Anyway, my list:
Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur, Fallout New Vegas
Good games, but there are no squadmates therefore no friendship/romance and character driven emotions.

Fallout New Vegas... "no friendship/romance and character driven emotions".

Wha?
Veronica - Brotherhood of Steel exile, maintaining a somewhat positive outlook in the face of being on part exile from the BoS. Whilst being in lovelorn mode for her love Christine (to whom her love is forbidden by BoS hetero-centric dogma).

Arcade Gannon - Orphan of parents who died in the Navarro defending him. True they were on the wrong side, but how his "family" of "aunts and uncles" pulled together to give him a good life.

Lily - A super-mutant struggling with schizophrenia AND alzeihmers.. Haunted by the medley of memories from her pre and post mutation lives as her mind slips further from her.

There is a story for each of them.. All of them are in the same post-apocolyptic wastes as you. The game doesn't MAKE you pay attention and you still make "moral" choices, learn of the lives of these characters. You get the additional facet of personalities by them being capable of "choosing" to recognise the consequences of your choices.

I love ME for what it does in character development. Yet it remains a space opera. No matter what it is.
So if OP would like to play another game where your choices matter - FO:NV is a good choice.
Caveats though - The graphics are down a few scales and the game can be buggy. But it is worth it. IMHO.

Great rpgs, with good stories and interesting charactes AND where you can choose to play as female protagonist.

Baldur's Gate Saga

Neverwinter Nights 2 and Mask of the Betrayer's Expansion.

Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

Great non-rpg games with female protagonist:

Beyond Good and Evil

Mirror's Edge

Portal 1 & 2

OK, so I still can't bear to play ME at all. (See, I'm on topic!)

I've been playing Portal a bit but I really miss my RPGs. Anyone have any suggestions for non-Bioware RPGs for PC (or Mac)? My only requirements are: a female protagonist (no Witcher for me, I'll play it modded if I get desperate), decent story and decent characters.

Anyone? I've only recently got back into gaming after a very long hiatus, so chances are I won't have played anything you can think of.

I would recommend an older game called Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator. Main protagonist is a girl and storyline is great. You can get it on Good Old Games :)

Bioware could learn a lot from that this question is being asked all over the place. With such a sh*tty ending ruining all enjoyment of the series, people are looking for somewhere else to spend their time. No one could have ever likely made inroads to bioware's customer base without bioware dropping th ball massively, like they did here.

Consensus seems to be the Witcher series, especially 2. You're going to see traffic on these forums drop off a lot when it comes out on the 360 soon.

Get over yourself and play The Witcher anyway! It's a damn good series! Why would you withold such an amazing series just because you can't play female?

Just watch the new launch trailer of The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition. If that stuff doesn't get you exited, nothing ever will.

Indeed. Already got my Dark Edition (extremely limited edition) of The Witcher 2 pre-ordered since 2011. I can't wait 'till April 16th.

I'm already active on The Witcher forums and I'm probably going to leave BSN forever after the ME3: Extended Cut DLC content is revealed. I'm going to give that DLC a try. After that, I'm 100% done with BioWare and their games. Dragon Age sucks since DA2. Mass Effect sucks since ME3. So whatever, BioWare can f*ck off.

You could try a Dungeon Siege 3 - not the best game ever, but there are two female protagonists you can choose and it's a type of RPG that is pretty similar to BioWare's stuff. But trying to play it without a gamepad may be painfull.

Well, I can't answer for the OP, but for myself, it's because it's all but impossible for me to have any kind of connection to a male protagonist (and I get terribly tired of them being everywhere - if there were a more even distribution that part wouldn't be an issue).

So, for a game like Assassin's Creed or something, I sometimes play them, and enjoy them, but even those kinds are dampened for me if I can't play a female character - in an RPG, where connecting with the character is extremely important, it usually reduces the game from "experience the story!" to "play the combat!" for me...and I'm not super interested in playing just the combat portion of most RPGs.

