Once you learn where the spawn points are and how to manipulate them to your advantage--and of course how to tear down enemies rapidly--other maps and enemies are only marginally more difficult than FBW/Geth (though they're certainly more fun). I'm not bragging about my skills, because I have none; I'm painfully mediocre at any kind of shooter. I just figured out how the game works, and once you do that you find it's not nearly as difficult as people make it out to be.

No, that part I get.

It's the part about doing this, without communication, with random people that makes it harder to believe. I'm not going to tell you that it's impossible without communication or that, Hell, it would be impossible for you to carry a team of three idiots if you had to- we've all seen the solo Gold videos. I'm just saying it would certainly be EASIER with communication. It simply smooths things out.

I usually turn it on on gold if other people have theirs on. if they don't I'll turn mine off and listen to some music. I do that sometimes anyway though, not that much need for communication if you have a semi decent team.

I am sick of starting SIlver/Gold games and people with their mic's turned off join them. No way are we ever going to complete a gold/silver game without communication, turn it on, there is no excuse.

I complete all my random Silver matches without a mic. I've completed a handful of Gold matches with randoms micless as well-- though I usually don't play Gold with randoms. My excuse varies between "I don't want any human contact right now" and "It's late and I can't wake the other people in the building".

Stop speaking in absolutes. It's fully possible both to win without verbal communication and to have an excuse for not wanting to talk to you.

Some people are kids or have a shy/weird voice that don't want to get yelled at. They might be good players, but people go HAM about things like that. Plus, Mass Effect doesn't want to pick up my mic for some reason.

Mass Effect is a mainstream single player game. It's likely that the majority of people who play multiplayer have never played multiplayer before, and never needed a mic, and indeed don't have one. I don't. I don't want to have one. You can get by just fine on common sense and if people are lacking common sense, a mic won't help.

OP, that sounds very one-sided. There are many ways to play. If you need a mic and everyone on your team needs a mic, well good for you. I've been in many gold matches where nobody had a mic and we did just fine. Sounds like a personal preference to me. If you sound anything like your post when talking on a mic, I would probably leave at the lobby. Just remember that everyone has their own playing style. Without a mic, you rely on intuition... That's a whole other skill you can grow.

@OP

If you tell me how to make my CM Storm Sirus Mic work, then it will be always on. Always learn me how to make my voice clear, and not full of noise.

Do that and my mic will always be available to you.

/sarcasm off.

I'll tell you outright that it would be impossible for me to carry three idiots--I'm just not that good. But I have much better luck finding good teams on Gold than I do on Silver. Anyone with a nonsensical loadout and/or underleveled character gets kicked, and the folks I get into games with almost always know what they're doing. On the whole I find it a much less frustrating experience than Silver.

I've had my share of horrible experiences playing with randoms, but I expect it. Price I pay for not making friends. :P

People that would kick you out of a silver game because you don't have a mic (or would rather not plug one in) are people you don't want to team with, anyway. They're the people that 9 times out of 10 couldn't play to save their lives, so they need SOMETHING to blame other than their own shortcomings. "Oh, we didn't have any communication, that's why we lost!"

99% of the games I've played in were people that never talked, and we win 80% of those. Why? People understand how to play and don't use "communication" as a crutch.

Very much this.

And to add to it....alot of people (myself included) will actually do worse if they are on a mic because you're less focused on the game and possibly distracted by the annoying noises of someone else.

You don't need a mic to complete Gold successfully, and you definitely don't for Silver. However, I do agree that it's nice to have a team that communicates.

That said, please see my other post: http://social.biowar...index/11247631/

For the lazy:

I always feel terrible when people are trying to talk to the team but I just sit there silent. Unfortunately my only time to play is usually after 9:00pm, at which point I have already put my son to sleep and cannot talk loudly in case I wake him up (I'm in a small apartment). Also, just because I'm not talking doesn't mean I'm not listening! I wish there was a way to communicate this directly to the people I've played with, but this forum will have to do.

This is also a great argument for why we need text chat in the game. If not in the match itself, at least in the pre-game lobby! I use a headset so people can see I have a mic but I'm not talking, so they probably just think I'm a jerk who doesn't want to talk. Sorry!

Kids. Simple and plain. I game at night and my setup is in the living room with the big tv and comfy chairs. Kids are asleep and the mic is out of the question. On the random days when I have a chance to play while the sun is up, then the mic comes out, but for nighttime, no mic.

I play gold all the time and this not an issue at all. So to sum up, OP can pick any of the names he'd like to call himself but should get over himself. Some folks have priorities.

I don't have a mic and routinely finish silver without anyone else communicating. In fact, I think I've only played around 3-4 games where people used them to strategise, instead of talking about random nonsense

It's a little more required on Gold, but as long as you're not a moron, running off on your own and not keeping an eye on your team and all that, you can manage without one

I don't really feel the need to talk. Setting aside the fact that I lost my headset, nothing about ME's MP makes me feel it is necessary. What's more, I find people with mics are often annoying. I frequently leave lobbies when I hear someone talking because... well, I don't want to hear you talking. Your voice sounds funny, I know how to play the game, and even if you're barking orders at me I'm going to do what I personally feel is best. Too many guys with mics talk a lot about nothing or b*tch and moan about what's going on in the game, and often are the least helpful person on the otherwise silent team.

Sorry, just my counter-rant from my experiences on PS3. Just don't talk so much. You're annoying. Shut up. Actually, I should go.

How about turn off your mic. Most of the time it is totally unnecessary. At least every other game I have to mute someone because they are mouth breathing into their microphone or I can hear constant background noise.

That's why i don't plug in my mic. That's why I say 80% of people who do should not. That's why we can't have nice things.

There really isn't a need for a mic if the person knows what they are doing. Sure, communication can help when it comes to alerting potential threats (phantoms, banshees etc) but if everyone maintains a respectable level of situational awareness it isn't required.

100% agree

And that's why people should have it set up in Mass Effect as Push to Talk :P, or is that only an option on the PC?

I did a gold match the other day and we completed it just fine with no mic communication. I complete silvers all the time without saying a word.

Does it help to communicate? Cetainly. Is it needed? No. All these times I've joined matches where people **** about me having no mic and I outscore them by a mile and have a ton of Revive medals for saving them gives me a fine chuckle. Of course it's a chuckle they won't hear. :P

When I do gold with randoms, most people don't have a mic, and the one person who does talks a lot of crap and dies lol
and then rage quits on wave 7 you know who you are lol
I feel like usually the people without mics on gold know what they are doing, where to defend and stuff, except for a few adventurous low levels of course, and even those I get plesantly surprised occasionally.

I've completed lots and lots and lots of Silver without a mic. It's easy peasy.

Personally, I'd prefer people turn their mics OFF. Some people are funny, but their is a lot of annoyance too. Last Silver I tried probably would have gone a bit better if the two Krogans would stop trying to make funny Krogan jokes to each other.

If you aren't aware of your surroundings, that is your fault, not mine. If people in the lobby ask me to plug my mic in, then I will. Most of the time that doesn't happen and most of the time I only have my headset on when I'm playing with friends. Do I always win gold? Yeah. Do I play Reapers on gold a lot? Yeah. Some people like to blame THEIR mistakes on others, actually, the majority of the gaming community does.

Love to use a mic, albiet occasionally. However, it does not work on my PC despite no problems with any other voice chat program. Basically there is no way to adjust inbound and outbound levels, nor ways to even test if it works unlike most game voice chats. Under impression that PC version has super low outbound levels and only works for certain mics. Would be nice if they either fix it or state which mics actually WORK with this voice chat, mine does not.
