A lot of the space "breathers" don't make any sense...

Anybody else find this annoying? I lol'd when Miranda and liara had some glass piece over their mouth...But nothing on their eyes...in space. I was like https://encrypted-tb...YsYo5QHBpqS4cGy

Ya, that's one of the few things that irks me quite a bit. I think it was something that Bioware thought would actually make things less confusing for people(in terms of squad member identification) but it makes things a bit more confusing. Part of the reason why I don't like the Me2 squad as much aswell

it does seem a bit weird but then i just think they probably have a mass effect field to keep the air in, but then again why would they need a mask?

Space Magic. The ME universe is swamped with it.

Although its only with some squadmates though, Garrus and Grunt both have actual helmets

Always wished there was an option for Shepard to have a simple re-breather rather than a helmet regardless of of the realities of the vacuum of space!

Mass Effect fields, the answer to everything.

I miss it in ME1 where everyone had serious helmets. :/

So...where are they truly "in space" as in a vacuum? I think they are not. Never. It's rather an atmosphere with low or no 02, thus a breather would work.

And of course ME-fields. ^^ They work.

If I had to choose between bulky armor with mostly the same models and just different textures plus a bulky helmet that blocks the face almost entirely on the one hand, and personal armor design and visible face in cutscenes on the other, with a explanation that makes sense in the ME universe...I'd always go for the second.

Agreed. Was designing and implenting actual helmets a difficult and arduous task or something in the last two games?

Actually, in ME3, all your squaddies have the option of wearing a full armor set with sealed helmets.

Liara doesn't. Javik doesn't even wear a helmet, ever.

It irked a lot of people in ME2 as well. Beats the crap out of me why they didn't do anything about it. Same as the full body suits being able to remove the helmet - also a huge grievance.

One could argue that the Asari physilogy allows Liara to adapt to low or high pressure enviroments better than humans, such as Mars. Doesn't explain Miranda though.

Space pretty much means the exact opposite of what you think it does.

EDIT1: For the record, the only time someone has been exposed to 'space' vacuum wearing a breather in the MEverse is in ME2, after the IFF mission, and that's only for a second, if you brought specific squaddies with you, and if you accept that the atmosphere of the red giant is actually so lacking of density at that point, that it has to be considered as space. Which is debatable.

EDIT2: If you have problems with the actual function of breathers in the MEverse, never play any UNC missions with Tali again. Ever.

They're never in space, only Shepard ever goes into space during the docking tube sequence. They only use their breathers in low oxygen places like Mars and the Geth Dreadnaught.

However, some squadmates have alternate appearances in which they have eye pieces and the game counts those as helmets. I WTF'd when I saw Ashley on the Geth Dreadnaught with a chinless version of the Delumcore Overlay that comes with her CE alternate outfit.

In the case of Miranda, her hair looking perfect is much more important than decompression.

The weird thing is that the human characters all have helmets but Liara doesn't.

My guess is that since Asari heads are shaped differently, Bioware didn't want to bother creating a unique helmet for Liara and just slapped on the breathing mask.

Mars has NO oxygen whatsoever, and there would be no benefit to having oxygen on the Geth Dreadnought since they don't even breathe.

Semantics. My point still stands. They were not in a vacuum therefore wearing only breathers is acceptable.

The main problem with the breathers is that they look lame.

There is no atmosphere inside the geth dreadnought, nor the geth space station in ME2. There's no reason for there to be any atmosphere there, since geth do not breathe, and atmosphere would only corrode components.
