Bioware loves to boast of Mass Effect 3's 75 perfect scores and many of todays games are recieving better review scores that always seem to be high and almost always fall short in the actual consumers eyes. Do all these gaming scores affect how future game standards will be set? should we be afraid of the way the game industry might be going? Good examples would be CoD franchiese getting 9.5+ over the past years or other coutless games that get too much praise. Are Gaming Medias setting the standard of todays gaming at a sub par level?
For me I Dont think there are many games that are really pushing the boundary any more and are just out to make a substandard game to rake in cash. I cant go to a gaming website without seeing advertisements trying to sell games as calling them "Amazing", "a 9.5 score for gamers" and blah blah blah. In media it seems every AAA product is always some "revolutionary" game that sets new standards among gaming. However how rare are there games that actually do so? There have been maybe a handful of games in my book that have praiseworthy innovations over the past decade or so such as Half life 2, Portal, Counter-strike (the game that pretty much was the original CoD) Mass Effect 1, Assassins Creed II, Mine Craft, Bioshock and maybe skyrim
Im almost afraid of how the industry of gaming will head as it seems that a good portion of games (maybe 1/3 of the titles) are being dumbed down every year, adding less of a product, more expensive add-ons, less of a story, less ideas and more of a just shoot **** and dont think mentality. I dont know if its because they are trying to market to a broader crowd aka non-gamers or they just want to save budget and just work on the bare minimum. Either way there are not many games that are pushing boundaries other than making the most "realistic combat simulator".
I fear that we will be heading down a long and narrow road of products of mediocre gaming to please the non-gaming crowd and leaving many of its true customers in the dust.
What are your thoughts?
