Forget Harbringer, forget The Illusive Man, forget Marauder Shields and forget Star Child.

Steve Cortez must be the most feared character in the whole Mass Effect series. Never before have I seen such a character that people actively go so out of their way to avoid him as much as physically possible.

What I find funny about the whole scenario is that the people who 'avoid' Cortez do so to avoid being roped into the "gay romance" and yet have no reservations about talking to other characters (even new love interests) despite the potential for them SOMEHOW not clicking the glaringly obvious "Yes Ashley, I would like to crash land the Normandy in your hanger bay".

Just an observation I picked up on a lot. Steve is a bro and aside from the forced "Did we mention he had a husband?!" thing that got shoved down our throats at every chance he was a pretty solid character. It's also nice to see a dropship pilot in a video game/film/fiction who doesn't die for once.

Maybe because Kaidan joins the crew far later and -can't- ninjamance you that much like:

- Liara
- Cortez
- Allers
...

Uhh, wait, that's the bunch. Those three characters can lock you in a romance BEFORE the VS or Tali returns.. Not sure about Garrus, think you can lock yourself into that romance earlier.

Allers can be avoided. Her clumsy attempt to get into Shepard's pants is ... easy to realize. Cortez is really difficult since he's more friendly. And Liara - well, it's no secret she's always romantically attached to Shepard, regardless if Shepard loves her or not.

So yeah, guess Cortez is "feared" 'cause his romance feels more like "ninjamancing" if you don't pay attention.
Never had any issues with him. Stay friendly but pick the right option and the right time so he won't lock you in. No need to avoid him.

I never avoid Cortez... that dude just lost his spouse + I dont know him well, so if he shows interest I can just say I only like aliens =P

Kaidan... I actively avoid and wont talk to him until I have confirmed a romance... because he made it sound like a dying wish... =.="

By "paying attention" I assume you mean...actually reading the dialog choice. The first dialog that leads to romance (there are three of them before it locks...) is "I'll be looking at the women."

So yeah. Unless you are blindly picking your dialog options, it is IMPOSSIBLE to be ninjamanced by Cortez. :pinched:

Unless you tell Cortez you like MEN and then tell him you want more than friendship with him, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get ninjamanced by Cortez. So be careful. If you say "I got ninjamaned by Cortez", we will know you told him you like cawk ^^

Gotta say, never felt like Steve was a ninjamance...the whole, "I'll be looking at a the women" option kinda made it easy to avoid. I think people are just afraid of the bottom right corner dialogue option...

Not quite. The romance options for all the characters are so balatantly obvious I wouldn't call any of them ninjamancing.

The romance options with Cortez are easy to avoid. There are two of them:

"Do it for me." This one is highlighted in blue and it's about telling him to go to the Citadel and stop working so hard. Your other choices are both pretty easily seen as anything but romantic.

"I'm eye candy too." This one comes up if you are drinking with him at the Purgatory Bar on the Citadel. I don't know if the conversation goes further than this as it seemed pretty clear to me this was a romance option. Especially when the other choice here is: "I'll be watching the ladies." It doesn't get more obivous than this. Cortez's response to it is actually well thought out and certainly not awkward. All he says is; "Good, I don't need you as competition." This one happens relatively late in the game.

Liara's is the easist to see if you can believe that. She asks you up front if you want to pick up where you left off, even if you cheated on her once with someone else in ME2. She asks right away when you get back to the Normandy from the Citadel. You've got two choices. "Absolutely" and "Let's just be friends." If you haven't romanced her before it's even easier to see than that. She'll talk about spending more time together as friends. Your options are: "Or more than friends." and "I'd like that a lot." This happens fairly late in the game. You have to make a second visit to the Citadel or at least complete missions after the Cerberus attack and get the E-Mail from her before you can talk to her. She'll appear over in that court yard after the Cerberus attack, but you can't talk to her immediately.

Allers of course talks about following you home. Your options are; "Let's keep it professional" and "I'm OK with that." Garrus and Tali have to be carried over from ME2, and like Liara, they'll ask in their first conversation if you still feel the same way. Pretty simple really. This one is pretty early on, but blatantly avoidable.

This game doesn't really have the ninjamancing of previous games. The only thing and I mean the only thing you've got to watch out for is that trying to romance two people won't work at all. The most recent seems to cancel out the first. There is no confrontation like you had in ME1 between Liara and Ashley or Liara and Kaiden.

Cortez didn't bother me at all. I knew where he stood and it was easy to be supportive of him and let him know where I stood.

