My Darling Bioware .....

Actually this isn't really a missive describing how much I love the game, I do mind you but this is more of a request.

It occurs to me that a great deal of the discussion about the game, here and elsewhere on the net is about how to get the romance plotlines to work and how to go about getting various characters into bed.  It seems to me that there are a great many people keen as mustard to follow their hearts (or trousers) in one way or another in the game.  They love it!

People are gagging for romance (pardon the pun) and obviously want more. I confess that as an old-type bird, I felt transported straight back to my teens and getting all fluttery stomached from reading romance novels,
listening to achy love songs over and over and developing utterly unrealistic ideas about what boys were like.  Ah, the sweet tragedy of it all!  And what with 2/3 of the developed world's teenage girls all heaving-bosom and
breathless over The Twilight Saga, it would appear that Romance is the new black.. or rock.. or something.  Did you  know that in publishing, the romance genre accounts for over half of ALL book sales?!

And this got me thinking.  Future player made content will no doubt be excellent.  I'm always utterly gobsmacked at how brilliant player mods are and how they so greatly enhance games (Oblivion was a completely different animal once I had found all the right mods for me and I still play it).  But the difficulty that modders face is the one of voice acting and the production value problem that poses.   So what they can't really do is make more content about the characters in the game already.

So Bioware, please release Romance DLC!  I want to burn, freeze and hack at baddie undead monsters as much as the next person but I would like to carry on my hard won romances with Alistair and Zev.  I’ve not attempted a Morrigan tryst yet, she’s a bit scary.  I would like to have bath conversations, I would like them to make comments when I fall in battle (all “NOOOOO” and “I will avenge you!” – you know the sort of thing).  I would like more options to carry on having interesting conversations with them after we’ve reached 100% lovey-doveyness, their chatter falls off rather once you've made them love you at the moment.   I want the story lines to be slow, deep and exciting (ahem sorry.)  But I want it to fit perfectly and integrate with my exploring, fighting and killing.   And it won't be the same without the same actor voices, it just wouldn't.  So you'll just have to pay the chaps that do them another tenner or two.

Anyway, it’s up to you Bioware, we can’t do it ourselves, you have to bring the hearts, flowers and tonguey snogs to us.

[edit - huge apologies for the formatting! argh]

Certainly one of the more well constructed "Letter to " I've seen, Bravo.

I doubt I'd download the DLC, but there'd certainly be a market for it. The question is whether or not the voice actors would particularly relish speaking out the parts. Then again, there are some incredibly cheesy lines...

That is something I missed from infinite undiscovery, when one of your friends or your love interest died you would scream no!! Crying out for their name, etc. They would reciprocate, would have to be changed a bit as..yeah, but still!

I think there's definitely a market!  And as far as the voice actors are concerned, well they ARE actors and I suspect as such, they've had to do much more humiliating things on the road to where they are today than to speak a few romantic or saucy lines for wads of cash! :)  And they're professionals goddammit!

And as far as the lines are concerned, I certainly don't want it to be humourless garbage.  What's so great about the romance in the game as it is, is the quality of the dialogue.  It's very witty and wry.  And the banter between the party members is fab.  I would like more of the same.

Give me a job Bioware!! I'll come and write some storylines for you! ^_^

Hmm, you bring up a good point. I'd certainly pay five dollars just for an hour of banter between Alistair and Morrigan, those two amuse me to no end. That's probably one of the parts I enjoy most about the game, the characters truly feel alive, more so than they used to before in Bioware games.

The first Bioware game I played was KotOR, and it's suquel, KotOR II, made such a good use of party members conversing with one another, I couldn't help but love the game in spite of it's hiccups.

I think, as well as romance, there'd be a huge market for giving companion quests their own zone. I, for one, would love a quest for, say, Leliana, where we travel to Orlais to tie up some loose end from her days as a bard. Or a more complex one with Zevran, where the party (or just the PC and Zevran, either way) travel to Antiva to secure his liberty from the Crows.

They could put these in the amorphous world after the end of the blight, and I'd certainly buy them. They'd make quite a bit of many selling DLC using nothing more than the story they currently have, their current voice actors, and in-game systems. Who wouldn't love to play through a Fade-dream sequence with a party member to explore their past?

I know I'd pay for it.

Yes, I think deeper romance plotlines would have to be download or expansion only. I wouldn't want to force other players to take part in soppy or for that matter, smutty stories if they didn't want to. Imagine! Some hardened gamer, keen only on slashing their way through hordes of monsters having to "esc, esc, esc" through bags of dialogue as Zevran desperately tries to get into their knickers. No no, that would be no good at all.

