Having always played a soldier, I refused to pack myself with any less fire power than in previous games. So I played on Insanity with a massively nerfed cooldown, I made it though.
So yes, I did use a shotgun.

Yeah, my Vanguard did early on, but I only started carrying one frequently once I gained access to the (much-lighter) Disciple.

Shotguns are my favorite, so I use them a lot. The weight system could get annoying at times, but I always have so much fun with the shotguns, my time was half spent on shooting and half on powers. This is with a Sentinel, by the way.

Same here. On New Game+ after upgrading all the weapons it's much better though.

The weight system is very stupid. For exaple, being a soldier now is pointless to have powers, cuz they take up to 20 seconds to recharge if you run all weapons except SMG like in ME 2 and 1. Whoever thought of the system needs to be dragged out in the streets and shot.

I did this too, but it was annoying not having my adrenaline rush and conccussive shot.

Don't like Shotguns in this game. Don't think i'll ever warm up to them, but for whatever reason there seem to be so many of them.

Maybe soldiers should have had less of a penalty for weight but overall the weight system is good and much better than the alternative where the only reason to use weapons other than the ones you like was because you ran out of ammo.

If they would hae done something for the soldiers, say a skill tree for reducing weight penalties, that would have been fine, or hell, just nullify the weight issue for soldiers, but they didnt. Which makes playing as a soldier just frustrating. Even as an adept, if you use any other pistol aside from the default pistol, your powers are slowed down too much to be the biotic warrior that wins battles without firing a shot. And secondly, there is not supposed to be AMMO in mass effect, it should hae stayed like ME 1 where if you fire too fast you overheat, THEN if you have heat syncs you can eject them and keep firing, and when you run out you have to pace your shots. The whole ammo business is just silly.

I love my boomstick. I use the Eviscerator with extra ammo capacity and extended barrel, which goes along with either my M98 or (forgot the name of the first super accurate sniper rifle you get before the Viper), also with ammo capacity upgrade and extended barrel.

I finish my equipping with that pistol that acts like the Arc Projector. Either that or the one that comes with the laser sight on it stock. I'm so sorry about my inability to remember the names! Anyway, what I shoot at goes down quickly. I'm a good shot so almost everything I do with the Widow results in a headshot, even skimming a bullet into the top of someone's head while it's behind cover. I get a lot of headshots with the shotgun too, but no matter where I hit, it causes them to go reeling which is often just what I need. Half of what I use is to keep people at enough distance so I can use the controls without someone on top of me.

I play a vanguard btw. In ME2, the one time I tried as an Infiltrator, I felt naked without my shotgun and heavy charge and relied way too much on the sniper rifle, meaning I was confused and helpless when people got close. I'll never go without again, as fun as running around naked can be!

Eh, I beg to differ when I pretty much went throughout the game ever using a sniper rifle, shotgun, or machine pistol when there were few occasions when they may have come in handy, just so I can get a decent power recharge rate.  As some stated, class specific weapon equipment like in ME 2 would have been preferred

I play as a Soldier class in SP, so weight issues don't bug me as much. So, I always take a shotgun for close quarters battle.

This person clearly has never used a vanguard.

Shotgun was the only thing I carried around in ME3 as a vanguard. No weight issue.

Pick target, charge, nova, shotgun em' all, melee if necessary, rinse and repeat. I pretty much owned Insanity like that.

If you haven't been using the GRAAL all the time, you're playing the game WRONG.

My winning combination of a Sabre and a Wraith says otherwise. With both fully upgraded to level 10 and a cooldown bonus of 96% it's the sniper rifles and pistols that become obsolete.

No, no I haven't.  but that's "one" class it's specially good for, not much of an all around weapon

Nope.

Have played the game through exactly once. ( thanks to the abortion of an ending ).

That was as a Vanguard and I only ever used an assault rifle with ammo capacity mods.

It was the only weapon I ever needed and once I got the Prothian rifle ( The mission for which I saved up untill Ashley was in my party ) I didn't even have to worry about finding ammo.

I was soldier on insanity and I ran with crusader + vindicator. +20% recharge time. spent more time with the crusader than i did with the vindicator. it was more of a PDW. i plan on going adept for my renegade shep, hopefully i can carry the same loadout

The weight system is mostly fine, I'd still add a little bit more weight capacity to all classes and reduce the weight of some weapons (crusader, arc pistol and some others).

The main problem IMO is that people have a hard time making balanced loadouts.

btw the crusader is more of a heavy pistol, not really a typical shotgun due to firing only slugs, used like that it can be extremely effective.
