Suppose I liked the sweet Liara of Mass Effect 1 so much that the cold fish Liara of ME 2 and 3 just didn't appeal to me

It sure is, in story terms.

In design terms it's a really bad move to saddle people with a character they don't like and find boring and not give them a choice in the matter. Especially when that character's no longer essential to the plot. Moreso when they keep propping that character up as your closest friend/lover/whatever.

What? Forcing? She was my LI throughout my paragon Shep, and in ME3, she seemed so distant.

I don't recall Liara forcing herself on me in 3? Hell, she was my LI from 1, faithful to her through 2, and I found myself having to push my Shep on her, not the other way around. You have to specifically tell her "more than friends" late in the game to get anywhere. Rest of the game is basically "Hello Shepard." Not really sure how a greeting is forcing her on me?

Asari are naturally a lot more free with their displays of affection/sexuality.  They are not prudes like humans are.

If women would tell you exacty how they feel, there would be a lot less divorces in the world...:D....

I like it.

Humans need to stop thinking that other species should act like us.  No wonder aliens hated us in the beginning....

This thread is talking about those who DIDN'T romance her. We practically have to beat her off with a stick - she's like a stalker, who just will not go away.

well, its just like Tali, when you start to talk to her in ME2, you find that she has been stalking you since she met you on the Citadel 3 years ago....but just real quite about it. NM I guess, we are talking about Liara.

Actually, I wanted to draw a parallel here and forgot. Anyone remember that human woman and asari in the citadel? The woman thinks the asari loves her and is about to divorce her soldier husband.

I've played one ME3 playthrough where Ashley was my LI, and subsequent ones where Tali was my LI. On the ones where Tali was my LI, the "we could be more than friends" option was not available, neither was the one that commits to Ashley (curiously, the eye candy comment with Steve was still available, though I politely reminded him I liked the ladies). So I'm not sure where she forces herself on you.

The fact that she brings Shepard back from the dead doesn't necessarily mean she's the favored LI; Willow was never romantically involved with Buffy, and Kirk was never romantically involved with Spock. That's what the goodbye sequence in London reminded me of, a Vulcan mind meld (which can be intimate, but not necessarily). If BW saw her as the canon LI, then wouldn't she be your default LI if you don't incorporate a save (pretty sure nobody is, that way it doesn't look like you're uncharacteristically switching teams if you pick Sam or Steve).

I haven't played ME3 with Liara as my LI yet, but this is really more of a save file transfer issue, I ended up losing the ME2 saves where she was my LI when I performed maintenance on my hard drive, so I'll have to restart ME2 from the beginning if I want an ME3 where Liara is romanced and Eve lives (the aforementioned ME2 saves I lost were also the only ones where I saved Maelon's data.) How's that for rotten luck?

Because some people are so cold they don't even want her as a friend, even though she's responsible for you being alive at all, and does nothing but help.

Statements like this bug me to no end.

Feron + Miranda + Cerberus + Mountain of Gold & Credits = Shepard being alive again.
All Liara did was act like an angry blue Hulk and throw biotics around like a mad powerhouse all the while posing provocatively (I know, artist's choice, but spirits...) and yelling "Shepard" every other page. She was a part of it but she was far from "essential".

So yes, my Shepard would very much like to thank Feron for the ACTUAL effort involved in saving her - finding her body first.

Same people who never once spoke to Cortez because "I don't want him to sex me up!".

The best is how in ME1 you can specifically tell her "I just want to be a friends, brah" to her.

Male or female Shepard, Cortez is one delightful pilot.

You could also say you found her "disgusting" in true renegade fashion. Not very nice, but the point is: there was a choice to do that.

Uh, I didn't romance her in any of the games and I feel pretty neutral about her. But I certainly didn't feel like she was forcing herself on me. If anything, her friendship is a little forced on you but I didn't mind this, as she was a major character in the series. But as far as romance, she actually specifically tells you at one point that she wants to be friends, and you have to say something like "I want more than that" if you want to romance her.

The Renegade option to reject her in ME1 is bugged (never knew about it until ME2 was released). She ended up being registered as the LI for 2 of my Shepards (one male, one female) because I did not know about the bug.

When the locker scene happened for my femShep (my third character), I just said the heck and decided to just keep her romance. Not for my poor Sheploo though (my first run), I rejected her at the locker scene and before Ilos. And I never realized that she was still considered the LI until ME2 when her picture appeared at the cabin. For these 2 cases, Kaidan is the VS for my Sheploo and Ash for my femShep. So I can't do the "just choose the VS and cancel her romance."

The only time I've ever escaped from her romance is because my second (and later canon) Shep dates Kaidan in ME1... So yeah I do feel that Liara is being forced as the LI... blame the bug I guess?

Not sure about this forcing thing in ME3 though because I just made sure to lock in the desired LI before I talked to anybody else. Although the amount of content that she gets (i.e: locked as a party member is the highest compared to the other squaddies).

If we even think about insulting her, Mac gets blood pressure and would go on a krogan rage. Liara's forced friendship is the worse. You can ignore Tali and Garrus. But Liara has to come with you for 3 missions, comes to your cabin twice without your permission and has some kind of personality disorder where sometime she's the scared weak girl or the tough badass girl. Not to mention her ****** size increased hugely in ME3. But the worst crime was when Bioware made me have flashbacks about her instead of Tali.

I just miss the original Liara, the geeky one.

Furthermore her facial details were changed so many times, she doesn't even look attractive in ME3 (for me at least). In ME1 she looked best, and in ME2 when you meet her. After Shadow Broker she looks too weird with blue eyes and too much makeup

One of my Sheps didn't romance anyone before ME3, and like many others I found myself very surprised when Aethyta adressed him as "boyfriend" instead of "human commander".

Thats has to be an import glitch like with conrad verner.

Miranda's contributions actually outweigh Liara's.

Stop kidding. She wasnt even the main scientific mind in the project(that was Wilson/she was just some kind of manager) and she never put her life at risk to get shepard remains.

She hasnt any contributions to outweight anything.

Liara was never in danger. Either Feron kept pulling her out of harm's way or she blasted her way through the oposition like a biotic god of destruction. Liara was a decoy, a front, for TIM to get to Shadow Broker and find out WHY the Collectors wanted Shepard's body in the first place.

Liara being the "pet character" did her no favors.

Someone,not matter how skillfull/powerfull he/she is,always take a risk by getting into a firefight...

Thats like saying that shepardt wasnt in any danger/dont take any risks because his enemies were defeated at the end anyway...

No.  This is a bug.  There is dialogue that doesn't refer to Shepard as Liara's boy/girlfriend, but for some reason it doesn't seem to fire for people.

It fired for me. Aethyta was talking how Liara is single etc.
