How would you rate the new members of the Normandy Bioware introduced in Mass Effect 3?
In the run to release there was quite a bit ot debate about some of the new characters, and about whether or not they belonged on the team. Javik and Vega in particular got a lot of hate from the fanbase. I'm curious about how you all feel about them now, and where you'd rank them compared to all the other characters who have served on the Normandy since the first game.
Javik - In the run up to release I wasn't too ethusiastic about the news that there was going to be a Prothean squadmate. I couldn't have cared less about the Day 1 DLC controversy, but at the time I thought the writers were better off keeping the Protheans dead as a sort of lesson for Shepard on the price of failure. On that count I was dead wrong. I think Javik is easily one of the best characters in the entire series, and his little anecdotes on the Prothean extinction worked far better as a 'lesson' for Shepard than finding ruins or data pads. He also has some of the best dialogue in the game. While his more comedic lines get more attention from the fanbase, I think his best lines are the ones that are also some of the most poignant in the entire series:
"War is our sculptor. And we are prisoners to its design."
"It was the day I understood. War is atrocity committed in the name of survival. It is a lesson I wish I had never learned."
Vega - I was pleasantly suprised with Vega. I wasn't too crazy about his character design, and was expecting another Jacob, but he turned out to be my favorite of the human squadmates so far. Freddie Prinze Jr did a bang up job with his voice acting, and I loved his back and forth banter with both Garrus and Cortez. He also has some funny lines during missions if you bring him along. In fact I'd rather we had him on the squad since Mass Effect 1, and Kaidan was the new guy in ME3.
Traynor - I didn't have any opinion on her prior to release, because the only things I knew about her was that her name was Traynor and that she'd be replacing Kelly Chambers. After having played the game however, I like her a lot more than Kelly Chambers. Part of I think is the writing, in that Bioware wanted to give her a bigger role in the story than Kelly Chambers had. One of the criticisms of Chambers was that she didn't have much of a role aboard the Normandy besides telling Shepard when people wanted to talk to him, or when he had email. Bioware obviously tried to correct that this time around by making Traynor more plot relevant. My only criticism is that she gives Shepard more intel than the Shadow Broker, but that is more a flaw in how Liara was utilized by the writers than in how Traynor was written. Oh, and I love Traynor's voice acting.
Cortez - Like Traynor I didn't really know enough about him prior to release to have an opinion on him one way or the other. I thought he was a decent character overall however, and I loved his back & forth banter with Vega. I also think Bioware handled him being a homosexual romance option the right way, in that he respects Shepard's boundaries if Shep is heterosexual, and in that Shepard has the option of being friendly or professional with him without getting ninjamanced. They could have very easily made the same blunder DA2 did, where friendly dialogue was the romance path, and the only way to avoid it was being a douche.