The one that creeped me out was Kaiden. He was hetero in past games regardless of the taken out of context assumptions people have made about him being Bi in the past. It wouldn't have bothered me at all if Kaiden was introduced as a Bi character originally. I was bothered by all of a sudden "yo, bro...you and me in the sack or what?" they sprung on us with him.

None of the romances in ME3 are ninjamances, there is a clear point where the option is open.

That said, my first game I was cautious around cortez. Despite being a paragon, I avoided paragon options and just was passive.

I don't understand it. My straight Shep in love with Liara danced with him at the bar because he's cool like that and then politely told Steve they're just friends... And guess what? Steve didn't scream or cry or try to rape me right there on the floor... He just said great I'm glad you're my friend and that was that.

People need to get over irrational fears.

I've not seen that myself, but that's what everyone who has seen it says. If that's teh case then that would bother me too. However, Kaiden has never made it off Virmire in any of my playthroughs. (Which I sometimes regret because Ashley is a ****.)

Actually it is easy enough to get ninajed since the option is on the paragon branch and because Bioware never put markers anywhere.

The only ninjamance danger I've seen in the game is from Traynor, whom after her checking out the captain's private shower gives a dialog wheel option where neither option sounds platonic in the least. I was concerned that my MaleShep playthru would get ninjamanced by Cortez, but I saw it easily and avoided it.

Cortez was a decent character who it was possible to be a supporting friend to without any risk of getting ninjamanced - the romance dialogue options are pretty obvious and you can take them without him feeling rejected (well, the "looking at the women" one does, don't know about later ones). Anyone who's avoiding him is missing out on another well-written character who my entirely straight alien-fancying Shepard was pleased to call a friend.

So you just blindly pick options? I'm sorry - but if thats the case, it isn't a ninjamance. It's called you being an idiot. You walk into my arm and fall over, I'm still not a ninja.

Laughing out loud as I read that!:D

But Steve was a good character, well done. Moving backstory, and good banter with Vega. I actually tried the "Why are you not checking me out" line in purgatory, but he said he knew I had a lady (Miranda) waiting for me.

It is ninja dropped on you, because it is in a place that it should not be.

But not all the dialog options are Paragon/Renegade throughout the entire game - not just for romances. ME3 established the Reputation system which only gives Reputation points rather then just blatently Paragon/Renegade.

And your still picking the options without reading them. And I know you aren't reading them since the paraphrasing couldn't be more clear...and then it gives two more options to back out of it which is more then I could say for the other romances *cough*Liara*cough*. And again, it's your own fault because you were careless. You being careless and not reading the dialog choices does not make this a ninja. Ninjas are precise and aren't about accidentals.

I mean, come on. They removed all but two choices and neither one has any ambiguity in it.

Put your homocard back in your pants and stop jumping on me. Anyways what Bioware should have done was to put a separate branch in the tree for romances, because when you're going through the long fetch quest turn ins, flashing through paragon/renegade options...you can easily get snagged into an oops relationship. Wasn't as bad before when everyone was on the ship.

Your going to have to point out where I pulled out my homocard. You're also making a very large assumption. And for that matter, what relevance does that have on anything?

And what Bioware should/shouldn't have done is irrelevant. The choice was there. Two options: flirt or give neutral (though friendly) response. Now I'm not sure what your doing during dialog time (you'd think after doing all those fetch quests you'd be embracing a dialog choice finally and thus paying attention) but the fact of the matter is that you aren't reading the dialog choices.

Steve Cortez is awesome. I never avoided him and I became his friend. If you don't want to be in a relationship with him you don't have to be. Tell him you like chicks and you're good to go.

l can maybe see how someone might be confused into offering Traynor a shower, but the next options are "join her" or "don't go in" which seems pretty straightforward to me.

Hella awkward? Potentially, yes. Ninjamance? Only if you're reaallly not paying attention.

Now, Vega on the other hand....

Sorry but you've got TWO chances to back out of a relationship with Liara in ME3 if that relationship was carried over from ME1 and ME2. (In fact ME2's LOtSB DLC gives you an additional chance to break up with her and no way to romance her if you haven't before.) If you have never romanced Liara before then you have only ONE conversation choice to get you into a relationship with her. The dialog choice is: "Or more than friends." Sorry, but she doesn't ninjamance you.

I don't know how anyone could claim she does this. You'd have to blindly click crap without reading it to end up romancing her. Which is your point. I don't know how you missed this.
