Eh, MP? Yeah, I use them on my Krogan's.

SP? I roll with an AR And SR almost every time.

Yeah, I kinda wish that all classes of gun had a ultralight materials mod, and not just SMGs.  That way if you really wanted to use the gun, but hated that it weighed a ton, you could still use a mod slot and reduce the weight.  That way you could carry more than two weapons (three if two are sidearms) and still have an okay cooldown.  I feel like the mod slot tradeoff is fair for what you get.

But yeah, I've been playing a Soldier, and I haven't found a use for shotguns, really.  It seems like only Vanguards and Infiltrators get any real use out of them, in my experience.

I only need an assault rifle. I bring a particle rifle and that's it.

I only use the Geth Shotgun with my Vanguard; I only really use it if I'm up against strong opponents like Banshees and Harvesters that are silly to try and charge.

Not only them being -100 to -200 encumberance but, they are only really good in close range, on top of that, 3 or 4 shots before you have to take an hour to reload the dang thing.

What. Did you upgrade them AT ALL? The Disciple V (i.e. max lvl for a not-New-Game-Plus) has +187%. That's lighter than most pistols, and while it's hilariously short-ranged, it makes for a very efficient panic button if you're swarmed. With the lack of missile launchers as carriable pickups in SP, it's a boon to any class.

The weight system makes it interesting for multiplayer and leads you to create "gun" and power based classes. I like it for this reason. It also encourages new playthroughs.

My Soldier didn't mind being at -200%. The only active power i used was AR. Wasn't a big deal.

My Sentinel used a Graal Spike Thrower, which is just amazingly fun. IIRC, I used the choke mod so the range was respectable. She stayed at over +100% for powers with a pistol and ultralight SMG as back up.

My Engineer used a pistol, Assault Rifle, and SR. Didn't need a shotgun when Defense Drone kept everyone back anyway.

I will admit that the weapons could use a balance pass. Many of them had weights all out of proportion to their effectiveness. Either that, I I was missing something useful about them. Found this issue with ARs more than Shotguns, though.

Yeah what weapons you used REALLY depends on your playstyle. As it is I've ofound NO bad combo of weapons.

I used Shotguns and snipers for my sentinel, balanced out just right with the right armor pieces where cooldown was not an issue.

I used Snipers and SMGs for my Infiltrator builds, My engineer builds used ARs and Shotguns, and my Adept used Snipers and SMGs too.

So it all depends, on how you play a certain class. But I am partial to the n7 crusader shotgun and Geth Plasma shot gun when I get them

It all depends on character type and play style. No one gun fully weighed your character down, so if you wanted a shotgun and a lightweight pistol, you'd be fine. For me, the limited number of rounds was a deterrent. The Raptor sniper rifle, N7 Eagle pistol and/or the Hornet smg leave me with between +140% and +160% recharge.

Well no, but I have NEVER used a shotgun in ME1 and ME2 as well. It is a totaly pointless weapon in all three games imho.

But I really like the weight system. I was really tired going to a battle behanged like a christmas tree with weapons I will never use. In ME3, as a soldier, I pick up an assault rifle and go. No need to carry pistol, shotgun or sniper rifle as well.

I'm going to be honest, I still think the weight system is stupid, it encourages using one weapon and spamming biotics, there is minimal advantage to having two weapons, and even with one, playing pure caster with carnifex or some other pistol makes the game much easier.

The Geth Plasma Shotgun, with auto-choke and barrel extender, is probably one of the most powerful guns around. Short or long distance. About the only thing with more takedown power is the M-98, and then only at long range or when exact target location is required. If your target is not hiding behind something, chances are the Geth Shotgun will take it down faster than any other weapon, especially since aim is not so important. Remember though...you have to hold the trigger down a bit to get it to use 2 rounds (like a BFG). Fast fire mode is not so good. Learn to use it right, and it is the only gun you need (unless you are swarmed and need rapid fire).

Agreed, its one of the best weapons at close range, the shells do travel quite slower but the concussive impact on targets gives enough time to get another shot in, the cartridge load of 5 shots before reloading is also enough to down at least 2 targets.  The Geth Plasma shotgun is best for Sentinels and Vanguards, and its the only gun I carry for both character class.

"A big gun and a confident attitude will get you through a lot in life."

As a sentinel, I've grown to appreciate a Sabre/Carni/Locust combo. My super lightweight SMG doesn't get much use, but it is a comfort to know it's there. Still get around +160% power recharge and I'm carrying an arsenal. :)

I do go back to the Tempest as the SMG from time to time. I like the RoF and huge shot count before ejecting for a fresh thermal. Made better by the mod that boosts it even more. The 80% reduction in weight mod makes carrying an SMG easy.