Guild Wars 2.

It's not out yet, but likely will be this summer, and in the meantime, if you pre-purchase, you can participate in the beta weekends, which will start this month.

It's not a typical MMO, it does have a personal storyline, and while it's not DA1 or ME, it still looks like it'll be a lot of fun in ways that SP games won't really match. Plus, no monthly payments.

Check out the numerous press beta vids on youtube to get a feel if it might be for you.

Play Dragon Age Origins: Gather all races of the Land to fight an powerful ancient force. Where have I heard that line before?

I am currently playing it, remembering why I loved morrigan and alistar. Best thing it ends how I want it to.

i liked DA:O but got i fricking hated Alistar. I liked Morigan in that sexy/trampy dark girl, then again i romanced both girls in different playthroughs. best part of DA:O for me, the pet dog :)

That doesn't make sense. So you can't enjoy a good movie if the protagonist is a male? You can't enjoy a good book if the protagonist is a male?

So basically, you only play Tomb Raider, a few RPGs and Final Fantasy X2? Because almost every single other game has a male protagonist. You just skip them all because you can't play female? You're not really a true gamer, are you?

The Witcher 2 is much more than just an RPG. The Witcher 2 is the pinnacle of storytelling in video-games. It puts BioWare's storytelling skills to shame.

The reason why you can't play a female in The Witcher, is because you play Geralt, a character from the witcher books (the entire Witcher series is based on a best-selling Polish book). You don't get to make a character in The Witcher 2, you're Geralt, with his own background and his own personality.

But trust me, Geralt is a very deep, mature and well-developed character. You'll truly synpathize with him, even if you're a female yourself.

There are also plenty of interesting and strong female characters in The Witcher 2 that will help Geralt in his adventure. All females in The Witcher are strong and capable women who can take care of themselves. Triss and Ves are good examples of powerful women that will help Geralt a lot.

I'm currently playing Witcher in anticipation of Witcher 2, but I just can't seem to take the characters too seriously. The VA is just plain godawful. Mind you, I'm only on the second part.. and I am, admittedly, getting more interested. I think it's just the typical reaction I have when trying to get into a new story. I have confidence that I'll be really into the lore and story once I get going a bit more.

Movies and books are a bit different - that's passive consumption of entertainment, it has a different sort of connection, at least for me. Though I will say that a male protagonist still dims my enjoyment of them somewhat, it doesn't mean I don't enjoy them anyway, just that I'd enjoy them more with a female protagonist.

I do play other games, but not that many of them, no, and if being picky in my games makes me "not a true gamer" then so be it - I'd argue that I'm just as much a gamer, but the industry doesn't give me many options.

Yes, I know you play Geralt. I did get the Witcher 1 on the cheap during one of the sales, and while it wasn't bad, the setting did rub me a bit wrong and I had zero connection to Geralt - so far as I could tell, he was James Bond with a sword and potions. I didn't sympathize with him, more importantly I didn't empathize with him. I'm not saying he's a bad character, or not well-written, or any of that, I just have no desire to play as him. *shrugs* I may go ahead and pick up 2 at some point, when I can get it on the cheap as well, just to see, but...yeah, think of me what you will, RPGs that make me play male don't really appeal to me.

Geralt just lost his memory and doesn't even know who he is. The reason why he feels bland right now is because he literally is. He is literally a blank slate at this point.

But you'll discover, that once the story prorgesses, Geralt will slowly get his personality back. He'll have to make difficult moral choices (well, you as the player have to make the decisions for Geralt) and based on your decisions, Geralt might develop a different personality and philosophy. It all depends on your decisions.

And yeah, the voice-acting in The Witcher 1 was not that good. But trust me, his voice-acting in The Witcher 2 is much better.

Watch this short movie and see how much Geralt's voice-actor has improved.

Also, play The Witcher 2. Geralt will get his memory back in that game. It's really interesting character development, much more so than Mass Effect offers us with Shepard, who's basically the same character from start to finish.
