship and free dlc. Go play that

Skyrim doesnt have nearly the quality voice acting that witcher 2 and mass effect share. Skyrim is driven by exploration. They toss you outside and say go find stuff to do the world is yours. There is little character interaction, there is no overarching goal. You can beat skyrim's main quest and still have 70 percent of the game untouched. Its litterally a giant world map with crap happening go and discover.

Two different types of rpg.

Witcher 2 feels very much like a bioware game especially if you play a straight male protagonist in your main file.

Elder scrolls is NOT like a bioware game at all.

You could try Venetica, it is an innovative story driven RPG. It has (or had, maybe it was patched) some technical flaws though.

Yes Beyond good and evil is a classic, great game.

Only one I can think of is Fallout: New Vegas - but being fair, I never really finished it. Not that big a fan of Bethesda gameplay (i.e. grab anything that's not nailed to the floor, do the vendor run, rinse and repeat). Story seemed good though, characters were colourful enough, and you can completely customise your character.

Why does the protagonist have to be female? I play a good game regardless of the main characters race, gender or sexual preference.

Playing awakening atm.
it FEELS great.
I did not play it back then but atm it plays great.
mute protagonist doesnt matter. still more dialogues and more choices than ME.
was knida rusty in combat since i played ME3 but i got the hook on it. Tactical pausing , assign target and boom!
