The Crucible is a necessary and completely acceptable plot device. You may not like it, but its a hell of a lot better than Shepard and Garrus riding into the Mother Reaper and infecting it with a computer virus to disable the Reapers shields.
The fact that the Crucible needs to be built first over several months by every single species engineers using an unfathomably large number of resources and like 1000 trillion credits makes it not a Deus Ex Machina per definition.
The problem with the Crucible was that its function was apparently invented by the Catalyst, which is bullcrap.
Actually it's identical to riding into the Mother Reaper and infecting it with a computer virus. Only with more coloured lights.
You can strip away the Deus Ex Machina label, you can't strip away the fact that it is an 'I WIN' button, which is the laziest and crappiest way to resolve any kind of situation, and a blatant sign of lacking creativity.

I think the problem was they didn't represent the Thannix Cannons properly in the fleet. >.>.
That's the problem that sane people have. If that's your only problem then by all means continue complaining about how Bioware failed to properly reflect the strength of the combined forces in Mass Effect 3's cutscenes.
If, on the other hand, you want lots of small plot devices to take the place of one giant plot device, then my post applies.

Or, it means that it's hard to use them effectively. I believe the 4 ships overheating Reaper shields thing is a reference to 4 dreadnaughts doing this by firing all at once. There are probably about 80 dreadnaughts in the galaxy, total, before the war begins, and we see a bunch of them get blown up early in the game.
And in any fight where you lose with less than 4:1 ration...you're not going to fare well. Reapers don't need 4 shots to destroy the strongest alliance vessels, nor do they need to concentrate fire. From what we see, 1 shot pretty much does it. The infatuation with Thanix Cannons as miracle weapon is bizarre.
I'm pretty sure it's because people don't like what the Crucible plot device turned out to be. In particular, they hate the idea of complying with a genocidal monster computer taking the form of a certain brat. I don't blame them for this, as the brat is terrible, and Bioware is going to have a very hard time clarifying how he's not a giant plot hole that ME1 fell into.
One of the reactions to Mr. Starbrat is to say we don't need the Crucible at all. But if that's the case, we need something more than we have, unless we live in total denial of the plot. The people who can't go into total denial grasp for Thanix Cannons.

It is also not a MacGuffin. If you replaced it with a giant pile of Thanix Cannons, the way certain people want to, the whole plot would have to change, most notably the ending. Which is why people are so obsessed with this idea.

- The codex tells us that ships can FTL behind Reapers, turn before a Sovereign can bring it's guns to bear and pound them.
- The codex tells us thanix cannons are far more effective against Reaper barriers than mass accelerators.
Knowing this, cruiser and frigate squads FTLing behind Reaper lines and shooting down Sovereigns before they can fire back should be possible. We should be seeing these tactics, and they should lead to victory.

But seriously, my beef with them is if they're so "widespread", why couldn't bioware spare some resources animating them in at least one fleet engagement we see in the whole game?
