Did the romances clearly take a step back?

First of all, I'm a Liara guy... There's some things in the Shepard/Liara dialogue that just don't equate...

It feels like theres a HUGE disconnect between Shep and Liara from the very beginning of the game on Mars, even though it hasn't been that long since they saw each other... There's no (or a very negligible) embrace, there's very little to no emotion displayed by the characters which was brutal to me because I was glad to see Liara right away. it's all very "Oh hey, how's it going, good to see you." "Good to see you too, how ya been?"

On the Citadel there's a scene where you basically have to reaffirm (painfully) that your interested in more than friendship which totally demeans what the person playing thinks they've established starting the relationship in 1, not romancing anyone in 2, and continuing the relationship in LotSB... Then you're on the Presidium and she literally says "just friends", wtf is this???

Why is she in a different cabin? That's annoying, she can stay in Shepard's cabin and work in the XO-Office... There's a pretty big deal going on with these Reapers and what not, a lot of people are going to die/have died, we don't know how much time any of us have left and the 1 person that has been promoted more as LI than anyone else sleeps in a different cabin? There was such a demand for her, we got LotSB to continue our relationship and she sleeps in a different cabin? I don't even know how to fully quantify how collosal of a fail that is...

I don't know how the other romances have turned out because I beat the game the Thursday after it came out and am just now a few hours into playing it again (because I was so pissed at the god awful ending), but the poorly written Liara romance arc is taking me out of the story right away...

Yes, you get the singular events like the time capsule, the mindmeld, and the generic [insert character] sexual encounter, but those all feel like very, very isolated events that in no way count as part of a greater whole... Maybe it's just me...

Given that Jack and Miranda are barely in the game I doubt the others are much better. I know FemSheps got screwed with Jacob and Thane, though we obviously saw Thane coming apparently there wasn't much interaction with him in the half of the game leading up to that, and Jacob is apparently an ****.

Hey, I'm a Liara guy too, but we don't deserve to complain. We got it off the best.

Look at the Thanemancers.

I have no idea what they were thinking with Jacob.
Instead of redeeming the rather creepy and offputting Jacob romance in ME2 they decided that the intelligent thing to do was crash it into the side of a barn. And then set the barn on fire. And then sow the land under the resulting wreckage with salt. And then urinate on it.

Man, almost everything took a step back. Dialogue(and indirectly romances), exploration, freedom/non-linearity, character writing/motivations, theme(largely in the ending, but elsewhere as well), etc, etc, etc.

Only thing that seemed to take a step forward was gameplay, and only in certain ways(no more vehicle combat or mini-games, the shooting/cover aspects were pretty much perfected but they seem to have jsut given up on the rest).

She just didn't want to accept her feeling for your Shepard. You get to be with her and have a pretty touching moment before the final battle so that makes up for it.

I found it hilarious, I mean there werent many people who liked him to begin with, so they decided to ****** off the few fans he had! lol

did they go "hmmm, Jacob wasnt very popular in ME2... lets make him "Scumbag Jacob" and hope a meme develops!"

Garrus may be quality, but he's also not romancable starting from ME3.
So if you kill Kaidan and don't romance Garrus in ME2 it's entirely possible for FemSheps to have NO hetero options at all in ME3.

Granted, I normally wouldn't sympathise with anyone making such decisions in the first place, but still. Damn.

To a certain point, I agree with the first part, but while ME3 does progress as a shooter, the complete removal of exploration from ME1 onward(the Hammerhead missions did  suck) was not a good thing for me. The UNC's just needed less repetitiveness and less mountain crawling, but I liked them. And they were completely optional. And the continued truncation of RPG elements like the hacking minigames(which improved in ME2 but could still probably use work) and the associated skills is one of the things I've disliked about the series' direction since EA took over(Yay autodialogue). There are enough shooters out there already.

The problem is that when you tell Bioware something is wrong in ME, they don't try to fix it, they get rid of it. For example the Mako in ME1, and sadly, the Jacob romance.

Personally I can't complain, the Garrus romance was fantastic.

I think those who romanced Thane should have got a cure mission but then of course that would mess up the Leng scene[which is lame anyways, 3 people just watching while pointing guns.]

Maybe not a cure, but at least more aknowledgement of the fact that yes, Shepard loved that man and that at least part of her crew knew about it. They put the Traynor's shower scene right after Thane's death for heaven's sake. Talk about tact.

Did anyone else think the MaleShep-Kaidan scene was really well done? Kaidan's face was way more animated than normal, and the whole thing was kind of sweet.

Watched it on youtube and nope, she sits there and gets dumped by Jacob then gets basically laughed at by Brynn.

But there's always this...
