Great videos, but I find the full melee build almost overkill. Nothing withstands the heavy melee with just the bonus from blade armor and the rank 4 melee bonus, so I go with the shield recharge and level 6 fitness bonus to armor and give myself a little bit better survival. Even in the off chance something does survive the blade stagger + heavy melee, BB is ready right away again.
Just my choice and glad to see the BS getting some needed recognition.
I concur. I find that it is necessary to invest into the shields and health spec for the sixth rank of fitness. The inability to one shot phantoms isn't a huge deal, considering that in most situations your teammates will focus fire the boss enemies.
Having the ability to deal massive burst and melee damage doesn't mean much when you're always having to spend so much time in cover. Against Geth and Reapers I found more difficulty with this full melee strategy.
I agree with a little extra defense going a long way here--playing on XBox, it's just not possible to get quite the precision and speed you can on PC (and I'm probably not quite as good as these guys anyway). I opted for
Blade Armor - Melee Damage/Shield Recharge/Damage Reduction
Fitness - Health-Shields/Martial Artist/Melee Synergy
That gives me 1050/1050, a 15% bonus to shield recharge, and a total of 25% DR. Melee Synergy at rank 6 of fitness is too good--the extra bonus you get to weapon damage after a heavy melee made it worth taking the defense bonus at 4 instead, even though that's only a +15% instead of +25%. I also really never got much out of Damage Returned on Blade Armor--I know it's useful, but I find the shield recharge to be useful more frequently. That also made me feel much more comfortable taking martial artist at rank 5 of fitness.
I've noticed a significant difference in survivability vs. going all melee and Damage Returned. I don't get downed on silver at all anymore, and I can actually clear gold with a Batarian toting a GPS III. I guess it makes me a little less effective at death-punching primes/brutes/etc., but a 70/30 type melee/defense build seems very viable for the less aggressive among us. As a sidenote, I also specced into three ranks of inferno grenades this time, sacrificing the 25% weight bonus at rank 6 of Batarian Enforcer. Pretty cool--I think they're worth taking just for panic mode and fun, but obviously a Batarian build can work either way.
