I do it as it allows me to make two different builds and try them out.  I have a male and female engineer that I bounce between for instance as I built them each a bit differently.

Freedom of choice and play style, honestly. Some people do not come to games (SP and MP) with the real-life mindset of 'I gotta play my own sex, cuz that is what I am.' They come to the table wantint to roleplay, or to have a character that they want to see on the screen. One of my good friends (a dude) likes playing ladies in MP because he likes strong lady characters and watching them rock hard on screen is enjoyable. Another friend of mine (a lady) likes playing dudes in MP because she likes making elaborate backstories for them and roleplays and finds the human dudes cuter.

It is what it is. I come to the table playing nearly everything, alien and human, and male and female. I use my human ladies more often, but it's personal preference. I want to see more action heroines that aren't sexualized and running around in skimpy bikini armors, and that's an outlet for me.

And hey, if we all stuck to playing our own genders, ladies would be horribly SOL with their only choices being Quarians and Asari (and Human Ladies), while dudes get everything else.

In my humble oppion I would suggest that those see some sort of deviance in guys playing as female characters in a game mode where gender has literally no practical imlications or inherant sexual content ask themselves why they see some sort of deviance?

Put simply the male and female characters don't act differently, they don't have inherantly male or female traits and their is no element of social interaction in mass effect multiplayer, you just run around and shoot things.

It is simply a skin, an collection of pixels or whatever that the player moves around the screen with the aim of shooting bad guys, there is not sexual or gender based difference in whether that collection of pixels has boobs or not, the person that "would feel like a cross dresser" had introduced that element of percieved deviance from themselves.

Usually spec the human male for damage/melee, and the human female for health/survivability. As someone who has never promoted and probably never will, this beats using respec tokens on human characters.

 The only human I play is infiltrator (and not even so much now that I have the Geth). My SP character since ME1 has been femshep infiltrator. I've beaten Insanity on ME1 and ME2 with femshep infiltrator (I would do ME3 Insanity, but I can't bring myself to play that ****ty SP again even though the completionist in me screams for it).

It would just feel wrong to go male all of a sudden. Maybe I'll deploy him as a Claymore inf though.

I usually upgrade the Male and Female characters for different things. For example, I could have a Weight Capacity Male Soldier and a Weapon Damage Female Soldier

I only play female if its a different build(Like I have an AR spamming soilder, and a female conc shot spammer) or when playing a vanguard. The Female vanguard's grunts sound better than the males.

I only used the females in certain classes because I had all of the appearance options unlocked for some of them and not the male version, but now I hardly use humans at all.

Females of all shapes and sizes are aesthetically appealing to me. This is a simple fact, and it's why I play females in most games, including Mass Effect. But not in multiplayer, because I pretty much only play Geth and Krogan at this point. Sometimes Salarian. And Asari vanguard too.

This is the most ridiculous post. I play male and female characters for no particular reason, I just play both because - I don't know, I don't even think twice about it. Who cares? Honestly people need to get a grip of their sexuality.

Damn, still going? More flaming my question, pfft.
I did not play WoW or any of that nonsense, so I am new to this. I was used to guys identifying themselves as such and females identifying themselves as female. Browsing the Bioware forums should have given me a clue (all the guys with Liara avatars and the like), not sure why I didn't pick up on that, I noted my mistake and moved on about 7 pages ago.

Female Vanguard and Asari Adept are my two most played classes. I play FV (wearing pink, no less) because she mirrors my favorite Shepard and I play AA because setting off Biotic Explosions is so much fun.

I've been questioned about it (the Vanguard) a few times but it doesn't bother me.

Haha, actually tried the Asari Vanguard not too long ago. Very useful hit-and-run character. Fitness is a must or they get eaten alive, a defensively-specced vanguard is very good at typing up a large group of enemies and not dying (assuming there are no banshees involved!). The suckers just don't die.

And yea, only about 4 people asked "Why are you looking at their butts? Kill things!" Interesting that this thought process is relatively rare.
Even more rare is the idea "I don't need to get my fill of women from a game".

Fascinating... but then again, there are TONS of people that use Oblivion and Skyrim mods for wanking purposes.
But, that's slightly off topic.

This has been an interesting "social experiment".
