 I want to get Haer'Dalis in my party ASAP. At low levels, I'm just barely able to defeat Mekrath without casualties. But now I'm supposed to bring the gem to the inn. And then HD will be imprisoned and I have to save him again. I know I'm not strong enough to go there. Will Haer leave the party if I wait too long to go back to Five Flagons?

The simple answer is yes, he will get upset and leave if you don’t take him to the inn.

There are some tricks/ tactics to prolong the time but the only long term strategy that I’m aware of involve traveling the underdark, so that’s probably not a good idea for you.

If you decide to tackle the prison then I suggest walking into the portal cloaked and use a scroll of ‘Death Fog’ to kill the big boss.

She means invisible. There's a mage spell, invisibility 10' radius, that could be used to have the party go invisible. Cleric buffs are very helpful in this area (chaotic commands, free action, death ward). Cloudkill wand useful as well.

Possibly the area can be done easiest with Keldorn in the party. His 2x dispel magic would get rid of the warden's protections -- without them, he falls easily to concentrated fire. Use cleric buffs when engaging the master of thralls. Summons can be quite useful in this area as well.

ok great, so where do I find THAT scroll? Or the OTHER scroll I just mentioned? I don' have either of those spells. Actually I do have death fog, but I'm not capable of casting it as a memorized spell yet, so I need to find another scroll.

I googled around, and I can't find a single source that provides locations for where to buy or find the countless wizard spells/scrolls there are.

I think you are misunderstanding. She means put the death fog scroll in your wizard's/bard's quick slot and then cast from the quick slot, NOT memorize it, as you have to be fairly high level to cast it. Doing it like this would allow using death fog regardless of your caster's level.

As to where the scrolls are, I'm not sure off-hand. I assume you checked the spell merchant behind Ribald on the 2nd floor, the spell merchant just above the Seven Vales in Waukeen's Promenade, and Bernard will have some high level scrolls once you free Hendak (Copper Coronet). Watcher's Keep merchant has a ton of spells as well. See if any of those have something you want. Just remember you can cast ANY arcane spell from scroll (quickslot), which is handy if you aren't quite high enough level to cast otherwise.

EDIT: Guess I should mention this will "use up" the scroll when casting this way.

no, I am not misunderstanding anything.

And by the way, that invisibility tactic doesn't work because one of the thralls dispels the illusion as soon as you enter. And even with haste, you can't run out of the way in time.

And I don't see how death fog helps against the warden, he just wanders out of the way.

1. In the vanilla game you will get a ‘Death Fog’ scroll while saving the slaves at the Copper Coronet in the slums district.

2. Walking through the portal cloaked just byes you time to move your party and get in an opening shot (like wand of ‘Cloud kill’ ) before the battle starts.

There are other tactics but this is the simplest and most reliable way;

In group play send one guy to release the Thrails then cast ‘Death Fog’ onto the ground without revealing your location... if you get too close he will send some of his peons after you but regardless the fog will dispatch him.

cloudkill won't work well if the enemies are charging at you. It also doesn't help when one of the yuan-ti mages casts lots of buffs at the start if you don't shoot them the moment you step through. Going in hasted is about the only way I survived that fight.

and with Death fog, the Warden comes after you, even if you haven't revealed yourself (gotten close enough for him to speak)

Take a good look at the screenshots m8;

My sorcerer moved up without being spotted. Edge up until you see a Thrail then step back and cast at the ground by the Thrails feet... If the Warden comes at you then you got way too close.

p.s. I had my Cleric cast ‘Farsight’ (reveals the area ) simply for good screenshots... it’s not needed to kill the guy.

That is exactly what I did. And the warden still chased me.

But nevermind all of that. I inched forward slowly towards the master of thralls (not drawing agro from more than a 2 or 3 enemies at a time). And then I saved and reloaded when battling the Thrall master multiple times until I got lucky and only had one or two party members Stunned (even when I summon stuff to distract him, he will still cast his area hold spell on my main party), so I could kill him. Then I activated that thing that closes up the holes and causes the thralls to attack the warden.

Then I hasted everyone, quicksaved, and attacked the warden with brute force. I reloaded about 7 or 8 times until I got lucky and never let him launch a devastating spell against us.

That save-and-reload-until-you-get-lucky strategy is about the only tactic that works for me against spellcasters.

My party members had 460k-560k XP and I was using no mods.

That area's a blast for a thief, because you can leave your main party down a hole for most of it, send your stealthed thief up with their new boots to backstab those mages, and run back down. Valygar with celestial fury is loads of fun too.

500000 xp for each party member is more than enough to have no trouble inside the Planar prison. If you're having trouble with the Warden, there is something about your tactic that's the problem. Or possibly the spell selection. Or lack of some gear. Or all together. BTW you could postpone joining Haerdalis until later. First of all, if you join him at higher levels he'll be far more experienced, and even might have ** in Longswords. Second, you don't have to rescue him straight away after he's kidnapped. Do some minor quests first and raise party mage levels to 12 so you may cast Protection from Magical energy, which will solve your problem vs ADHW.

To avoid being stunned by the Master of Thralls, I use one of two tactics:
1) While out of sight, send some worthless summons to the Master of Thralls, who get stunned - then the party can charge. NOTE: the MoT sees through invisibility, so don't let him see you at all during this process.
2) Put free action and chaotic commands on my two melees have them charge. This makes them immune to both the hold and stun attacks and then it's victory.

As for the Warden, USSNorway strategy does work. A mage/thief is perfect for this though. As you can cast the death fog, and then immediately hide in the shadows. The warden would then be completely clueless on who is killing him. My fighter/thief Picenon used this strategy extensively.

As I mentioned before, an inquisitor dispel magic (such as Keldorn) makes the Warden a chump. He doesn't last long when his buffs get dispelled.

As for the initial group, I usually do maximum buffs, all I have really, even item buffs and that sees me through every time. Do you have a druid? Plague of insects is very helpful for the initial group of enemies.
