Not sure about humming songs but...

I always thought a short mass effect "mini musical" parody would be funny, but of course its something a fan of the series would write, and a parody is usually of something that has merit in the first place, so as much as I have one or two funny ideas to mash together, its really not worth my time to give bioware the "gift" of me being a fan...

Great sidenote about Tali and the parallel universe solution that you created for her.  That was cool.  As for the paragraph that I highlighted above, I think you summed up the main point I was futilely trying to verbalize late last night.  Unfortunately my comment became so fuddled and disjointed that I ended up just putting a warning at the top and hitting the 'submit' button.  And then I went to bed.  I re-read my post this morning and got a nice chuckle out of how I ended that comment.  "I am not God".  Wow, that line was pure solid gold.  lol.

Many (many) pages ago I explained why my first Shepard arrived at the Destroy option - and while I won't bore you with the gorey details again, I do want to mention that Destroy seemed to work for that character.  No, Malcolm Shepard isn't evil, and no I, bc525, am not a genocidal maniac.  At least I hope I'm not.

I've read so often that many players literally "lost" their Shepard at the ending, and I just started playing with some ideas about why a character would suddenly break from its established form at the critical moment of the story.  In my previous comment from last night that was where the whole "breaking point for Shepard" concept materialized in my scrambled thought process.  Of course, the obvious answer is just plain bad writing, and in this case that's probably the correct answer.  Bioware just messed up in dramatic fashion, and then covered their gaffe with a blanket of "artistic integrity".

But ... I thought about the dreams and visions Shepard had been having, and I wondered if Shepard had been disintegrating before my eyes throughout ME3.  In a way that makes the ending more confusing.  If Shepard was disintegrating throughout and managed to hold it together and have such resolve for so long, then why crumble with the finish line in sight?  Ultimately drayfish is right, to some degree we all got screwed by the ending.  Even my Shepard that was okay with choosing Destroy gets screwed by the extreme fallout and devastation that occurs with his decision.  Even when fulfilling his goal, he still fails.

I suppose BioWare could argue that there's some glimmer of hope in the ending.  The bizarre "breath scene" could be taken as a sign of hope I guess, just as the sappy scene with old man Stargazer and his little grandson could symbolize a sense of hope.  Synthesis tries to offer up some sense of a fresh and hopeful beginning, but as others have expressed hope gets lost in the forced nature of how Synthesis is executed.

Dr. Dray, I thank you for that post. It was very interesting read and I can tell from the thread length it has caused quite a stir amongst the forum.

I hope both the naysayers and yesmen have all read this post and took it at as first a critical opinion and second as an educated fan trying to find reason. In your argument you even stated that Bioware could potentially re-write the ending and we would receive it and gave evidence of well known authors doing just that.

I clap my hands in delight at how well put together your argument is and I agree whole heartily. There were a lot of themes in the game and the three ending choices just destroy the whole game and its concept. The blindness of Bioware astounds me. I just do not understand why they can not be mature and go: Yes we realize now the endings suck and we want to improve this.

IT is the way to go. I'm not all for it, but in my opinion, is has the most logical approach behind it that could take the game back to its roots.

Plus I had another thought: maybe these endings are deliberately done to not provide an ending to pave the way for DLC and to keep the Multiplayer game alive. Because in the multiplayer game, the Reaper war is not over. I imagine the multiplayer game picks up after a paragon Sheppard united the Geth and Quarians because all the races are available for you to use. Looking at this part, it would be insane for the game to have an actual ending when the multiplayer encourages us to continue to play through.

I think there is more at work. EA want money. Mass Effect sells better then sex to us science fiction fans and there is probably more to be plumbed. However I think Bioware are naive that we would have taken these endings and then been "shocked" when an expansion pack or DLC came out expanding more on Earth.

Now we shall see in July if this EC is worth the hype.

I'd have bought that. Seriously, at this point, breaking the fourth wall would have been better.

In fact the way bioware raises its money through EA could be seen to have paralells to the film/production/film again... Left to your imagination of course...

Since Allers basicly was Chobot in all but name and field of journalism, was her inclusion almost breaking the fourth wall?

Sorry I didn't really comment on this last night, but I did think that it was interesting to consider that Shepard may have broken without us realizing, that we assumed s/he would just keep going as long as we kept pushing them along, but in the end s/he is only as human as we ourselves. And I think to an extent BioWare tried that a bit with things like Thessia, though I'm not sure how effective that was.

The dreams and such do give the indication the Shepards mind was going through some stress, though as has been pointed out before they were a bit hamfisted in the forcing our Shepard to care about this child, regardless of background etc. And as you said why finally crumble so close to the end.

The whole thing gets a bit muddied too because Shepard always seemed so unfazed by everything, no matter what your Shepard's alignment or choices they always seemed to rise above everything thrown at them, a true larger than life figure. I mean Shepard comes back from the grave and just seems to shrug it off, to paraphrase Monty Python and the Holy Grail:

"They killed me."

"Killed you?"

"I got better."


All in all though I've always disliked being forced to fail, unless it really worked well in the story.