If weight is the issue, go with the Disciple shotgun. With Incendiary ammo it wreaks havoc =P I agree with the OP to a certain extent though. I never equip a shotgun unless I'm playing vanguard.

First time I rolled an Infiltrator. Spec'ed him in CC and went with the Graal Spike Thrower as soon as I could get it. And nothing else.

Next time it was a Vanguard. Graal Spike Thrower... And nothing else.

Next time an Adept. Graal Spike Thrower... nothing else.

Next time a Sentinel.... The Spike Thrower only.

You see where this is going, right?

Don't really think the system is flawed as such, just that for what they bring to the table, shotguns are too heavy. It would have been nice to have a "sawed-off shotgun" type of weapon with slightly less oooomph for a close quarters backup, or a way to reduce their weight, like what the already light SMG got. In fact, that'd have been nice on all the guns, and arguably make more sense as something you'd want to have researched for heavier weapons in the first place.

I actually liked the weight system. It made it possible to "rp" a little. You dont carry guns you dont need an that you arent profecient with. However given the lacklustre small unit tactics, the barrel rolls, and that I found the AI dumber than ME2 once again it was a case of "one step forward, ten backwards". Counterproductive.

if you already have a poweful gun, adding a powerful shotgun to that arsenal is of course going to kill cooldown time.
I kill troops with my evicerator shotgun (choke, damage, incendiary ammo) from close to mid range with one shot. I find it super useful. Then I pick a weapon for long range for back up (so not the most powerful weapon)

on my vanguard: eviscerator lv5, geth pulse rifle lv5 = 99% cooldown

add 20% cooldown on Liara's upgrade terminal. add another 20% for armour build. ( just over 1/3 of my points are in cooldown's btw.. the rest goes into shield, weapon damage, power dmg)

That = 140% cooldown. Not bad.

Infiltrator. viper/ Raptor+disciple lv 5, Doesn't eat too much into cooldown either.
But if you pick a widow, then you might want to have a submachine gun instead,

Yeah, its like the best weapon for a ton of builds? What the hell have you been using, lol.

If you read what I wrote beyond the title, you'd know...... eh, I chalk this thread up to me saying one thing and everyone, just going to fight me on it.  Suppose if your one whose tactics are run and gun, shotgun would be your choice

We read what you wrote...

It's quite viable to get 200% cooldowns with a shotgun on most classes (Disciple is an especially good shotgun for that). Some shotguns have quite large magazines (katana, scimitar); like any weapon class personal preference and combat strategy comes into it, finding something that suits you.

I'm guessing from your writing that you are a soldier or something in which case it's understandable, it's difficult to close the distance to bring the weapon to bear and shotguns are elss useful to you. But for an infiltrator or vanguard, closing range is a trivial exercise (stealth or charge respectively); vanguard strategy is as you describe "hit and run". Rush in, blow some heads off, and then duck behind while you reload and find a new weak spot in the enemy line to jam the wedge into.

I played an Infiltrator with Shotgun (with barrel choke), SMG and Sniper. Later because of the sniper weight only shotgun and sniper. I had a power recharge bonus and could cover all ground with my weapons. Cloak + Shotgun works wonders.

The system is great, as it allows you to customize your loadout more according to your playstyle.

on levels like sur'ukesh I don't even have to close the distance with charge. Eviscerator + smart choke+damage bonuses/or armour piercing+ incendiary ammo will kill troops with one hit when firing from the hip from mid to close distance. Maybe at mid distance you aim just to be sure.

Or the Brutes at the end of Tuchunka or on Earth. Sometimes the shotgun is by far the most effective weapon.

It also means pooping out of cover for a lot shorter a time when cover fighting mid range enemies.

Other times I cloak and flank or charge into a biotic explosion and one shot staggered troops around me.

I underated shotguns before playing my second playthrough with the vanguard class instead of infiltrator

I had 3 weapons and it was fine. A biotic concentrating on biotics rather than heavy weapons makes a lot of sense imo and is just one of many ways to play.
The system is good and much better than having a whole army you didn't need strapped to your back.

The problem I have with shotguns is I for one use widow as default for all my characters as main weapon. It has slow reload time and singular round per reload. Most shotguns also have very limited ammo and reload required so often which leads to the meantime of standing around takng hits when swarmed. So these days I try to use widow + a rapid fire high ammo / less reload combination. With vanguards and sentinals so quick to rush off and get themselves killed I tend to stick with infiltrator or engineer class for myself to clear up the mess they leave behind.

You can have a shotgun as a vanguard and still have +195% recharge speed.
Also, it's a good idea, just badly done for soldier/soldier hybrid classes. They should have a lot more weight capacity from the start. It's sometimes annoying to just be able to carry 2 weapons depending on which you carry as a soldier.
