What was your personal favorite game in the series? Mine was Mass Effect 2, because it fixed the combat engine and had loyalty missions. The loyalty missions were epic, and I learned more about the characters.

Mine was ME1, in which everything was better for me (even the fights which were a lot more RPGish, without nerfed squadmates and were gameplay was much more logic lorewise) exept the cast were ME2 was better (but Wrex missed me a lot).
Loyalty missions are cool but makes me thinks a lot about FFVI game design.

In ME1, my squadmates would do something stupid like stand in the line of fire.

In ME2 too, minus in ME1 they killed the enemy doing so while in ME2 they get killed instead (minus grunt) while killing nobody.

Difficult question for me, probably all of them for different reasons.

ME 1 had a very nice story, unfortunately I couldn't replay it a lot of time, because I didn't like a lot the combat.
ME 2 was a lot of fun, I've played it around 20 times and still, I think, I didn't hear all possible dialogues. Combat was also already good.
ME 3 is just great, I'm now almost at the end of my second playthrough. I love the way they improved the combat part and the possibility to play MP. I also love the dramatism of some dialogues and the fact that even side missions are well integrated into the principal plot.

ME2

ME1 was good with regards to the main plot run. Everything else was generic looking.
ME3 is too sporadic in quality and has too many fetch quests to pad out what is essentially a very short game.

Mass Effect 3
they managed to develop the combat system and, due to the background of two games and the "End of the galaxy" feeling they were able to create great and meaningful dialogues and big scenes.

ME1 was written brilliantly, expecially Virmire, but there was too little roleplay and too few interactions with companions, some of them, like Kaiden and Garrus, were not that interesting back then.

ME2's story was too unfocused, many well written scenarios, but I missed the central theme. I wished more of the loyalties would've been connected to the Collector story.

It was unique, it was different, it was original, it didn't try to appease people who had no right having interest in its world.

It was by far a perfect game, but it had soul.

ME2. A great blend of cinematic presentation and interesting characters. ME1 was extremely weak with everything outside of the main quest missions and ME3 has other issues, which have been outlined across a million threads.

ME3 had more problems then just the ending.

ME1, yes the combat was clunky BUT it had a great story, well written characters and you know what? I even preferred the elevators to the loads screens.

ME1, you simply can't beat the introduction to the universe of ME. Yes the combat was a little chunky and the elevators were joke worthy, but the plot was the best by far and sense of discovery was incredible.

ME1 for the storyline, ME2 for the gameplay/dialogue. I would have liked ME2 more if the beginning didn't feel so forced. To me, at least.

ME1 for its ambience and retro sci-fi space opera feel.

Mass Effect 1. It set the tone for the series. The whole concept of an intergalactic menagerie of aliens, and having special ops known as specters was a pivotal highlight of the series. Shepard had the prestigious honor of becoming the first human specter. This allowed him to garner the necessary resources to take down the menacing renegade specter, Saren. Shepard became a living legend through the incredible deeds that he performed. Along the way he made a unique series of connections with Aliens pertaining to different groups. The ultimate highlight was when he helped take down Sovereign. He showed that one man can pit himself against the odds, and cause gigantic ripples.

My favourite was always ME2, but I've been replaying ME1 and changed my mind, maybe because it's the first one setting everything up and introducing the character's I think I prefer the story of ME1 overall.

ME2. It was always that sweet spot between 1 and 3. I love them all, but 2 is my favourite. Though 3 would have been 2nd if it wasn't for that damned ending and lackluster priority earth mission.

As for RPG elements? Let me point you to JRPGs. FFVII has tonnes of these 'RPG' elements, but is it an RPG?

Nope...
