I always cared more about the characters in Lost rather than the mysteries the show asked, which is why I liked the series finale. It gave me closure with all the characters and I was okay with not getting a technical explanation for what the island was. I have a feeling if they tried to explain it would wind up incredibly corny, i.e. Star Wars force being explained by presence of midichlorians in the bloodstream.

I hated the ending to ME3. I would actually have been okay with never explaining what the Reapers' purpose was and leaving that a big mystery as long as there was a sense of closure - with the characters you've grown to love over the 100+ hours and with the galaxy surviving the defeat of the Reapers. I didn't feel like I got either of those.

I dont see why people always talk about the whole "bitter sweet" thing in ME3. I mean, Mass effect was
already bitter-sweet; people died and sacrafices had to be made, but all that was said and done made sense and was needed. Shephard dieing, for example wasnt needed, especially since he already died in ME2 due to the
collector attack. I mean what was the sweet part? That everyone didnt die on scene? I mean theres bitter and then theres massocistic(spelling?).

I agree.  Mass Effect was always bittersweet with sacrifices starting in the first game already.  When I started hearing rumors about Shepard dying at the end of ME3 I was telling my friends there was no way Bioware would do that because Shepard already died in ME2.  How naive I was back then.

Lost:Loved the show from day one, and the ending a satisfying emotional conclusion also because I had no decision making on how the show ended

ME3: Ending total disaster, no decisions in the games matter, just pick your favouite colour

A bit ironically, with the supposed similarity between the two, the endings were actually almost opposite. Mass Effect's finale emphasized the fate of the universe and the setting while LOST's emphasized the individuals and their fate.

Just Bioware was trying for that with Shepard sacrificing his life to kill the reapers.... But they failed like you said... there was nothing sweet about it.... Bioware needs to take notes from these game on how to do a bitter sweet ending.
Persona 3 FES, MGS3, MGS4, Red Dead Redemption and Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core. I could list alot more.... But im in class right now. :P

The mysteries of the show drew people sure, and they served their purpose in the context of the story, but to say that's the "hook", or points of most interest, is a matter of opinion. I'm trying to point out to you that if you follow the narrative you will see, regardless of what you find most interesting, the story always avoided giving complete answers to the mysteries and spent (by FAR) the most time on the characters and their individual or shared arcs. The pilot is where you grab an audience, look back at that and where the emphasis lies.

Yes and alot of people thought they were holding everything back for a big reveal at the end sicne that was the biggest questions people had, at least for those who followed lost for the island.

My god FES, 30+ hours of arguably nothing but closure on what had been already established.

Yea, it was more fan service than anything for people... and also so they could cannonize what happened. Since they left it up to you the gamer to decide if he lived or not in persona 3.

Lost: i had already lost any hope in a good ending, but the finale still upset me a lot, however the bad writing was already expected .

ME3: if possible, it upset me even more than the Lost's cheap finale, maybe because i still liked the game and was hoping in an epic conclusion (whatever it was happy or twisted), or because i haven't foreseen such a bad writing...

In the end, i felt cheated with both endings, and they have a lot in common.
In fact, if they don't pull off some kind of miracle with the extended cut, i'll consider Mass Effect the "Lost" of videogames.

I didn't like Lost, period. A Lost-style ending in a narrative that was always made sense up until that point is a sure way to get your name on everybody's ****list.

I loved the ending of Lost. I thought that it kept the focus on the bigger themes that the series had (shephard's story - no capitalization - learning to admit you need help, reaching out to others and letting go). In my eyes Lost kept it's focus, gave closure and gave enough details to figure the deeper meanings out a lot better than ME3.

And, I hate the ending of ME3.

OT: Also loved the ending of BSG

Ha you just reminded me of this. This Joker knows exactly how story structure works.

I can't help but hope that the next Arkham game takes a jab at ME3's ending.

Lost, lost me somewhere early on I did try to pick up the threads no luck. I wikied the end glad I didn't watch all six seasons.

ME3 didn't quite cleanly pick up from ME2 then they threw the crucible in and right at the end the catalyst though I knew about the endings beforehand its a different thing to feel the emotions at end and the lack of resolution and sense.

Both leave questions unanswered, ME3 I think more so, though the threads were unravelling when they introduced the crucible.

I never watched Lost, but I've heard a decent amount of spoilers that I have a vague idea how it ended...and that a decent number of people were pissed about the fact that the writers lied about having planned the entire arc since the beginning...

It's the same major gripe I have with BSG's ending...yeah somethings didn't make sense, but it could've been much worse (ME3). Ronald Moore and that other guy pretty much implied they had a plan with the statement that the Cylons "have a plan". That plan turned out to be made up as it went along, ultimately making no logical sense (ME3) and they tried to cover their mess with the two-hour special "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan". Ignoring that lie, the ending is actually pretty decent and fits with the established universe of "Drama with a Sci Fi setting".

But, to answer your question: No, I would not like to be yanked around with plots that make no sense just to get an ending that raises more questions when it promised to answer all--I would hate Lost's ending -> I hate ME3's ending on the same principle....

BSG lost me as soon as they discarded the clear implication that humanity originated on Earth and the 13th tribe simply returned to their forgotten ancestral homeworld.

The final season of LOST was a mess, but the actual finale wasn't bad.

ME3's ending is insufferable garbage.

The ending of lost was kinda dumb, how he opens the doors to the light. Me3 was worse, though. Shows two perspectives of stupid. Lost was really happy/cheery in the end because of everybody being together, and ME3 was absolutely **** up the galaxy kind of stuff, horrible ending where your sacrifice makes everybody's lives worse. Lost's was a little better.

Love both of them but dislike the endings in them.

Though I did like the BSG ending.

Lost's ending betrayed that the creators really had no idea how to resolve the many riddles they had created, and just made it all up as they went along. The only thing that made that ending bearable was the fact that they stayed true to the characters- even if that stupid "it was all a post-mortem state"-angle was really stupid and could have been added to just about any other series.

In short: I was disappointed, and felt that the creators had failed spectacularly, yet it was still slightly better than ME3's ending.

I just hope the DLC pulls a rabbit out of its hat so I dont have to think of my disappointment for lost, with ME.
