There are a lot of threads regarding wishlists for DA3, and who people want as companions, but I've not found one discussing these things in a more general way (point it out to me if there's one, I might've just missed it).

So I though the good old "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" might fit (well, maybe not the blue, but whatever... we'll get to that). I'll just give my thoughts in that order.

Something old: One (atleast) companion who is kind of a familiar face I think is a good thing. Even if it's on the level of Isabela or Merrill where maybe not everybody knew right from the start that they were both in DAO. I also firmly believe that they really need to make sure that this familiar face isn't someone who might've been killed in a previous game (Anders, I'm looking at you... I've killed you in two games now). I've seen a lot of people ask for Cullen, but I fear he's "too known" and that some will greatly dislike him (I really didn't like him in DAO, but found him ok in DA2).

Something new: We need new faces, both as main character and companions. Not only in terms of simply adding new characters, but actually characters we wouldn't expect. Too often in RPGs characters fit a certain stereotype, and it can get a bit dull (the jolly dwarf, the elf mage, etc.). DA2 started on the right path with both Fenris and Anders in my opinion, but both of those were seriously one-dimensional (maybe not lore-wise, but in terms of the gameplay) for me to ever have them in my party unless needed. So, I hope DA3 will bring in atleast one character who isn't typical for a fantasy-rpg.

Something borrowed: So, by borrowed is different from old in that they should look to what worked in previous games (not just DAO&DA2), but go as far back as Baldur's Gate. A lot of things (in terms of companions) worked, and I'm not going to list them all here. My big idea here though is that if they (Bioware) want to add a more personal touch/story to the character - do it like in Baldur's Gate did with Imoen. A friend. I quite liked the concept of family in DA2 - and to some extent it worked. What bugged me was that I (or rather, my character) had no impact on which of the siblings lived. My favorite class to play is mage, but I have no love for Carver. So for me it's the "wrong" kind of choice. And my dislike for Carver is not due to good writing (some characters I dislike for the right reasons - that is, I don't agree with them)... But Carver (like Anders and Fenris) are just boring characters (I know this is subjective, and this is my opinion). But anyway, to return to the point - a friend as a starting companion I feel would do the trick of getting you invested on a slightly more personal level. And for "balance" you could have the friend's class change depending on what class you pick for your character.

And last but not least, something blue... Uhm, I've got nothing. But hey, some Wardens wear blue. And a warden companion might work... But I'm not sure. In the past two games we've been told that the Wardens give up their lives to fight darkspawn - and to me it seems that the darkspawn have become an enemy on the sidelines, so a warden as a fulltime companion might be a bit weird (and please, I don't want another runaway-warden). I just got an idea writing this last bit... More part-time companions might actually work. Less investment, sure, but having a character that shows up and joins you from time to time (such as a warden) might be an interesting change.

Anyway, this post became way longer than I first imagined. But would like to hear your thoughts regarding companions, and how you want 'em to work in DA3 (and not too much specifics like "bring back X", there are plenty of threads for that already).

Maybe something 'blue' could be a sad companion?

Just a thought.

That'd work. It'd be nice change from jolly or brooding.

Well, I don't want any of the companions from previous games to be companions again - but I wouldn't mind a character we've seen before now becoming a character. So no, you're not the only one - albeit we might've slightly different views on what "old companion" actually is hehe

I'd like an Awakened darkspawn companion.

Actually, we already had two blue companions in DA2... Anders turned blue when Justice took over, and Fenris is blue when he activates his markings.:D I doubt either of them will return as a possible companion in DA3, because they can both be killed. Although, that hasn't stopped Bioware before... Other than that I can't remember having seen a blue creature in the world of Dragon Age. Maybe we can have a blue dragon?:P

"Old" - I think the "old" would probably be a companion from either DA:O or DA2 that was non-romanceable. It would cause problems if a previously LI came back because they'd either a.) Be non-romanceable this time round and people would complain or b.) Be romanceable and people would complain because they were supposed to be in a relationship with the Warden/Hawke. Unless of course you mean "old" as in an ancient god companion or something?

