Hi there.

Long story short, I have vocal cord damage. I can talk, but long periods of talking hurt my throat. I usually use up my allotment of "I can talk without pain" time on various adult responsibilities such as work and phone calls every day. When I have some time to relax and play games, I want to stop talking.

I know my situation might not be the most common, but long story short: Yes, there are some excuses.

What this post should really say is: "Bioware, implement text chat already." It's not as fast and responsive as voice, but it can be used effectively. Also, after years of gaming, a lot of people like myself have pretty fast type speeds.

Lmao, you don't need a mic. Not in the slightest. You can just as easily win the game with no one having mics. Would having a mic make it more fun, sure, but you don't need it.

I had a mic on when I first played the game.
People complained that they could hear my dog barking, or little brother and sister in the background so I turned it off.

I don't need to hear people crunching on chips and licking the Cheetos dust off their fingers in between waves. No thank you.

That's why anyone on a mic should have a push to talk set.  Although I don't know how that would work on a console.

It doesn't. I once "played" with a guy who sat by an ammo box for the last three rounds of a Silver and talked on his cell phone.

BIOWARE!  Please make friendly fire an option!!

in my experiance the only ones that "need" a mic are mediocre players. if you have a team that even halfway kows what to do you dont need it.

Played and completed many Gold games without having one. Seems like most people know what's going on, and if they don't, they'll fail anyway, mic or not. I've only run into a couple of events where I saw something coming that others didn't that may have put the match in jeopardy; I just charged in myself and dealt with it.

I have autism, so it's hard for me to talk and play at the same time, so you'll never hear me talking in a game anyway.

It's annoying... but that's why I try to play with friends only. Then again, sometimes them talking can be pretty annoying too... Especially when you're the last one alive and everyone won't stop spamming the mic.

It takes a lot of lobbies to find a game with people that have mics, but it's worth it when you do. Because those are the games where you continue to play and continue to win.

If you have good teammates even Gold is beatable without communication. Well, at least as far as Geth and Firebase White go. Although I did beat a Firebase Ghost with Cerberus on Gold once with no one talking.

You never know who it might be, even Mike Gamble plays without a mic, you might just have kicked / raged on him

Furthermore, it's totally doable on gold without mics, if the team knows what to do. Did Firebase Giant / Cerberus the other day, full extraction, no mics.

and Maybe people shouldn't have a waaaaaaaaaaaaay too sensitive mic where I can hear my gun shots from someones mic. I don't need to hear my gunshots coming from my 2nd computer monitor and through my head headset.

OP, if you are having trouble playing well without communication then adapt and improve. Can't force others to use their mic if they don't want to, especially if they don't have one in the first place.

On silver you definitely don't need it. Don't be stupid, stay in groups or a team, watch for spawn points, and revive if you can. Simple, easy, no-brainer tactics for a co-op game. Every random match game I play on silver is silent...minus the last one where people talked about this horrible glitch that had a vanguard stuck on top of a desk the entire time.

For gold...not sure yet. All of the gold games I've played failed around extraction, or near to it, and mics weren't used for helping others out. Last time someone wondered what a person without a mic was doing. I think all games can be played without a mic, even if it makes it boring sometimes. Then again, PC users are always quiet for some reason.

I've found the only problem with lack of communication on gold is nobody can tell the one infiltrator to go deactivate the 4 devices. Usually ends up with everyone in disaray sacrificing themselves for the greater good.

Other than that, you don't need to communicate in gold either.

I always have my mic on at any level, I feel its a great way to learn off other players and work in a team, I have met some nice people this way and even helped others far more experienced than I of danger near them. Sure it's not esential, but isnt it a social environment anyway? At least I feel it is.

I find it hard to talk to people and actually play better when Im not talking. I can hear people tho but most the time the lobbies are silent.(silv/gold)

I suggest you find like minded others on this forum and then your guarenteed a communicating team.

I am sick of starting SIlver/Gold games and people with their mic's turned off join them. No way are we ever going to complete a gold/silver game without communication, turn it on, there is no excuse.

Gold, sure. But if you need mics and communication to beat silver... then you suck.

I only use my mic with people I know or in party chat, again with people I know. I will listen if people are speaking but for the most part, when I play single, I am quiet. As I play an MMO, my guild does use Team Speak which helps, a lot in PvP but there I am with people I know.

Really? I've successfully finished many silver and one gold (only did one) without a mic.
Proof by contradiction.

What ever did we do before microphones on games? I guess we never played them.
