So I have been noticing this pretty much since I started playing multiplayer. But it seems like most of the time the surround sound in Multiplayer doesn't work.
Like you will hear a npc sound, go to it and there is nothing there. Kinda defeats the purpose of surround sound if you can't tell what direction something is.

I guess what I am wondering is has anyone else noticed this or is it maybe just a problem with my system. Or is it a known issue.

Same here. I know it's is bugged but I can't help it and keep following random sounds, it's freaking me out...

Think their official responce was ''5.1 surround is tricky''

Err, no, that's very much not the official response! :)

This is the first I've heard of this issue, surround should work perfectly and we put a lot of effort into ensuring everything sounds great in 5.1. Each sound designer at bioware has their own 5.1 system, it's how we usually play.

So, can you be more specific about the problem? What platform? What scenario and specifically what sounds? Our audio system uses the current system output configuration, so if you have your machine's audio set up wrong then that'll cause issues, and i suspect that's what's going on here.

Thanks!

@Rob Blake, to speak for myself i play on PC, there seems to be no directionality for the sounds.

For example, i could hear an assault trooper to my right at the start of a MP wave but it was actually to my left, this game doesn't take into account the actual position of the npc it just kind of throws the sounds everywhere.

The only issue I notice with the sound is that sometimes at the start of some waves, the "spawn sound" comes from the wrong location, but after this initial sound, everything works perfectly...

I to have noticed the following:

1 - Bullets ricocheting off metal nearby when no one is shooting at me.
2 - enemy noise - grunts/chatter/ect nearby or behind me when no one is there
3 - sometimes I can hear distant fights as if they were right in front of me.

its like some x-files stuff going on!!!

Hmm, seems like the position for new NPC waves could be an issue, the sounds come from the character location but at the moment of spawn perhaps the 'play sound' event triggers before the character actually exists so it doesn't know where to position the sound. I'll keep an ear out for this, but again, i've not heard this issue. Interesting :S

If you're consistently hearing a 'sound comes from the left when it should be on the right' issue then can you please check that your output is set up right. On PC, go to the Sound control panel and click 'configure' on the Playback tab. There should be a sound output test in there and you should hear the sound come from the corresponding speaker when highlighted... every time we've had a problem with this it's actually been that people's speakers/output was set up wrong and they didn't notice until playing the game. If that's working as expected then can you message me your soundcard and any other info and we'll get someone to look at it.

Thanks!

I've had this too - I've ducked into cover at the sound of a high-caliber round spanging nearby, and popped up to discover a completely clear area.

I am on PC and using a 7.1 surround sound headset. My sound is set up proper and I don't have this issue in Single Player.

The specific issue would be the sound at the start of each wave will come from the wrong location which basically means if you don't see where the mobs spawn you have to go on luck... My luck is terrible... lol.

I can go to exactly where the sound is coming from, and when I get there the sound is centered. But there are no mobs. Usually they spawned near where I had been.

I have noticed it on almost all of the original maps not 100% sure on the dlc maps

Not sure if you guys are still looking into this.. I have a Logitech G930, if I am using 7.1 surround sound, then I get wacked out noise positioning, but if I flip the switch on my headset to 5.1 then I hear proper sound positions... Not sure if 7.1 is supported... anyone know?

Im using a Logitech G35 and I also experience hearing enemy sound from false directions.
I turn towards the sound and the enemy is nowhere near but rather in a spawn point across the map.

Im surprised this is still an issue since 3 months.

It's always the case at the start of the wave. As Rob said, the audio is triggered before the characters spawn.

Another issue I hear often is another player's flamer audio coming out of my central speaker, as if I'm the one using the flamer.