But there are plenty of us, I think, who WOULD like it.

On that note actually, I've just finished my second playthrough, choosing to ride off into the sunset with Zev. I'm a bit disappointed, I thought he would say more interesting and personal things to me during the last act (from Redcliffe through to the end really). We'd been through so much together!! The most intriguing comment about my relationship with him was made by Morrigan. *Sighs*

oh well, I can dream that someone important reads this and thinks it's a winner. :)

Yup, I think it's quite a shame that the 'chatter' options fall away when you're romancing someone. I wouldn't mind if there was at least something for showing affection or whatever. The options to just kiss them or tell them to go away are a bit... meh imo.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind either to have an option to start a romance later on, instead of having only one chance in the game. Or: why wouldn't NPC's be able to flirt a bit in an attempt to get attention? (I sooooo was laughing at Oghrens comment once at the camp about breast meat or something... dwarfs and flirting... *shakes head*) It would make things just a bit more realistic for those who want that.

Yes exactly!  I also thought there need to be more options or chatter at important moments like before the landsmeet.  I'm sure my character would have turned to Alistair and asked him if he was alright and ready to go in or to bloody stand up straight and not to pick his nose during the meeting.  Or with Zev, I'm sure he would have said something reassuringly naughty to me.

However, I was also thinking today about how amusingly unrealistic it all is.  Alistair, bless him, if you don't whip him into shape after meeting his shrew of a sister (and by the way, every time I read that someone has 'hardened' him, I end up sniggering like an 8 year old) he remains a bit of a buffoon, which is sort of sweet but I think if I married him I'd end up wanting to put something in his tea! That 'yeeeeeEEEEES?' he does when you activate him would definately get dreary after a bit.

I don't know, maybe I'm just nit-picking and I think I'm in danger of sounding like a bit of a looney, but it's always been the story arcs and character development that have made Bioware games more interesting than others.  And I'm just feeling all romantic at the moment. :)

I agree, very well written. It would be nice if they added female elves and dwarves as potential love interest. Maybe add them as companions in a DLC.

I love Alistair and Leliana as they are and really hated the fact that I had to harden them to get the plot to go in the direction I wanted it to go in. I like him being goofy and kind of like your silly best friend. Though I do admit I cant really see him being King in that state.

I meant to reply to you before frozen_lord but I got distracted. :).  I don't think wanting to see the cut scenes again is because your a guy or a bad thing.   I think many of the ladeez out there like them too.  I just think there needs to be an option to be able to turn them on or off depending on whether you want them all the time or not.  Someone please make a mod to change the ghastly bread-dough underwear!  What ARE they!?

And I would like it if Alistair didn't stick his fingers into my head when he kisses me.  I was a bit concerned that in some horrible incident he'd been spawnified and he was trying to suck out my brain but then I realized it was just a clipping issue.

Lol, I am absolutely certain you have like-minded friends out there who will no doubt be making a mod with you in mind!  Oblivion had mods that would make you blush.  I'm talking about expanding relationships with the current game party members, though.

As a lady once said, "if hardcore fantasty hot elf sex is all you care about, then that's what you'll receive"! ;)

I'm a guy and dont really need to see the sex scenes over and over. Once is fine and then I get the general idea. Asking for hot cgi sex...you would probably be better served watching hentai. Let me suggest Legend of the Overfiend to you. After you watch that you'll never look at Japanese anime the same way.

disclaimer: I am not seriously endorsing Legend of the Overfiend. My friend told me it was a great anime, gave it to me, and since my little girl loves Ranma 1/2 I sat down to watch it with her. Worst mistake of my life...

There is a new mod to do just that - http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=231

There are 3 different ones depending on what race you are playing, the one above is for humans.

enjoy :)

I just want them to release a revision of the ending(s). Every single ending has been very dissatisfying to me, especially the Morrigan one(s).

Also, cutting to "end credits" is so...last millennium. Let us freely roam around the world after the coronation, to all the various places we've visited. It's not like it would be difficult to do, and would even make it easier for people to add more long-term interactions between the main characters.

I would SO pay for more dialogue and companion quests! Definitely a brilliant idea. I'd also like to see the NPCs start relationships with each other. Like, if I am not romancing Leilana and Zevran, maybe they would start to hook up and they will try asking you for advice. I want to spend more time developing relationships, been thinking about writing fanfiction to satisfy my needs but DLC would be even better.

