A lot of the space "breathers" don't make any sense...

Are you absolutely sure they did not do any terraforming on Mars in the ME-universe?

Even if they did, there are plenty of areas in ME2/3 that these heelmets are not viable, but still used. And I'd bet my left testicle Bioware would've used these helmets in ME1 too, if they had thought of them back then.

Congratulations. You have found a flaw in our otherwise absolutely scientifically accurate game. ;)

your own Mac Walters said it best

"'From very early on we wanted the science of the universe to be plausible. Obviously it's set in the future so you have to make some leaps of faith but we didn't want it to be just magic in space"

I'm cool with slight missteps, like some of our fellow fans who tend to know quite a bit about space pointed out a few errors in planet descriptions, blah blah, no big deal. But even my eight year old nephew knows you can't just walk out into space without viable protection. I understand there are certain leaps for futuristic games/stories like FTL speeds, which is great, when posed in the way Mass Effect did it, it is BELIEVABLE for the setting. These helmets are the equivalent of somebody putting a tree in a glass dome, and living under the ocean with it. Yeah, I just compared Mass Effects believablility on this subject to Spongebob.

well that was my point tho

i agree with you

yes b/c when they stepped outside during the Mars mission, Shepard, Ashley, James, Liara all wore helmets and rebreathers

Wow the breather mask/unarmored argument returns. Are the forums going back to normal or something? (Unlikely in Mordin's voice)

How is a breather mask that doesn't even cover the eyes or ears enough protection in an environment where 95% of the atmosphere is CO2 and the mean temperature is -60 degrees Celcius? I thought krogan were the ones who could handle those kinds of temperature extremes, not asari?

Im enjoying topics that arent about the ending or EMS ratings. Those got boring 3 weeks ago.I had temporarily moved to the Multiplayer forums, but thats got it's own set of repeat threads.

Just bring the squadmates who are smart enough to wear proper helmets. Problem solved.

yes, i am absolutely sure that Mars did NOT have any terraforming in the ME-universe b/c when Shepard and co. stepped outside, they had helmets and Liara had her rebreather mask

Cool, dramatic scenes can still be achieved with people in helmets. You just have to be a little more creative. I'd say creativity is a prerequisite for people whose career is making video games, no?

Agreed. Sound doesn't travel in space but I'm okay with the cool sounding Star Wars sound effects.

Oh gee, I on't get to choose my squadmates for many missions, I'm forced to take them along. Both ME2 and ME3.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. lightsabers actually have an explanation in the lore, making them believable. I'm not even a star wars nerd and I know they have reasoning behind it.

I can handle the mass effect.
I can handle sound in space.
I can handle spaceships flying like airplanes.
I can handle a dreadnought in the atmosphere.
I can handle MagicGel.
I can handle distorting space-time with your mind.
I can handle a bar and a launge on a military ship.
I can handle a lot of other things that I can't remember...

But Starchild and the masks broke my immersion.

In ME1, I always turned my / my squad-mate's helmets on or off based on whether or not I was expecting combat in the near future. I always thought it looked cool when you are about to attack chora's den or something, and everybody "suits up" with the helmet completing their armor.

I'm sorry, but the "breather" things don't exactly look like it's badass go-time. IMO everybody should have an actual helmet, which is always worn if you turn helmets to on. The breather type things should be what people wear in non-breathable atmosphere if you have squad-mate helmets turned to "off."

Mass effect fields?! Psh, yeah those are totally not real! You know what else bothers me...? Those glowing orange things that just appear out of nowhere on their arms that they can use for communications or to download computer files. I mean, what the hell is THAT!? Oh, and characters that can make people FLY AROUND using their MIND or whatever!? What are they WIZARDS!? Technology like that doesn't exist!!!! Mass Effect is SO FAKE!

For virtually all the missions where you have a forced squadmate, it's not a helmet-needing mission. Mars with Liara is pretty much the only exception to that.

The real answer I think is that full helmets wouldn't integrate well, aesthetically or practically, with a lot of the squadmate attire.
This wasn't a problem in ME1 where pretty much the entire squad is composed of military-type characters (Alliance soldiers, a bounty hunter, a space cop etc), so it was viable for them to always have armor on, and a helmet could be easily implemented.
In ME2, there seems to be an effort to diversify squad appearances; each of their costumes is meant to complement their character. Now you get things like Miranda's catsuit, whatever Jack wears, Kasumi's sneak thief getup etc, all things that make zero sense in a hazardous environment and would look profoundly silly/weird with a viable 'space helmet', so... breather masks.
Yeah, it's a bit silly, but I can easily overlook it, if it allows for more freedom in character design approaches.

In previous topics (after ME2 and before ME3) people explained that it breaks immersion. In that sense it is a valid complaint.
