How would you have reacted to a totally predictable, undaring, unartistic, paint-by-the-numbers happy ending?

Since I now spend my gaming time expecting "The TWIST", not getting one and actually getting a "paint-by-numbers, predictable" happy ending would have been unexpected and satisfying.

No one would have raged, at least not on this level.
Someone had to put effort to making the ending as bad as it is now.
I am still in AWE over it.

I pretty much thought that's what was going to happen. I was prepared to proclaim it the best ending to the best series of games I'd ever played.
Yeah, pretty much this.

There you go. Non-traditional ending. Thought provoking. And if you don't like that, at least you got a laugh.

Honestly, I'd have been pleasantly surprised. It seems that every game, story, movie, etc. these days has to have "The TWIST". It's gotten to the point that not having one is one if that makes sense.

I like what you said. I don't understand how having the hero sacrificing himself / herself is any more artistic or less cliched than having a happy ending. Why couldn't we have both?

Pull the other one, this should have been out of a range of endings.

A "dark" ending can be just as badly written, hackneyed and superficial as a considerably more upbeat one. Case in point: Mass Effect 3.

I probably would have thought, "Oh, that was a little cliche, ha ha." But it wouldn't have bothered me, and in fact I would have been completely happy and satisfied.

Why? Because a cliche ending probably would have made a lot of sense narratively speaking - logic is he big problem here.

Are there still people who fall for the misconception that "dark and depressing" is the same as "artistic and daring"?

Ouch.
I can't disagree though.

but at least you would have (hopefully) seen some decisions play out, and we would not get this unbelievable feeling of failure thoughout 3 games