"New" - Would be completely new companions for us to get to know.

"Borrowed" - I Dunno, maybe a previous NPC from one of the games would become a companion. Personally I'm hoping for Cullen, but that's just me.

"Blue" - I have no idea. An Asari? Lol. I suppose blue would just count as your wild card, like a fade spirit or something unexpected?

Something Old

Stroud
: Stroud is a Grey Warden (which gives him a connection to DAO even though he's a minor DA2 character), has an Orlesian accent, doesn't seem to be guilty of any negative French stereotypes and could give us some insight into what the Wardens were up to during DA2.

Cassandra: She could give us the Seeker perspective after all of the bad events of DA2.  Also, given the way her mission in DA2 turned out, she no doubt has unfinished business.  Leliana could play a similar role, but since Cassandra is less of a known quantity, the writers might be able to do more with her.

(I've wondered if the concept art we've seen on character customization are Stroud and Cassandra.)

Something New

I'd like to see the companions actively disagree with or debate me more.  It can be intense, or it can be polite.  But rather than always being the counselor to this party of damaged goods, it would be interesting to be challenged sometimes.  Bioware has already done this a little--so it's not entirely new.  (But not many things are new.)

Something Borrowed

Haer'Dalis: Haer'Dalis was a bard and a love interest from Baldur's Gate II.  He could serve as inspiration for a new LI as Anomen was for Alistar (or as perhaps Soulafein was for Fenris--though I've never  seen Bioware comment on that).  A male bard LI could always be hiding something (kind of like Morrigan).  And as Alistair gave the Warden a rose, a bard could the PC a song.  Similar speaking he could give insight into the Orlesian bards and spies that Leliana spoke of in DAO.

Something Blue

Bleu de France.  I hope that Bioware gives Orlais distinctive architecture, clothing and armor.  There's a lot in France draw upon for landscape and architecture (Versailles for palaces, Loire Valley for landscapes, Annecy for towns, more), and there are chevaliers to work with for armor and weaponry.

Old:
Return to more player agency and customization.

New:
Maps.  Lots of them.

Borrowed:
Buffy as vampire and demon slaying companion (may as well put the rogue ninja moves to good use) and/or Willow as a mage.

Blue
Bleu cheesewheels in Orlais!

My suggestion for something blue would be a "sad drunk" type character. Something like a disgraced Templar or exiled Tevinter Magister. Basically, they're pretty functional people while sober, but when they get drunk, they tend to become morose and contemplative about their troubles. Think of it as a counter point to the fun and funny drinkers like Ogrhen or Isabela.

Blue is clearly Anders or Fenris.

Or, since Wynne glowed blue, anyone serving as a spirit bottle.

It is good to have a Dragon Age 3 post, so that has nothing to do with someone's hatred of Dragon Age 2.
Something old: Charade Amell or Varric(I would say Cassandra Tallis, or Morrigan, but I am pretty sure they are going to be in the game.
Something new: Friends of Red Jenny companion
Something borrowed: "Bioware has a contest and the top five get their names borrowed into the game. (You will be a pc. you might be a drunk. You might be a blood mage. You might be working at the **** house One lucky will have the same name as a companion)
Something blue: You know a companion that you recruit be saving them from a suicide attempt or not recruit by letting them jump.

Old: Cassandra.
New: Dwarven sex gods.
Borrowed: Something similar to TW1's drinking scenes with Dandelion and Zoltan.
Blue: The general atmosphere throughout Orlais now that it's falling apart.

Old: Cassandra/Cullen
New: Female Kossith Tal-Vashoth/dwarf from Kal-Sharok
Borrowed: What about "borrowed" from other Dragon Age media?
Blue: I'm thinking something unique, like a Desire Demon companion.

I'm still not getting what it is about Cassandra and Cullen that makes people want them as companions. Aren't they more suitable as important non-companion plot-characters? Not trying to flame, just curious why some really seem to want them in their party.

As for Dwarven sex gods... Hells yes! More dwarves is never a bad thing. Although I suppose the term would be "Dwarven paragon of humping"?