For my Dalish elf female, the idea of being thrown into the "human" world and the task of ending the blight has hardly left her time to come to terms with Tamlen's death and to develop love for Alistair or Zevran. I mean, sure she does fall in love eventually with Alistair but I wouldn't say it's a developed relationship. There's simply too much questing and fighting going on to get to know the guy better or to develop a really strong bond. Duty is what holds them together but.. eh, I'd like there to be more, beyond just fighting the Blight that will move these two characters together.

Ultimately I'd like to see a scene in the game where the PC has to save their lover or vice versa and the rest of the party isn't involved or are minorly involved. Would be SO awesome..

For Male PCs, there is something a little like this with the Morrigan romance.

I have mostly played with Morrigan, Leliana, and Alistair in my party.  I kind of ignored the rest of the characters for the most part, except for times when I had to use them.

For my version of the story, my character fell in love with Morrigan, and she fell in love with him.  I believe I had her up to 100 (Love) without even giving her a single item.  I didn't even give her the Black Grimoire until the day before the Landsmeet.

I always considered Leliana and Alistair a good match.  It seemed like they would be good for each other.  Alistair even talks to Leliana, in party, about Morrigan and my character's relationship.

When the new toolset comes out, if I am motivated enough, I may do a Dragon Age: Origins Remix version that fills in some of the holes.

You lost me at Twilight saga, which is perhaps the worst romance story of all time. "My boyfriend isn't around, so I might as well try to kill myself. Without a boy in my life, my life is meaningless." What gets me is parents encouraging young adolescent girls to read the books, because they supposedly encourage abstinence. They call Bella this incredible role model, when in reality, Bella is encouraging girls to place no worth in themselves and suggest their entire worth as a human being is determined by being in a relationship. (This is a rant for another day, because the author admits the entire Twilight saga is written to espouse Morman values, which do to an extent suggest that women are created to get married and have kids. That is their worth).

This robs Romeo and Juliet, which is also a misunderstood story. Shakespeare wrote at length about mature relationships and love. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo wants to die because of Rosaline who was his existence. That very same day he sees a girl and decides instantly that she is his new existence. Screw Rosaline. Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet to mock this version of so-called love. When Twilight apes it, Meyer proves she isn't intelligent enough to see what is wrong with the story.

Real romance isn't nearly as crazy or ephemeral.

That being said, the BG series had tons and tons and tons of player made mods for companions you can romance.

You will definitely see tons of that with DA:O.

Hello enderandrew :)

Whilst I do take your point and I confess I've only read the first one - the series is such a phenomenon that I thought I'd better (I'm a bit long-in-the-tooth for it really), I think you have to remember that angsty, teenage, love fiction has been around forever and most girls understand it really for what it is.  I don't really care what Ms Meyer's motives were, I just viewed it as another wonderful, hormonally charged story about vampires and forbidden love.  It's emo fluff.   I think most girls nowadays are way beyond being told that they are brood mares who do the laundry.  It's very different for those who live witihin certain secular communities but I think that for most young women in the Western world, the idea of leading an independent life is already 'out of the box' so to speak.  NB!!! I realize that there are many, many women are not able to lead independent lives but that, as you put it, is a conversation for another time and place please.

Real romance isn't nearly as crazy or ephemeral.

And, I'm afraid that when I was a teenager,
romance WAS crazy and ephemeral!   I was as daft as anything.  :) And
the fiction (books, music, films etc) was for fun.  It was a bit silly and a lot of it was awful but who cares!

I don't think 'romance' in that sense exists after you reach a certain stage of having relationships,  you sort of come to understand the 'game mechanics' of it all, you stop behaving like an idiot and thank the LORD is what I say.  But parts of the romantic whirl were great fun, which is why I enjoyed finding myself getting a little silly with the game.

That being said, the BG series had tons and tons and tons of player made mods for companions you can romance.

You will definitely see tons of that with DA:O.

But that was sort of my original point, modders can't really expand on the game characters in the way that Bioware could.  I would like Bioware to indulge me and when they make DLC ( I doubt very much I will get one entirely devoted to my love interests) they include more relationship content.

I also really want to say that even though I don't agree with your post entirely, I really appreciate the discussion.  I worry sometimes that when replying to things like this, it sounds scratchy and confrontational.  I like a good debate. :)

Phew, I've written a lot, hope nobody minds ^_^

Just write/read romance fan-fics and you'll be satisfied.
