Okay, so I bought a 4 in 1 box set for Baldur's gate with both games and both expansions. (Note: Just before I get into my main problem, I live in the United States, but I bought it off of Amazon. So the game has a pegi rating, not an ESRB rating. So does that mean I have to select UK patch versions when I install patches as opposed to English Verions? Thanks!) Anyway, I have only taken the time to install the 1st BG and have yet to install the expansion packs or BG2. If that as anything to do with the following issue, please note that for me. I can load the game just fine. In fact I can play the game very smoothly except for the occasional points of lag. (Okay not occasional. It happens all of the time, but so far I can deal with my character teleporting.) I am playing on a windows 7 and yes it does have a DVD player, which is a requirement for the 4 in 1.
So, as I was saying, I can play the game. However, I am unable to autosave or just save. Every time I try, my game closes out, and it turns into a black square in the top right corner of my computer and a note says "An Assertion failed in D:\\Dev\\Baldur\\InfGame\\.cpp at line number 5387". I've done this four or five times, with no new reults. I have seen other forums telling me to play on compatablity mode. Nothing new. I tried running it as administrator. Nothing new. I am generally a noob with computers, as I prefer consoles just because of this type of thing: Numbers and letters next to each other that make no flippin sense. Not that I diss PC. I'm playing on one for crying out loud. But still, I have no Idea how to download patches. I feel like a loser just saying that. But please don't get on my case.
So, as you can see, I got way in over my head with a craving for classic BioWare. Please, all I ask of anyone out there is some suggestions on fixing this problem, perhaps a quick guide on Patching PC games for W7, and whether patches need to be downloaded for UK or English because of the Pegi rating and not the ESRB! Thank you!
At LINE NUMBER 5387!! NO!

1. Try uninstalling the game then install it to C:games/BG1... in fact anything but c:program files should fix the problem.
2. Match the patch to the game version as printed in the readme eg. the gog game is Release Version 1.3.5508... I think the uk is Version 1.1.4315 but it's been a while.
p.s. If you want to play the expansion later then install them BEFORE starting your bg1 game.

The above (except the version numbers, for which my 5512 read-me states the below)
1.0.4309 - Full Release - Baldur's Gate
1.1.4312 - Beta Patch - Baldur's Gate
1.1.4315 - Release Patch and Product Revision - Baldur's Gate
1.3.5508 - Full Release - Tales of the Sword Coast
1.3.5512 - Release Patch and Product Revision - Tales of the Sword Coast
& also check what install you did. Select a custom install and tick all the area boxes on the next screen (otherwise the game will try to read off the disk a lot and could be causing the lag you describe. (there is probably a "not enough space on your disk" message too as the installer doesn't recognise modern hard disk sizes).
I would also recommend installing the expansion before starting, same for BG2 and Throne of Bhaal when you get to that point.
Install BG, then TotSC, then the 1.3.5512 TotSC patch (would think the US one, think it relates to the default Operating System language on your computer rather than where the game was purchased, but could be mistaken).
If you dip into the game you may get away without patching. If you are a completionist you will hit the unpatched limit of game variables and any subsequent quests you do will have issues.

Thanks you guys for the suggestions. However, I'm still having some issues with the game. After uninstalling the game like ussnorway suggested, I am attempting to reinstall it. However, now whenever I click the install button on the opening game menu, it runs for ten seconds or so, then it just stops. I cannot get the game to run? Any ideas why?

Try disabling all your other programmes before installing. Some types of virus checker may cause problems as will various browsers and browser add-ons.

Sadly, there is still no new result. I have disabled my antivirus program, but the result remains exactly the same? Anything else from anybody?

Running Windows in safe mode will turn off everything but windows... this should remove any interference to the install option.
p.s. sounds to me like you have google chrome installed?

Vista gives problems when you install games into the Program Files directory.
Files may need to be unblocked in Windows Explorer, they will come from another computer. Right-click key files and check the Properties tab. Make sure they are not write-protected while you are at it. (I doubt this will work.)

You mention that you turned off the virus checker, but didn't say anything about your browser. As ussnorway says Google Chrome can be a source of problems here - did you have that closed as well? If you start in safe mode make sure it's the basic one - not safe mode with networking for instance.

Try running setup.exe from the disk instead of clicking install from the autorun game menu, worked for me when I had the exact same issue (in Vista but expect W7 is the same).

Well thankfully, after running my PC on safe mode as suggested by UssNorway and Grond0, the game has reinstalled, and I am able to save the game smoothly as long as I run on administrator. This is GREAT! Lag is still a bit of an issue, but not my worst problem! Thanks guys so much!!

One trick for lag, it apparently worked for Icewind Gate 2: save, leave the area and come back. Someone posted this at Boards of Magic, in the Icewind Dale 2 sub-forum. Lag concerned was only for certain areas.
