Sten told me about his sword, I went to where he lost it, then to the person who bought it. However, my quest log does not advance based on what he says, so when I go to the person HE sold it to and pay him 6 gold, I get nothing and the quest does not advance then either.

Did you read all the dialogue properly and get the sword from his chest in the back room?

I'm having the same problem: the chest isn't lighting up when you hit Tab.

Same thing happened to me. I think sometimes the conversation just doesn't register for the quest log. I believe that the only known solution is to load to before you talk to the merchant at the Frostback Mountains...
