Not only them being -100 to -200 encumberance but, they are only really good in close range, on top of that, 3 or 4 shots before you have to take an hour to reload the dang thing.  Granted you can upgrade, but despite that fact, my load out has always been Assault Rifle and Pistol.  Main weapon and backup in case I ran out of ammo.  Not only does the assault rifle surprisingly way significantly less than the shotgun but great in all aspects of combat, if enemy gets close enough that a shotgun would be preferable, I just melee them so, that brings up the point again, who would use a shotgun opposed to equipping a lighter all around weapon?

With my load out Im 200 + and my powers recharge pretty much automatically and Im spamming concussion shots not giving the enemy a chance..... why oh why would I want a shotgun?  Or Sniper rifle for that matter?

Shotgun works wonders for vanguards and infiltrators in my experience. If you roll infiltrator however, it is best not to bring along a sniper for cooldown purposes; especially since shotgun infiltrators rely on reduced cooldowns not just  to be effective, but  to simply survive on higher difficulties.

In my first playthrough I didn't use one, died quite a few times on hardcore. Now I'm on my insanity run and I'm using the Geth plasma shotgun X and Mattock X. I'm clearing through levels much quicker than I did on hardcore.

The Geth Plasma Shotgun, with auto-choke and barrel extender, is probably one of the most powerful guns around. Short or long distance. About the only thing with more takedown power is the M-98, and then only at long range or when exact target location is required. If your target is not hiding behind something, chances are the Geth Shotgun will take it down faster than any other weapon, especially since aim is not so important. Remember though...you have to hold the trigger down a bit to get it to use 2 rounds (like a BFG). Fast fire mode is not so good. Learn to use it right, and it is the only gun you need (unless you are swarmed and need rapid fire).

If you're in the middle of a mob using heavy melee glues you in place. A shotgun allows you to pop a headshot and keep moving.

If you read what I wrote beyond the title, you'd know...... eh, I chalk this thread up to me saying one thing and everyone, just going to fight me on it.  Suppose if your one whose tactics are run and gun, shotgun would be your choice

Definitely used them.
Last battle with all those Banshees and Marauders swarming, and that huge beast the Reapers have.

Did some cool mid charge combos with it.

I liked the system, but shotguns are unbalanced in that they weigh too much for the limited advantage they bring to the field.

I think the problem wasn't the weight system, it was that it penalized you too much. Weapons giving you cooldowns of 30-40 seconds on powers . . . that's just ridiculous.

I wouldn't have minded being able to go up to say, -100%. This would have made the worst cooldowns around 15 or 16 seconds (less as you upgrade your gear and weapons). Do the same with the bonus (only up to +100%) and you're fine.

ME3 gives you a soldier who has to either rely on guns and use adrenaline rush to save itself, or carry way fewer guns than we've gotten used to. Adepts/Sentinels/Engineers LOVE it, since they get their powers with 1 or 2 second cooldowns. The classes that depend more on their guns. . . well, we kinda get the shaft.

i just use 1 weapon and my sidearm, its a waste to have -110% cooldown if you have another weapon.

Again great decisions Bioware. :(

i just wondered why the talon weighs more then the disciple. the talon should weight alot less then it does.

whats the point of the talon? so i can carry two shotguns??? why not make an assault rifle like shotgun too? or a pistol like sniper rifle.

I found the shotguns to be lacking since ME2-- although there was no weight system there, the damage they inflicted didn't balance out their terrible effective range and slow rate of fire.  The weight penalty in ME3 only makes them worse, in my opinion.

I usually use a sniper rifle, assault rifle, SMG, and pistol on my soldier.  As there's no danger of friendly fire when using the Scorpion or the M-37 Falcon, and both can stagger enemies, shotguns are rather obsolete.  Why use a slow-firing, heavy, inaccurate, and short-ranged gun that doesn't usually do enough damage to put down a target before he moves out of range or into cover again?

My ultimate point was, was the advantages of shotguns worth the drastic increase in weight they caused? I mean granted if you only equipped the shotgun, that wouldn't be an issue, but with the weight equivalent of the Mattock and pistol - having more range, ammunition, and accuracy for the same weight amount seems the better deal. Frankly if they didn't have the weight system at all that would be great too and i'd pull out the shotgun when I needed it.

My other argument being that a shotgun weighs so much for its few advantages of a high powered close range weapon

Shotguns have a higher chance to stun lock, so that may be a reason.

I managed to use Mattock and N7 Crusader on my soldier playthroughs, with about -82% weight

My only playthrough was a imported soldier. I was forced to only pick Assault Rifle and Sniper Rifle and I had +15% charge bonus.
If I wanted to pick a SMG or Pistol, I would get a fail status of -30% ~ -60%. Shotgun was more than -100% fail.

I used the GPS on my Vanguard, charged it could one shot most enemies at medium range, and you can charge it while standing behind cover so unlike the auto weapons you don't have to stand there getting shot at while you kill a target. At close range you use the regular shots and it works great. On insanity one clip is enough to take out a Brute, a Harvester or a Ravager or without shields an Atlas or Geth Prime.

In my experience the assault rifles and SMGs are the weak weapons. With the difficulty charges from ME2 (enemies have fewer defenses, but do more damage and reaquire targets faster) you want weapons that kill quickly so that you minimize your out of cover time. That makes the shotgun and sniper rifle the kings of ME3. Granted the level layouts make the game a sniper's paradise.

It depends on how you play. I have a feeling that most people who play vanguards basically stick to Biotic Charge, Nova, Shotgun, for most of the game. For these people they don't need more than just a shot gun.

Granted I played a sentinel, and mostly stuck with powers, though I did carry an ultra-light SMG and a pistol.

lol, never used a shotgun. if they come close to me i just use the melee attack. a strong assault rifle does just fine.
