They've done it a few times. Just like Spike has done a Star Wars marathon several times. I think ABC Family has Harry Potter. TV Stations love claiming movies series. Oh yeah, FX has Spider-Man and X-Men. USA has Pirates. It is an easy way to get a ton of people watching the channel to see the advertisements for the prime-time shows and advertisements.

I'd think a LOTR marathon is a bit of an investment than a Star Wars Marathon. Star Wars is maybe 6 1-hour movies at most. LOTR is 3 3-hour movies.

You're on crack. All 6 Star Wars movies is longer then the 3 LoTR movies. All of the Star Wars movies together is 13.5 Hours, LOTR extended is 11.5 hours. You'd spend even more time if you wanted to add commercials or bathroom breaks, which I definitely suggest you do. Either way, it is an investment. The truly sad thing is it is impossible to watch both fully in a day.
