They had one contact in ME2, but NOTHING in ME3.
There was a line in ME2 where she turned down a promotion to Admiral because she felt it was a political ploy.
And that the best way for her to honor her child's legacy was to captain a ship - the Orizaba, by the way.
In ME3, Admiral Hackett just passes on the word that she's proud of Shepard.
Wow. Talk about short shrift. Why did they even bother?
I'm sorry, but i ME2 you'd think one of the first calls Shepard would make when Cerberus brought him/her back would be to let her know he was still alive.
In ME3, you'd think that she would be one of the people he'd want to say goodbye to!!
I don't know about you, but I would have loved to see some exchanges with 'mom' while all this was going on!
(Maybe he/she could introduce the LI to mom??)

Okay, anyone else notice that (if Shepard is a Spacer) that his/her mother is weirdly absent?

Shepard's mother is actually voiced in Mass Effect 1 if you have the spacer background. So we hear less and less with each installment. Honestly I think this is just one of those things they do nothing with for the sake of programing and scripting ease. I think it's a key difference and they did something with it in Mass Effect 1, but never bothered afte that. I sometimes wonder if they plan on doing something with it and it gets cut due to time or budget issues. From their perspective differences between Shepard's need to be kept to a minimum if possible. The game already factors in tons of choices and variations on the Shepard character. So some things they just keep constant to make things easier on them.

In ME1, the Backgrounds/Profiles served a real purpose IMHO. Shepard was a pre-made hero, handpicked by Anderson and Hackett to be the 1st Spectre. Thus, the Backgrounds/Profiles were a way to personalise our Shepards with some backstory, make him/her feel like our character. Bioware actually did this with even greater effect in Dragon Age: Origins, where players really got different origins with their own quests.
In ME2 and ME3, it wasn't necessary anymore, because for those games ME1 was THE backstory now. The Backgrounds/Psychological Profiles was off-screen anyway, so I'd rather have kept other elements (like returning ME2 characters) than this aspect. There's always time/budget/resource issues, so I thought it was a fair enough trade-off. Though limited, I thought Hackett's brief mention of it fit, considering how professional Mum Shepard seemed in ME1.
The other thing I wanted to mention was this - with the OTHER Backgrounds/Profiles, they were loose ends that Shepard wanted to tie up and close off. I remember killing off my Earthborn Shepard's former gang members to wipe that past clean. That was never brought up in ME2 or ME3 (just as planned). So I already see having a single mention of Hannah as a bonus already.

I can see that. It just seems a shame, though. Have you ever seen mention of Shepard's father? That would have been interesting.
No, I don't remember Spacer Shepard's father even mentioned. That's a good point, it's probably intentionally left open-ended, so players can speculate Hackett or Zaeed or someone to be their real father. That'd make for some crazy fan fiction.
