OK, this one is causing me trouble. The leader in the final room. After the dialog you are standing the in the open, - blood mage leader plus other mages at the other side of the room - and several melee chaps to your left and right. Most of their names are in orange for me, not yellow.

When the fight starts, no matter what I try and do my whole party gets nailed in seconds. Try to take out the melee first as they are closest. Dead. Try to break through to take down the mages first. Dead from the melee.

My party is around level 9 at the moment, comprised of:

- Main - Rogue (dual weapons)
- Lelianna (archer)
- Morrigan (some heal spells plus damage abilities)
- Alistair (tank - sword and shield).

Am I at this fight at too low a level, or doing something else wrong?

do you have forcefield and crushing prison on morrigan? those two will take care of the mages. ie forcefield on the bloodmage leader and crushing prison on the apprentice. let alistair occupy guards while you make sure the apprentice bloodmage is dead before the forcefield go down on the main boss. (you might even have taken the guard out. make sure you interrupt every major spell by the boss so hit him hard. try to keep him from casting by stun, freeze. cone of cold on the guard works if you can spare morrigan a few seconds. the main should be backstabing. i had shale, morrigan, main (rogue like you) and alistair or might have been sten. keep a close eye on the health for whoever it is that occupy the guards.

if you don't have either of those spell or don't have any way of draining the enemy mana the battle might be on the hard side and you might want to levelup a few times to correct your flaws.

You can lower the difficulty just for that fight.

I had Sten occupy the melee guys while everyone else unloaded on the 2 mages. Once the mages are dead mop up is a piece of cake. Sten usually dies in fights like that, but that's what he's for.

I'm also having a problem with Morrigan correctly casting healing spells via tactics - i.e half the time she simply does not do it. Alistair >50 = heal in slot one, ally >50 heal in slot 2 - but the silly cow still chooses to unload damage spells whilst people drop below 50% health.

iirc that mage starts off with ritual spells so go stab him in the face before he finishes them and nukes you

well if you set the tactics to heal when alistair is over half health then its no wonder you dont get what you want:)

Uh... could it be because you have her set to heal if the ally's health is greater than 50%? Because that's what you wrote...

In any case, I just did this mission tonight. I found it pretty easy. This is what I did (party was Alistair, Me - 2h warrior, Lelilana and Wynne).

1) Open door.
2) Wynne casts crushing prison on the mage to the right of the boss.
3) Alistair and I bumrush towards the boss.
4) Lelilana starts her Arrow of Slaying attack on the boss.
5) Arrow hits right as Alistair and I get to the mage. Alistair bashes him on the ground and we kick his face in.
6) During this period of time Wynne is just healing everyone.
7) Quick love tap from the chasind great maul finishes off the the mage.
8) Clean up the pathetic melee.

I found that the melee guys were actually quite weak. If I had needed to I could have force fielded one of them or just ran Wynne around the room while they chased her. Getting the mages down first is really a priority and I find that opening with Arrow of Slaying and then following it up with a big fat Final Blow from a meaty 2h weapon generally knocks out most bosses except for the obvious stage fights (brood mother, arch demon, etc).

On easy and normal it's an easy fight, on hard or nightmare I personally pull back the whole team in the room before as I've placed a few traps in and around the door opening, taking care of all the melee while healing myself up; after I just set in full charge on the 'main' boss (With posions, bombs, etc.).

Though I did him around level 20.

I might do some other stuff first, and come back to him in a few levels. Morrigan for me does not yet have the talents / spells mentioned above - which is probably why I'm struggling.

I stealth and sneak up on him. Then back stab him with my 2 paralyze runed sword.

A point on tactics: the order they're in influences their priority. I would put self healing and party healing in slots 1 and 2. Otherwise, she'll do all the attacks first and miss the chance.

I set Dogmeat's tactics to use his best attack on the nearest mage the nearest mage. Its hard to cast spells with a Mabari all over you.Overwhelm is a quick mage killer, Dog rules mages.

Last playthrough I had my mages throw off some stuns (that second earth skill in the primal line), shield bash and then two angry templars going to down on the bosses ass. Sword n' board with face-slamming interrupts and dual-wielding berserker with an affinity for riposte stuns and the punisher KD.

and Holy Smite. hehe.

I hate fighting mages so much I generally build at least one templar just for mage killing, last play-through with two, it was actually amusing to see them drop.

what you do is send your tank for his ass and use your mage for cc

The most obvious tactic is to run back out the door and deal with the enemy a piece at a time. The Mages tend to spend time buffing if you don't attack them so run out the door and around the corner. Kill the melee then kill the Mages when they come.

If you plan on charging headfirst into every single fight then your going in for some real hard times later down the line.

Even the loading screen tips tell you a head on charge isn't the best idea.

Pretty much what Cid said. With a group set up like that I would first try to CC the boss and kill the weaker mage while the tank holds the melee and kills the non-elite merc by himself and your mage focuses support.

Your dps should kill the first mage very quickly and at this point the priority for me would be the boss. It may be a boss but it's still wearing cloth so tearing through his health shouldn't be too much of a problem. He should go down asap and you should stop him from using Blood Wound. You can use the pillars in the room to line of sight him and draw him to the front of the room if he's focusing on your mage (as he did in my case after Wynne did the initial force field). If you get him to the front of the room you can throw your tank on him as well and he should die even faster. Then just kill the elite that's still on your tank and that's it.
